Pepé Costa is a supporting character in the 2010 crime game Mafia II.
He was voiced by the late John Cygan, who also voiced Solidus Snake in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.
Biography[]
Pepé Costa was born in Sicily in 1905. After moving to America he later became a member of the Vinci Crime Family in Empire Bay, and became the bodyguard of Don Frank Veliano. During his criminal career he has been in prison numerous times for robbery and violence.
He is sent to prison at some point in the early 1940s, and becomes the bodyguard of Leo Galante, the Consigliere of the Vinci family. He becomes part of Leo's prison gang and they are involved in carrying out fight clubs, with Pepé being the best fighter. The gang are joined by Vito Scaletta in July 1945, who turns to Leo for protection when facing a ten year prison sentence. Vito trains under Leo and takes part in a fight with Pepé, with Vito proving himself to be a good and capable fighter.
Pepé is scheduled for a fight with Brian O'Neill, but a bunch of Irish prisoners brutally beat up Pepé which forces him to opt out. Vito stands in for Pepé and confronts him at the prison gym, and ends up killing Brian. Vito is relocated to a more comfortable cell which Pepé and Leo reside in. Leo reveals to Vito he will be out of prison in a couple of years, but will look to having Vito's sentence reduced. Leo and Pepé were released in 1948, and true to his word Leo had Vito released in 1951, only six years following his imprisonment.
In April 1951, Pepé is present when Vito and Joe Barbaro are made into the mob. Five months later in September 1951, Leo has Vito kill his boss Carlo Falcone after Vito and Joe carelessly caused a mob war in the city over the past week. After the job is done, Leo, Pepé and other Vinci members wait for the pair and Leo urges Vito to ride with him and Pepé. Joe is taken away in another vehicle which takes a different direction, and Leo regretfully informs Vito that "Joe wasn't part of [their] deal".
Trivia[]
- Despite Joe Barbaro being seemingly taking away to be killed, the sequel Mafia III (taking place in 1968) reveals Joe to still alive and now working as Leo Galante's new bodyguard and driver. It is unknown what became of Pepé by this point as he isn't seen among Leo's crew.
