Patrick Onley is a fictional character in the BBC Medical drama Casualty, appearing as the main antagonist of the 2024 miniseries Breaking Point.

He is portrayed by Jamie Glover.

Biography[]

Patrick Onley is drafted in as the new consultant and clinical lead at the Holby City Emergency and Accident Department in March 2024, when both Dylan Keogh and Stevie Nash step down from the role. He becomes antagonistic towards the workforce, and constantly questions their abilities. He begins to make Dylan doubt himself as a doctor, especially when medicine is administered to a patient who is allergic. Despite Dylan protesting that he didn't act so careless, Patrick continues to make Dylan have doubts and tries to imply Dylan may suffer from autism and that he should be tested. The stress gets to Dylan, who then takes a short break from work in order to recover.

When footage is leaked to the media about the poor condition of the hospital which leads to a scandal, Patrick is on the hunt for the whistle-blower and becomes suspicious of many of the staff members. When Dylan returns to work, he and Stevie turn up to try and expose Patrick due to being suspicious of his abilities as a doctor. Patrick nearly slips up during a medical procedure on a patient, and is corrected by Stevie. Vengeful, Patrick messes up the procedure behind their backs in order to make the patient look ill and Stevie look incompetent at her job. Patrick later discovers that Dylan and Stevie have been looking into his past, and warns them that he has powerful friends on the board and advises them to back away due to them not having anyone else but each other.

Patrick continues to target other members of the staff in order to cover his own actions. He makes doctor Rash Masum lose confidence in himself, and accuses him of being the whistle-blower that leaked information to the press about the poor standards of the A&E. This causes Rash to become stressed and fall into depression, due to him already having lost his father earlier that year. Dylan attempts to appease to Patrick that he needs to stand down, but Patrick counters Dylan by having him banned from the emergency room by claiming to the board that he is unfit. But when Patrick is in charge of carrying out a procedure on a patient, Patrick nearly kills the patient by causing them to bleed heavily. This is witnessed by other members of staff. An investigation is launched as a result.

On his last day, Patrick returns to carry out non-clinical duties. Rash falsely confesses to being the whistle-blower in order to protect the true culprit, which is nurse Rida Amaan. An already stressed Rash hands his resignation in, and a delighted Patrick has him escorted from the premises. Patrick reveals to Dylan that he has been offered a new job up in Edinburgh, and smugly wishes him the best of luck in the department. But later that day Patrick witnesses Rash being brought in by paramedics having attempted to commit suicide, and begins to feel guilty and responsible for things escalating. Rash is saved by the team, and Dylan finds Patrick alone in his old office. Patrick tells Dylan he didn't intend things to end up this way. Dylan assures Patrick it isn't his fault, and that Rash did what he did due to a lot of different problems going on. Dylan advises Patrick that he should leave promptly, due to already being an unpopular figure; Patrick agrees due to his new post needing him as soon as possible.

Despite Patrick seemingly getting away with his actions and being moved off elsewhere by the Trust, Dylan phones ahead to his new place of employment in order to warn them about Patrick and to brace themselves.
