Pencil is a major character of the YouTube animated web series Battle for Dream Island who has competed in every season of the show to date. She was presented as one of the more enthusiastic contestants, being best friends with Match, and often adding "OMG" to her sentences.
Despite her nice behavior early on into the show's life, she was rather rude to Bubble and especially Ice Cube in Battle for Dream Island. She was later presented as one of the main protagonists in Battle for Dream Island Again. She is also a main character in IDFB, a supporting antagonist in Battle for BFDI, and a minor character in Battle for Dream Island: The Power of Two.
She is voiced by the series' co-creator Michael Huang, who also voiced Four, Blocky, Flower, Snowball, Puffball, and Golf Ball.
Appearance[]
Pencil is a No. 2 graphite pencil, which is commonly used for writing. Her main body is orange, her top has a pink eraser with metal, and her tip is beige with dark gray graphite.
Personality[]
Pencil is depicted as acting somewhat like a teenage girl, similar to Match, but less to an extent. Pencil often likes to add slang abbreviations to her sentences and has an inseparable best friend, Match.
Pencil was overall nice in the show until the third episode of Battle for Dream Island where she ridicules Bubble for being dumb and her "inability" to count to 3, which was proven true when she died before she reached 3.
In Battle for Dream Island Again, she revolts from Team No-Name and forms a team with her alliance, FreeSmart. From there, her more antagonistic side was shown, such as bullying Ruby to tears and referring to Book and Ice Cube as "monsters" despite being her teammates.
In IDFB, Pencil seems to be more detached from her relationships, as seen when she insults Match, her best friend, behind her back while she was eliminated. However, given how Pencil is like around Match in future seasons, it's possible this was just a coping mechanism.
In Battle for BFDI, Pencil becomes a control freak and toxic leader, taking advantage of Bubble's nature as a pushover in order to keep her under her thumb. She is also sadistic and sociopathic and will go out of her way to torture contestants that she hates, as seen when she stops Bubble from going against "the alliance's objective" so she could watch Fanny being electrocuted for her own amusement. She is later shown to be a misandrist, as she expresses disgust when a group of male contestants enter the EXIT.
Biography[]
Pencil was created during summer of 2008 as a character in the "Firey" comic book series. She later competed in a precursor to the show in a comic book series known as "Total Firey Island", in which she won the "show". She competed in yet another prototypical version of Battle for Dream Island known as "Total Firey Points", but her placement is unknown.
Battle for Dream Island[]
Pencil, along with Match, was one of the first 2 contestants seen on-screen in the very first episode of the show, Take the Plunge. In Battle for Dream Island she was a contestant on the Squishy Cherries. When Ice Cube asks if she could be in her alliance, she angry refuses to let her join the alliance.
In "Barriers and Pitfalls", Pencil is then sent by Pin to find Blocky. After finding him, she and her alliance go to the obstacle course as fast as possible, only for her to get dulled.
In "Are You Smarter than a Snowball?", she doesn't take the test and instead draws an infinite doodle instead. When Match plays Spongy Cake with her mini-match, their tests gets on fire which results them having no score. Pencil later gets shocked by Match after the latter slapped Bubble. She then comes to the conclusion that Bubble is dumb because she can't count to 3, despite Bubble dying before getting to 3. Pencil also suggests to rip Bubble's test in half since she thinks she'd be too dumb to pass the test.
In "Sweet Tooth", she and Match talk about Bubble being "dumb", though later realizes she isn't after seeing Bubble count to 8. Pencil is one of the many contestants to use Leafy's cake, which causes her to get a low score of 13.
In "Puzzling Mysteries", when the TLC got closed, she told the Announcer that it can only hold 6 contestants. She and the rest of the Squishy Cherries have a hard time finishing the jigsaw puzzle as the pieces are upside down, she instead talks about how Eraser stepped on a nail in "Taking the Plunge".
In "Crybaby!" she was the only one in her alliance to choose Snowball on their team alongside Eraser and Pen, due to him winning more contestants, which Match and Bubble are not happy with. Pencil has a hard time in the crying contest. Her team finally wins in the skiing contestant tiebreaker.
In "Don't Lose Your Marbles", she gets angry at Snowball for popping Bubble. Pencil and her alliance talks about how great it is for them to be in the final 11.
In "Half a Loaf Is Better Than None", she is upset when Match gets eliminated and accepts Ice Cube to join her alliance. She cheers for Match during the rejoin contest and gets disgusted when Spongy wins. In the challenge, she tries to use her "alliance power" to jump over a variable height but fails when she gets hit by the hurdle.
In "Vomitaco", Pencil plays with Bubble and Ice Cube, but later calls Ice Cube "garbage" compared to Match. Alongside the rest of her alliance, she chooses the barf bag contest. She gets angry at Rocky after he vomits at the colored water and proceeds to throw a bowling ball at him. She then covers the leak with a pillow and throws barf at Blocky. Pencil wins the barf bag contest as she was the last one standing. When Bubble asks her why she didn't want to do the taco contest, she pops her due to not wanting to answer "stupid questions".
In "Bowling, Now with Explosions!", she is one of the various puppets used at the beginning of the episode. During the contest, she makes the last throw and hits 5 bowling pins. When subtracting points, she takes off points from everyone except for her alliance and herself. Blocky and Firey take away 56 and 30 points respectively from her for deducting their scores, while Leafy takes away 10 from her and everyone else for equality. Pencil is up for elimination for the first time since "Bridge Crossing".
In "Reveal Novum" she votes for Tennis Ball to be eliminated even though she said he was very fuzzy. Pencil comes in first during the staring contest. Despite winning, since the scoreboard can only hold 2 digits, she ends up in the danger zone.
In "Rescission" after Firey shows her an emergency button and tests it on Bubble. She gets mad and uses the emergency button on Firey, Leafy, and all the recommended characters in the episode. Spongy tumbles into her and Rocky is about to barf at her only for him to speak for the first time he spoke in 15 months. Pencil gets eliminated with 259 votes, which causes her to get mad at the Announcer thinking that it must've been broken, before being sent to the TLC.
In "Gardening Hero", Pencil was one of the contestants that could be voted to rejoin.
In "The Glistening", Pencil votes for Ice Cube alongside most of the eliminated contestants. She fails to rejoin the game by only having 60 votes and is teleported back to the TLC.
In "Insectophobe's Nightmate 2", Pencil says that she can't wait to be freed since BFDI was confirmed to be cancelled, only for them to be "eaten" by the bugs. However, it was revealed that everyone faked their deaths.
In "The Return of the Hang Glider", after she is released from the TLC, she tries to vote for Bubble to win but instead votes for Leafy in fear of being slapped. She, Match, and Bubble are among the first to be let in to Dream Island. She later gets angry at Firey for not letting Leafy in. She later is glad when a spike gets on Rocky's mouth so he can't barf anymore. After finding out that Leafy stole Dream Island, Pencil uses Flower's Announcer Crusher to use to give Leafy a death penalty. After the credits, she asks Match if it would be weird if the first and last spoked words of BFDI was the same.
Battle for Dream Island Again[]
In "Yeah, Who? I Wanna Know", Pencil gets 320 votes and successfully gets into the second season. Pencil is first seen chasing Leafy alongside the other contestants. When Golf Ball questions on Pen on how they should get her in the forest, Pencil tells them about the Leafy detector she uses to slow Leafy down. She later gets into an argument towards Donut over the size of teams.
In "Get Digging", Pencil kicks Ice Cube out of her alliance due to her weird face expressions. Pencil is assigned to add the ingredients to the Yoyle Stew along with Ruby and Match, which a lot of deadly substances were added. Pencil invites Ruby to her alliance and plans to revive Bubble, but Ruby declines this.
In "Insectophobe's Nightmare 3", she and her alliance do not participate in the contest since they excused themselves. Pencil finally decides to revive Bubble, considering herself self-thought and later explains why Ruby should be in the alliance. She later assigns Book and Ice Cube as alternatives to her alliance when they question her.
In "Zeeky Boogy Doog", she scolds Ruby for reviving Flower, threatening her to expel her from the alliance, though she later said that she was kidding. She practices the freedom of speech during the challenge, which gets her dragged by Tennis Ball.
In "Get in the Van", she prevents Match from being eliminated by tying her on the stage used for Cake at Stake. She also forms a new team called FreeSmart, due to her not wanting to use the word "freedom" since she thinks its dumb.
In "No More Snow!", Pencil tells Ruby to press the button on Evil Leafy, which her alliance has a hard time doing due to Ruby accidently pushing buttons and cries when Pencil shouts at her, which zaps her.
In "It's a Monster", Pencil is revived by Match and drives the FreeSmart Supervan. During her alliance's trip to the Goiky Canal, they drown and get revived numerous times.
In "The Long-lost Yoyle City", Pencil and her alliance finally gets to Yoyle City. Pencil gets caught by a fish monster, and is later sawed. Her team won the contest, but Firey Speaker Box interrogates Bubble who pretends to be a tree. Pencil is last seen in the season falling from the summit with everyone else.
IDFB[]
Pencil prepares to eat gumdrops but realizes that Ruby forgot to remove the lens cap from the camera. When Ruby pulls out the BFDIA 6 screen results. Pencil later ends up falling to Yoyle Needy. After Book saves her life and recovers Ice Cube, Ruby, and Bubble, they all talk about Match, but she complains about her being too needy.
Battle for BFDI/BFB[]
In Getting Teardrop to Talk, she uses Lightning to electrocute people she didn't like, such as Spongy and Flower. Bubble attempts to stop her, but Pencil threatens her status by demoting her from a "member to bember" of her alliance. FreeSmart officially dissolved when Book and Ice Cube left to join a different team because they thought that it was unhealthy for them, leaving only her more close members of her alliance, Match, Bubble, Ruby, and herself.
She was eliminated in the second episode, Lick Your Way to Freedom, due to her astonishingly mean behavior for the past 4 years (especially the first episode of BFB) and when she was up for elimination for the first time in 4 years, she was voted off the show and sucked into the EXIT.
In Enter the Exit, she complains about males in an "all-girl classroom" and the class in general. She failed to rejoin with only 3,712.
However, when Spongy was eliminated, she and Match refused to go through him when everyone else goes, presumably because they still hate him due to being gross.
The Power of Two[]
She currently only appears in You Don't Know Those Buttons Don't Do Anything, Right?, Pencil follows Liy and Stapy as they attempt to escape the EXIT. Pencil later watches Liy use the staple and uses it to unlock the door.
During “The Seven Wonders of Goiky” and “Outbreak at Stake”, She and other EXITors tried to escaped the EXIT, She finally got out in “Out of the Blue” and currently putting up for joining TPOT.
Pencil, along with Liy would later be voted into the game during "Category One". She currently competes on the CloudYAY team.
Non-Canon appearances[]
BFDI: Aw Seriously?[]
When Pencil is greeted by Match, she responds by pointing to David who says his catchphrase and hires him as her new assistant. Match thinks it is dumb, angering Pencil. She later argues with Match on how David can say lots of words. Pencil later orders a matchstick from Match's factory, and Match orders her assistants to make one, only for it to be backfired by Blocky after the latter ordered Firey to burn the factory down. Pencil later mocks Match that her assistants betrayed her, though eventually, they agreed to apologize to David and they have a picnic together.
Trivia[]
- Pencil's scream is the same as Firey's due to having the same voice actor.
- She has the ability to keep her eyes open for long periods of time, shown in BFDI, where Pencil competes with David in a staring contest lasting days.
- She received first place in Total Firey Island.
- Coincidentally, she has placed dead last of the 65 competitors in BFB, making her the only contestant to be in both first and last place.
- Despite being best friends, Pencil seemed to be in bad terms with Match in IDFB.
- However, it is possible that Pencil was just coping about not being with Match for so long.
- Pencil was the last contestant to receive a vote in the first season, as she had a high record of not receiving votes for a long time when the show was not as popular.
- Pencil has the third highest body count in the series with 120 kills, being surpassed by Spongy and Blocky.
- They are also one of the only characters with more than 100 kills.
