Biography[]
Paul Gilstrap was married to a woman, Mrs. Gilstrap, and for unknown reasons, he wanted to kill her. He worked at a lab as a computer repairman where they made an extremely deadly poison, tetrachlorodrine. Paul came up with a plan to poison one of his wife's "Neptune Bars", knowing she always ate one before she went to bed, to kill her. He stole the poison from the lab and had done so. However, knowing that he would most likely get caught once she died, he decided to poison other Neptune bars and place them at a store so others would die, making it look like a serial killer was on the loose. As a result, his wife would just look like another victim. Seeing as to how Halloween is approaching, everyone was buying candy which made his plan even more doable.
However, after having poisoned his wife's bar and the ones at the store, Paul got caught by his employer putting the poison back and was brought into questioning. He denied ever stealing the poison and with no evidence, he was released. However, Paul knew that since he was seen putting the poison back, he would be arrested if anyone ate a Neptune bar and the poison was found in their system during an autopsy. Desperate to avoid going to jail, he brought several Neptune bars from the store from which he poisoned them. But he missed two of them. He saw one in a delivery package to a man named Ambrose Monk, and an armored car driver buying another. Paul follows the car driver to his truck and asks for a light for his cigarette. As the driver is lighting it, he collapses on the floor, dying. Knowing that an autopsy would be done on the driver, Paul takes the man's pistol and shoots him several times to death so no one would perform one on him. He catches the attention of the people at the store, and wipes his finger prints off the gun before leaving.
Ambrose's brother, Private detective Adrian Monk, is taken to the scene and finds Paul's cigarette as well as a pigeon eating the remains of the driver's Neptune bar. Adrian and his assistant Natalie Teeger later visit Ambrose at his house upon hearing that Adrian's father is coming back.
On that same night on Halloween, Paul finds Ambrose's whereabouts and wears a Frankenstein's Monster mask to disguise himself. He steals candy from a couple of kids he saw leaving Ambrose's house, but finding no Neptune bar, he goes back to Ambrose's house and pretends to be a child trick-or-treating. However, he is frustrated that he can't find the Neptune bar, and Ambrose pulls the candy away from him out of fear that he'll take more than one piece of candy. Paul throws a pumpkin decoration at his head, knocking him out. He barges into the house to look for the Neptune Bar, but Natalie and Adrian arrive and scare him off.
Becoming more desperate to find the poisoned candy bar, Paul starts stalking children who have been to Ambrose's house to scare them off and steal their bags of candy. At one point, he attacks some of them at a playground, one of which is Natalie's daughter, Julie, and runs off with their stolen candy. Adrian Monk arrives at the scene to question them, deducing that the only ones whose candy is stolen are from Ambrose's house. He also finds one of Paul's cigarettes in the sand on the playground and recognizes it.
As Adrian is trick-or-treating with Julie, he arrives at Mrs. Gilstrap's house and learns of her love for chocolate. He and Julie later find a dead pigeon and Monk recognizes it from the crime scene involving the dead car driver. Monk realizes that the chocolate crumbs the bird ate must have been poisoned and calls Captain Stottlemeyer to do a necropsy on it. He reluctantly agrees to do so.
Once the Captain discovers the bird has been poisoned, they perform an autopsy on the dead driver and discover he was poisoned with the same substance. They then find out that Paul stole the poison from the lab. Monk recognizes Gilstrap's name from his wife, and remembers how she mentioned always eating a Neptune bar before going to bed. He then puts everything together and finds out about Paul Gilstrap's plan. Monk finds the poisoned Neptune bar and gives it to the Captain as evidence. Captain Stottlemeyer and Lt. Randy Disher arrive at Paul's house with the evidence and arrest the man, much to his dismay.
