~ Paul to Darry |
Paul Holden is one of the Socs in S.E. Hinton's novel The Outsiders and its 1983 movie adaptation. A former friend of the Greaser Darry, he is among the Socs at the Greaser-Soc rumble, in which he challenges Darry prior to the fight.
History
Described as husky and blond, Paul was a friend and football teammate of Darry in high school. He had also been the best halfback on the football team.
Years later, in the present story, the two have become enemies as members of rival gangs. At the Greasers and Socs' rumble, Paul steps forward to challenge Darry. The two face off, but both are hesitant to start the fight. Dally then arrived to help the Greasers. As Darry turned to him, Paul threw the first punch and struck Darry. After a brutal rumble, Paul and his fellow Socs were defeated by the Greasers.
