~ Paul to Carolyn, after his true allegiances are being revealed. |
Paul Bradwell is one of the two main antagonists (along with Konstantin Vasiliev) of Series 3 of the TV series Killing Eve. He is a high-ranking MI6 agent who was brought in to oversee Carolyn Martens after she lost her superiors' trust. He is later revealed to be an agent of the Twelve, using his position to prevent all attempts to expose him and investigate the organization.
He is portrayed by Steve Pemberton, who also played Tubbs Tattsyrup, Pop and Pauline Campbell-Jones in The League of Gentlemen, David Sowerbutts and Oscar Lomax in Psychoville, Eddie and Migg in Inside No. 9, and one third of the Vogons in The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
According to Carolyn Martens, Paul was a rising star in MI6 until he defected to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He and Carolyn also never saw eye-to-eye, with Carolyn developing a certain disdain for him and calling him a "whitehall warrior". At one point in Paul's life, he was married to another man until they both later divorced, leaving Paul distraught and tempting to call Carolyn during a recent Christmas for comfort. It is unknown when, but Paul eventually became a high-ranking agent of the Twelve, and would occasionally stop any investigations into the organization. To make sure that no one suspected him of treachery or espionage, Paul stuck to a routine that would throw suspicions off.
Return to MI6[]
In 2020, Paul left Foreign Office and was requested by high-ranking MI6 agent Diane to oversee Carolyn's Russia desk after she lost faith in her, which he took great pleasure in accepting. Before he did come back, he was requested by the Twelve to retrieve six million Euros that was stolen from their Geneva account. To that end, he hired Konstantin Vasiliev, who was already losing the organization's trust for his previous betrayal, to find the money and uncover who stole it. He also had him keep an eye on Carolyn, who was still looking into the Twelve regardless of what happened in Rome.
Returning to MI6, Paul approached and greeted Carolyn at the cafeteria, where he also met promising agent Mo Jafari. Paul took great pleasure in taunting Carolyn for the office debacle, believing that he is now running it and she corrects him that he's only overseeing the desk. He then left, wishing her the best of luck with Diane, saying that he hears she's in a feisty mood. Paul later sends a message to Konstantin, who was staying London, and the message read "Time to go fishing" in Russian on the menu. He also learned that Carolyn's son Kenny was investigating the Twelve and ordered Konstantin to kill him. Unbeknownst to Paul, Konstantin only went there to warn him of the dangers and Kenny accidentally fell off the roof.
In the aftermath, Paul steps in as head of the Russia Desk, knowing fully that Carolyn will investigate Kenny's death. As Carolyn arrives at a meeting, Paul says they weren't expecting her so soon. She and Paul simultaneously start talking to different members of the team and as they both continue, Paul loudly calls for a break. Once alone, Paul tells her it's too soon to come back to work after losing her son. She thinks it's her decision whether she's taking up leave or not, and deems herself fully capable of doing her job. He replies to by saying that he knows she thinks he's a self-serving prick but he he adds that her son's death is bigger than the job. He thinks she has to start taking care of herself and needs to grieve before coming back.
Finding the Stolen Money[]
A week later, Paul learns from Konstantin, who had met up with the Geneva account owner Charles Kruger, that Krueger may be the one embezzling the six million Euros since he claimed that he really wants the money. Taking this for word, Paul notifies fellow high-ranking Twelve agent Hélène of his report, who sends Villanelle to assassinate Charles. Although, Carolyn was also looking into Charles, Paul allowed her to approach him, full confident that Villanelle would complete her task, which she did. A few days after Charles's death, Paul met up with Carolyn and expressed his embarrassment regarding what happened during the stake-out. Carolyn says that if she had the proper authority, the death of innocent man would've been avoided. Confused by this, Paul questioned her claim regarding Charles's innocence, where she revealed that Charles was up to his eye balls in debt and his actions don't align with a man who was six million Euros, meaning that someone framed him. Asking Carolyn what she needed to learn more, she requested her office despite not knowing where it is exactly.
Paul complied with this and moved out of her office to allow her the chance to learn about who framed Charles. In the meanwhile, Paul stopped Carolyn from getting emails of records that contained Kenny's contacts before his death. As he was about to move out of the office and go to another appointment, Carolyn confronted him, after learning that her email was blocked and started to suspect he was working for the Twelve. Paul played innocent, claiming that Scotland Yard are dragging their feet and that no one at MI6 is to be trusted regardless. He then left to his appointment, introducing her to her office. Later, Paul met with Konstantin in his apartment, explaining that Charles was framed by the actual thief who is probably the same one who had his widow killed. He tells Konstantin to investigate, threatening him that if there is a breach, they are both to blame but Paul will make sure that he takes the fall.
Exposed and Death[]
Realizing that Carolyn was onto him and that she sent Mo to trail him, Paul stuck to his regular schedule, completely fooling him that he wasn't a traitor. But this didn't fool Carolyn and she sent him to investigate further. Knowing that Mo had found evidence on him, he notifies Hélène, who sends Rhian Bevan, her newest assassin and an intended replacement for Villanelle, to kill Mo and dump his body into a pond, angering Carolyn as a result. However, after Carolyn found out that Konstantin was with Kenny when he died and that Paul was involved somehow, Carolyn confronted Paul in his home, who had been told that Konstantin stole from the Geneva account. At gunpoint, Paul calls Konstantin and tells him to meet with him at his home, knowing what he did.
Carolyn and Paul met with Eve and Konstantin followed by Villanelle. After Konstantin sits down next to him, Paul claims he knows Konstantin from undercover, but Konstantin claims that Paul is a Twelve agent, confirming Carolyn's suspicions. After Carolyn shoots a bust to prove she can shoot, Paul threatens her but only for her to force him back on his seat. After Carolyn asks Konstantin if he killed Kenny, Konstantin explains that he went there to recruit him to save him, only for him to accidentally fall to his death and that Paul sent him. Paul calls him a liar. As Carolyn forces Konstantin onto his knees and points a gun to his head, she then points it at Paul's and shoots him in the head, killing him for his treachery and then stages it as a suicide.
Legacy[]
Paul's death cost Carolyn the trust of MI6, who had her reassigned to Cultural Attaché in Mallorca and replaced with the incompetent Hugo Turner, who knew that Carolyn was the one who killed Paul. She later claims that she is trying to uncover who ordered the hit on Kenny, but later admitted to know all along it was Paul and simply used it as an excuse. Konstantin took Paul's death as an opportunity to escape the Twelve's wrath, framing him for stealing from the Geneva account but Hélène saw through this deception and used it to blackmail him into training Pam. Despite Paul's death, Eve didn't stop investigating the Twelve and vowed to destroy it after losing too many loved ones.
Trivia[]
- Despite being an original character written for the series, Paul is loosely based on Richard Edwards since they were both MI6 officers who were revealed as high-ranking agents of the Twelve.
- According to Konstantin, Paul is not only working with the Twelve but also one of its heads. However, given the lack of evidence and Konstantin's long history of lying, it is currently unknown if this claim is true. Although, it is also most likely that Paul is simply a high-ranking agent rather than a mole like Frank Haleton.
- Paul shares the role of main antagonist with Konstantin Vasiliev, since he was the one who ordered the hit on Kenny, gave Konstantin orders to find the one who stole the missing millions, acted as a primary nemesis to Carolyn Martens and worked with Hélène as a fellow high-ranking agent.
