Send word to the Abbots, we've got a Dark One in the fort. He'll need to be cleansed.
~ Penrith

Penrith is a supporting character in the AMC series Into the Badlands.

He is the father of Lydia and head priest of a Totemist settlement, one of the few remaining religious groups in the Badlands. With the help of the Abbots, he tracks down Dark Ones so they can be abducted and taken to the Abbot Monastery. While he is generally passive to conflict, his devotion to his religious teachings leads him to indirectly harm those in his settlement.

He was portrayed by Lance Henriksen, who also portrayed John Milton in Scream 3, Sergeant Daniel Neff in Damien: Omen II, Chains Cooper in Stone Cold, Emil Fouchon in Hard Target, and Dr. Jarret in Man's Best Friend.

Personality[]

Penrith is shown to be fiercely devoted to the Totemist religion, only willing to accept those into their settlement that are completely subservient to the Totemist teachings, and willing to exile anyone who breaks their sacred teachings, even Lydia, his own daughter. This is best seen when nomads attack a Totemist wedding and are killed by Lydia in self-defense, but despite the fact that Lydia saved their lives, Penrith still exiles her from their settlement as any act of violence is a disgrace in his eyes. His faith was so obsessive that he even would help the Abbots in abducting Dark Ones to be taken to the Monastery despite the fact that him and his settlement stood to gain nothing from him doing so. That being said, he did love Lydia and was overjoyed when she initially returned to their settlement after years of absence, but his devotion to his religious teachings was shown to be stronger than his love for his family.

Biography[]

Tracking Dark Ones[]

Penrith grew up in a Totemist settlement located in the Armadillo Territory, devoting his life to their holy teachings and following the Gods. Penrith would go on to become the head priest of their settlement and its effective leader. He would eventually have a daughter named Lydia, who he planned to raise by his side as a priestess. At some point, he would come into contact with three Abbots known as Cyan, Dury, and Ramona from the Abbot Monastery, a place where a woman named the Master abducts and trains Dark Ones in secret. Despite not being a Dark One himself, Penrith would help to track them for the Abbots, believing that he was aiding in cleansing the land of evil. His life took a turn when one day a group of nomad scavengers attacked their settlement, but were stopped by Baron Quinn, the ruler of the territory. Lydia witnessed Quinn in battle and became infatuated with him, eventually pursuing Quinn romantically. Due to the Totemist's not being Cog slaves, Lydia was not considered property of Quinn and thus he happily accepted their marriage. Although she abandoned her father's settlement, Lydia kept several Totems and requested Quinn protect the Totemists from attacks by nomads. Over the following years, Penrith would believe his daughter was beyond saving, and continue to help track Dark Ones for the Abbots. At some point, Lydia and Quinn would have a son named Ryder, who would be captured by group of nomads and mutilated due to Quinn refusing to save the ransom. While Ryder was saved, Lydia took him to see her father, hoping it would help him to fix his mental state, as the experience gave Ryder extreme trauma. Ryder eventually grows to adulthood, and wishes to take his father's position as Baron. Ryder takes a pendant from a boy named M.K. which depicts the mythical city of Azra, but does not recognize said symbol and takes it to Penrith in order to question him on its purpose. Penrith explains that Azra is generally considered a fairy tale, and that Ryder should not concern himself with it. After Ryder leaves, Penrith realizes that M.K. must be a Dark One, as Azra was once a safe haven for Dark Ones to live in. Penrith meets with the three Abbots he is most familiar with and instructs them that there is another Dark One for them to collect within Quinn's fort.

Final days[]

Not long after this, Lydia is banished from Quinn's territory due to Quinn's second wife Jade framing Lydia for having poisoned her. Despite not stopping his father from banishing her, Ryder gives Lydia the totems she kept for all these years, advising her to go back to her father's settlement. She arrives at it's doorstep, begging Penrith for help. He callously says that she does not belong there and made her choice long ago, but she claims that she can still be saved, producing the totems and begging that he show her mercy by giving her a second chance. Penrith tells her to kneel, which she does, at which point he asks if she is willing to not only never leave them again, but also renounce all earthly possessions, which she agrees to do. After this she is inducted back into the settlement by submerging herself in a holy pool, emerging cleansed in the eyes of the Gods. Months go by, with Penrith and Lydia seeming to have rebuilt their relationship. They host a wedding between two Totemists, during which Lydia thanks everyone for giving her a second chance and saving her, with the past months being some of the happiest in her life. Penrith affirms to her that they were not the ones who saved her, but the Gods. Unfortunately, things take a turn when the groom is shot by an arrow, signally that a group of nomads have arrived to raid the settlement. With Ryder now in control of the Armadillo Territory, no one is stopping the nomads from freely attacking the Totemists at will. At first, all of them get on their knees and pray, as their religious teachings dictate that they must accept whatever happens to them, which Lydia initially goes along with. However, after one of the nomads grabs a woman with the implication that he will force himself on her, Lydia grabs dining utensils and begins attacking the nomads, eventually managing to subdue and kill all of them. Despite having saving their lives and stopping a rape, Penrith is enraged at Lydia for having spilled blood as it goes against their fundamental teachings, and exiles her from their settlement forever. Penrith passes away not long after this, with Lydia eventually returning to lead the Totemists during the war between the Widow and Baron Chau, and shifts their philosophy to no longer be focused on simply accepting the position that the Totemists are in.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Leadership: Penrith successfully led a Totemist settlement in the Badlands despite the danger posed by attacks from nomads, with his settlement existing for several decades.
  • Tracking: Penrith was skilled enough in tracking to be enlisted by the Abbots to help find Dark Ones so they could be taken to the Monastery.

Trivia[]

  • Ankara states that the Abbot Monastery once worked with scribes who were not Dark Ones, but ended this practice after Magnus posed as a scribe to get information for the Black Lotus. Following the end of the practice, Penrith is the only known person that the Abbot Monastery works with who does not possess the Gift.
