Patrick and Karin are the main antagonists of the 2022 psychological horror film Speak No Evil.
They initially appear to be an ordinary Dutch couple who befriend the Danish family only for them to be revealed as psychopathic serial killers who have committed multiple acts of murder and kidnapping in general.
They were portrayed by Fedja van Huêt as Patrick and Karina Smulders as Karin.
Biography[]
Prior to film[]
Not much is known about the two nor their motivations for their actions aside from sadism. Judging by the huge volumes of empty luggage bags and cameras, they had lured and psychologically tortured countless families until they eventually murder the parents and mutilate the children by cutting their tongues out and passing them off as their own. Once they find a new potential family to prey on, they presumably would kill the child after it served its purpose. Though it’s unclear if this is always part of the ritual, as they killed Abel seemingly after Patrick became annoyed with his wailing.
Speak No Evil[]
While Bjorn and Louise travel to Tuscany, Italy, with their daughter Agnes, they are introduced to the Dutch couple Patrick and Karin, and their "son" Abel. After they hit it off with them, Patrick and Karin suggest they accompany them to their rural home in the Netherlands. However, once they do, the family gradually realize the extent of the Dutch couple's madness.
They verbally abuse Abel (whose tongue they sliced out) and start overstepping their boundaries with Bjorn and Louise such as forcing Bjorn to pay despite them recommending the restaurant, or playing loud music in the car and arguing with each other. The final straw comes when a naked Patrick sleeps with Agnes when the latter was wanting to sleep with her parents despite her age.
Bjorn and Louise leave only to return when they realize that Agnes's toy rabbit was missing. After they provide an explanation for why they left, Patrick and Karin "apologize" and everything seemingly returns to a form of normalcy with Bjorn befriending Patrick when they do a screaming session together. However, this sours when Bjorn uncovers the dark secret of the Dutch couple. He also stumbles upon Abel's lifeless body floating in the pool though whether Patrick or Karin killed him is uncertain.
Despite learning the truth, Bjorn does not tell his wife about the discovery and she ends up arriving with Karin. During the scuffle, Agnes's tongue is cut off with a pair of rusty scissors. Bjorn and Louise are then taken to a ditch where they are forced to strip after Patrick bluntly tells Bjorn that it was because of his passiveness that he and Karin were doing these horrendous actions. They then force Bjorn and Louise to strip naked and then stone both of them to death. Following this, they take Agnes as their new daughter, now mute, as they drive off to continue finding another victim they can murder, implying that the cycle will be repeated again. How this plays out remains unknown, unless the next victims find some ways to fight back against the terror they've inflicted.
Trivia[]
- Patrick and Karin have an English counterpart named Paddy and Ciara in the 2024 Speak No Evil remake. Unlike the original, however, Paddy and Ciara eventually both die in the end.
