Patrick Vaughn, is one of the supporting antagonists of the Chicago P.D. episode "8:30 PM".
Background[]
He joined an extremist website, where he befriended two men from the same extremist groups, Ted Powell and Paul Watts, they all conspired to strike at a major event. Powell supplied them with two cars with bombs inside, explaining where to place them, programming Watts's bomb to go off in the middle of a police gala and Vaughn's was to go off when the firefighters and medics arrive to help the victims. Powell would have a third bomb made, he planned to place it on police headquarters.
A Dark Day[]
Although he does not physically appear in the episode, the plan is carried out by him and Watts, but not in the way he expected, as Watts made a mistake with the first bomb, which was supposed to go off at 8:00 PM, instead went off in the morning. As a result, the second was discovered and deactivated by firefighters. As a result, Vaughn who was in the building is one of the many people injured in the resulting destruction.
8:30 PM[]
He is first seen at the hospital, being treated for his injuries the damage his partners had caused in the hospital, before he was interviewed by Det. Alvin Olinsky who he gives fake suspects to throw off his role.
CPD soon discovered his visits to the site and Olinsky recognizes him from the interview, realizing he lied about the other suspects to throw them off. Intelligence moves to detain Vaughn while he was trying to leave, they try to deceive him into thinking they have follow up questions but he caught on and took Det. Erin Lindsay hostage and held a knife to her throat. He entered a stand off with Intelligence and the CFD, demanding to leave and voicing he had nothing to lose. While distracted, Joe Cruz shouted at him and hidden firefighter Peter Mills struck him from behind and freed Lindsay. As a result, Lindsay elbows Vaughn, breaking his nose and knocking him to the ground and Intelligence detain him.
Having a suspect, Olinsky and Sgt. Hank Voight and Olinsky take him away before FBI agent Graff confronts them on the lead. Hank asks Graff for permission to interrogate his suspect. After some reluctance, the permission is granted with Graff telling Voight he's got twenty minutes. They find a nearby room, with Olinsky standing guard outside, even casually eating a slice of an orange. Soon Vaughn finds himself detained in a room with a furious Voight who informs Vaughn of the extent of the attack, even calling Vaughn a coward who plants bombs. He states if he cooperates than won't endure the torture Voight will put him through although Vaughn insists on receiving medical treatment for his broken shoulder, before he discloses anything. As a result of his choice, the now bloodied is subjected to Voight's no-holds-barred style of interrogation with his screams echoing before he agrees to give up the name of the bombing mastermind: Ted Powell, a major player in the anti-government fringe movement.
He is ultimately incarcerated, for all his bombings and murders.
