Patrick Lloyd is the overarching antagonist of the ABC/Netflix series Designated Survivor.
Biography[]
At a young age Lloyd's father was convincted of tax evasion and sent to prison. As an adult he had married and fathered a child but a bitter custody dispute resulted in his being cut off from his son. As a result he began to hate the United States government and its people.
After serving in special forces, he founded a private military contracting firm called Browning Reed. He seemingly dissolved the company in 2015 after a coverup involving his employees in Afghanistan was exposed. Entering into the field of far right wing politics, he formed a militia movement named the True Believers. Working with a number of insiders, including Rep. Peter MacLeish, Lloyd's group managed to plant a number of anti-tank bombs in the capitol building, which were then detonated to catastrophic effect during a State of the Union address, wiping out nearly all of Congress and totally wiping out the Supreme Court. With the President and everyone in the line of succession gone, the Presidency fell to the Housing and Urban Development Secretary Tom Kirkman.
While evidence initially showed that an extremist Muslim group was behind the attack, Lloyd and his group were eventually uncovered as the true perpertrators of the act. With many of his followers arrests and MacLeish killed by his wife Beth MacLeish before he could be arrested (who then turned the gun on herself), Lloyd went on the run. He was eventually tracked to a bunker in Maryland. Lloyd threatend to unleash chemical weapons on Washington unless he was given a full pardon. He remained defiant even after President Kirkman called him and pleaded with him to surrender. Feeling that the threat of Lloyd potentially having chemical weapons was too great to ignore, Kirkman authorized the FBI to carry out a drone strike against Lloyd's bunker, finally killing the domestic terrorist leader.
