F*cking Payback. Each more ridiculous than the next. Crimson Countess, Mindstorm, Swatto, the TNT Twins, Noir, Gunpowder, and the most idiotic of them all...
~ Grace Mallory describing Payback to the Boys.

Payback are the overarching antagonists of Season 3 of the TV series The Boys.

They are a superhero group formed in the 1980s by Vought-American and, just like The Seven, are secretly corrupted and destructive.

Biography[]

Foundation[]

Payback was formed in the 1980s by Frederick Vought to serve as a helping hand in the military. Because of their superhero appearances and promises, the public perceived them as kind and devoted heroes. For a while, this was true on some levels; in actuality, the group was incredibly toxic and abusive, especially under Soldier Boy’s command. Soldier Boy was constantly abusive to the team and would sabotage Black Noir's acting career and even beat him to a pulp after he tried to protest.

Operation Charly[]

Because of his abusive nature, Payback (with the exception of Gunpowder) decided to betray Soldier Boy while on a mission to battle the Russians. In response to this, a brutal battle between Soldier Boy and Payback began, leading to the disfigurement of Black Noir, but Payback nonetheless gained the upper hand. Mindstorm was distract Soldier Boy long enough for Crimson Countess to knock him out. After the fight, they handed him over to the Russians to be experimented on and tortured. Vought was aware of this and had actually given them permission to do so since they received Soldier Boy’s sperm and were using it to make much more powerful offspring. Despite this, Payback was forced to disband after the mission.

Season 3[]

After Billy Butcher and Hughie Campbell worked together to break into Russia to locate a weapon, they found Soldier Boy and took him to America, where they agreed to help him kill his former team if he helped them kill Homelander. Every member of Payback is eventually killed in one way or another before Soldier Boy betrays the team, leading to a battle between The Boys and Soldier Boy as well as Soldier Boy’s defeat, thus inadvertently avenging Payback and their unfair treatment.

Members[]

Trivia[]

  • They are parodies of The Avengers from Marvel Comics.
  • During Black Noir’s hallucinations, the cartoon animals that represent Payback also show their flaws:
    • Soldier Boy is presented as an Eagle, representing his status as an American hero, but also his predatory behavior of attacking people weaker than him.
    • Crimson Countess is presented as a fox, showing how sly she truly is, but also the archetype that foxes are seductive.
    • Mindstorm is a goat, referencing how goats are portrayed in occultism as having telepathic abilities.
    • The TNT Twins are horses, referencing how horses become sexually active when mature.
    • Gunpowder is a pig, showing his over-indulgence in violence.
    • Black Noir is a black sheep, showing how he is against Soldier Boy, but still loyal to Vought.
