Paul Dellenbach is the main antagonist in the 2006 animated sci-fi thriller film Renaissance. He is the corrupt and wealthy CEO of the megacorporation Avalon as well as Barthélémy Karas's arch nemesis and rival.
He was voiced by Jonathan Pryce, who played Mr. Dark in Something Wicked This Way Comes, High Sparrow in Game of Thrones, Seamus O'Rourke in Ronin, General Vavarin Delatombe in The Brothers Grimm, Horatio Jackson in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Jacob Marley in the 2022 adaptation of A Christmas Carol, and Elliot Carver in Tomorrow Never Dies in the English dub and Gabriel Le Doze in the French dub. He is additionally portrayed by Max Hayter in motion capture.
Biography[]
Paul Dellenbach is the CEO of the megacorporation Avalon when his assistant and employer Ilona Tasuiev is kidnapped after finding out her dog is killed off while about to enter her car, police captain Barthélémy Karas is given the job of solving the mystery surrounding Ilona's disappearance and finds her, Dellenbach first appears on television screens around France discussing about Ilona's kidnapping describing as a "attack on our either corporation". Karas then visits Dr. Jonas Muller a former Avalon scientist who was familiar with Ilona who now works at a free clinic. Muller had been working to cure progeria, a genetic condition which affected his brother. Muller worked for Avalon as their top scientist but left after he failed to find a cure and his brother died. Muller tells Karas that "No one ever leaves Avalon", Karas then visits Paul Dellenbach, the CEO of Avalon and questions him about Ilona. On suggesting he may have been sleeping with her, Dellenbach replies "I sleep with my wife, I sleep with my secretary, I even sleep with my sister-in-law but I would never sleep with one of my researchers". later while investigating Ilona's whereabouts, Karas enters a large greenhouse, shoots and fights off couple of camouflage armed men, and discovers those men were part of Avalon's security, thinking Muller is behind Ilona's disappearance but shouts to the female boss who started his mission "One question remains: What in it for you?" He gets suspend from his job, later Muller tracks down Karas and handcuff him to the bars. He explains that he took Ilona because through her research she has discovered the secret to eternal life (as he himself did 40 years ago); but knowing what the consequences would be if Avalon acquired such knowledge, he kidnapped her. Karas tries to encourage the old scientist to hand himself in but Muller is mistakenly shot by one of Dellenbach's henchmen. Karas then deduces that the mysterious old man is Muller's younger brother: now immortal but trapped in an elderly body. Dellenbach, after his henchmen killed off Muller, has a argument fight with Karas over conspiracies over him and leading three died during his case which includes Dimitri Ostrovski, Dr. Jonas Muller and Hishiro Nakata (which the third he did not know), his henchmen beats up Barthélémy Karas, After a long search, he gets a fake passport for Ilona and Karas finally founds Ilona in a Parisian sewer while nearly strangling Muller's younger brother, he tells her not to kill her. After a long run, Karas is mortally wounded after rescuing Ilona. However she refuses to take the fake passport to start a new life. Instead she tells Karas she wants immortality by giving her discovery to Avalon. Reluctantly Karas shoots and kills her in the back as she walks back towards Avalon security. CEO Dellenbach watches all this happen in disbelief and frustration through a live feed from one of his men's helmet camera. Is unknown of what had happened to Paul Dellenbach at the end of the movie.
