| ~ Paul's only quote (also the only audible dialogue in the whole episode). |
Paul is the main antagonist of the Inside No. 9 episode "A Quiet Night In". He was a mysterious man posing as a mute, deaf cleaning product salesman who in actuality was a criminal mastermind.
He was portrayed by Kayvan Novak who also played Jake Abbasi in Skins: Fire and Victor Quartermaine in the videogame adaptation of Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit.
Biography[]
Paul didn't appear until near the end of the story when he turned up at Gerald's house with cleaning products in hand, he introduced himself via his card which explained he was "deaf and dumb" and wanted to sell cleaning products. Gerald (who at this point had just murdered his wife Sabrina happily took him up on the offer and told him to wait at the door for a moment. He then took a bowl of tomato soup and threw it over his white couch in order to conceal Sabrina's blood and disguise it as a food spill before inviting him in. Paul came into the living room and began helping Gerald clean the mess up, in the process he runs into Ray a burglar trying to steal the off-white painting adorning Gerald's kitchen.
Paul greets himself in the same manner as he did to Gerald and Ray buys a washing line from him before running back upstairs. Paul then notices the pillow with a bullet hole in it and stares at it perplexed before noticing a suitcase being lowered in the garden. When Gerald returns Paul explains to him what he sees through miming with the pillow and a confused Gerald eventually goes into the garden only to find Ray and Eddie trying to lower a suitcase containing his painting. Although confused he doesn't have time to do anything about it as in a panic the two dropped the suitcase onto his head accidentally killing him.
They both ran down into the living room to see if the painting was alright only to see it ruined after landing in the swimming pool. Both Ray and Eddie look on completely mortified before being shot by Paul who then calls his colleague about how smooth the job of stealing the painting turned out, not realising he only stole a decoy and that the real one had been destroyed.
Personality[]
Not much is known about Paul's personality aside from him appearing to be quite polite, mild mannered and responsible, something which doesn't change after he drops his deaf/dumb act although he does act more serious.
He also doesn't appear to be phased by violence, being capable of murder if it should suit his needs and is quite calm about seeing the bullet which Gerald shot Sabrina with.
Appearance[]
Paul is a handsome man in his mid thirties with dark skin and thick black hair who wore ripped blue jeans, a striped polo-shirt, brown hoody, blue bomber jacket and a black fanny pack. He also had brown eyes and stubble on his chin.
Trivia[]
- Ironically enough in spite of posing as someone who's dumb (incapable or refusing to speak) he is the only character in the entire episode who actually utters a word beyond miming (Ray & Eddie as they're trying to remain as quiet as possible and only speak through miming or texting), Gerald and Sabrina (who aren't on speaking terms although can be heard arguing with their voices muffled in one scene and both grunt during their fight over the TV controller) and Eddie who's closest piece of actual dialogue was screaming in pain after getting pepper sprayed and once again after accidentally putting chillies in his eyes.
