Pernida Parnkgjas is a major antagonist in the 2001-2016 supernatural action manga series Bleach and its 2022 anime television series adaptation, Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War.
It is a Quincy and a member of the Wandenreich's Sternritter with the designation "C" - "The Compulsory", as well as an elite member of Yhwach's Schutzstaffel. It is also the left hand of the Soul King Adnyeus, governing "Progress".
It is voiced by Bin Shimada (who also voiced Broly in Dragon Ball Z and Wapol in One Piece) in Japanese and by Xander Mobus (who also voiced Bazz-B and Quilge Opie in the same series, Momoshiki Otsutsuki in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Master Hand in Super Smash Bros., Yahaba in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, and PoH in Sword Art Online) in English.
Appearance[]
Initially, Pernida wears a long white coat with three buttons at the front and a dark red Hagal rune on the side. The hood covers its face, and the only visible part are his small, glowing eyes. Its true form is revealed to be a large white hand with a pair of eyes, the fingers of which are connected by chains.
Personality[]
At first, Pernida does not seem to show any distinct personality other than loyalty to Yhwach, as it remained silent for the most part. Despite this, the rest of the Schutzstaffel seem to understand it. During its fight with Mayuri, it slowly gains awareness of its own being. Despite being the left arm of the Soul King, it aligns with the Wandenreich and asserts its identy has always been that of a Quincy and becomes enraged when anyone tries to question it. As part of its evolution, it develops the ability to mimic others and their voices, as it demonstrates on Mayuri, mimicking his laughter and later Kenpachi's speech patterns.
Biography[]
Pernida Parnkgjas is the left arm of the Soul King Adnyeus, and has in turn existed for over a million years, being one of the earliest known Quincy. At some point in time, the left arm, right arm, heart, and remainder of Adnyeus' limbs were removed from him by the Shinigami before he was sealed. Over 1000 years ago, with Royal Guard member Ichibē Hyōsube absorbed the left and right arm into himself before meeting with Adnyeus's son Yhwach and his Sternritter attempting to offer a peace treaty between Shinigami and Quincy. Yhwach refused and attempted to attack Ichibē, who then used the left arm to seal away Yhwach's eyes while showing him the current sealed state of the Soul King, greatly weakening him. In return for offering the Soul King's arm, Ichibē decided that Yhwach's eyes would be kept sealed until the day he died, before leaving.
Yhwach had eventually removed the left arm from his eyes and granted it an honorary Schrift: "C" - "The Compulsory". though it did not grant the arm any new abilities, eventually the arm would adopt the name Pernida Parnkgjas and was appointed as one of the Schutzstaffel, going into hiding within the Soul Society for the next 1000 years.
Thousand Year Blood War arc[]
Pernida makes is first scene among the other Schutzstaffel as Yhwach appointed Uryū Ishida as his successor having no reaction. It is later summoned along with the other members of the Schutzstaffel to the Soul King's Palace to fight against his Royal Guard. Pernida dispatches Senjumaru Shutara's guard and uses the compulsory to crush what he thought to be her only to be swiftly impaled by Ōetsu Nimaiya. Pernida is ultimately revived through Yhwach's Aushwalen and temporarily activates its Vollständig while proceeding to fight Kirio Hikifune inside the cage of life, however when she and Nimaya slit their throats to allow Senjumaru to use her Bankai Pernida and its comrades into her tapestry. When Uryu kills Senjumaru, Pernida and the Schutzstafell are freed and make their way to the Soul King's room alongside Yhwach. The Schutzstafell are confronted by Ichigo and his allies by the time Yhwach pierces Adneyues's body, Pernida targets Yoruichi's arm after she attempted to attack Yhwach while the the platform they fight on is destroyed, leaving to Pernida to be caught by Gerard Valkyrie and taken to safety. After Ichigo's coalition is subdued Pernida and the Schutzstaffel greet Yhwach after he is finished absorbing Adneyeus's remains as he proceeds to turn the Soul King palace into Wahrwelt.
After their briefings, Pernida and the Schutzstaffel head out into Wahrwelts city to dispose of the invading Shinigami, with Pernida running into Kenpachi Zaraki and Mayuri Kurotsuchi. Pernida crushes Kenpachi's arm with the Compulsory and shortly after his legs to which Mayuri takes over to trigger Pernida's exposed nerves. Pernida enlarges itself and sends its nerves after Mayuri bantering with the Shinigami over his disrespect. When Mayuri blows off Pernida's pinkie, it sends its nerves to destroy Mayuri's arm though he swiftly reattaches it, prompting Pernida to have its pinkie turn into another arm. Mayruri utilizes his Bankai: Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō to eat Pernida, causing it to retaliate with Heilig Bogens. As Mayuri questions why the Soul King's left arm would use and identify as a Quincy, Pernida retorts that it has always been a Quincy, fed up with the Shinigami's insults toward Quincies, it fire multiple Heilig Bogens with its nerves attached. One of them managing to destroy Mayrui's left arm but is rescued by Nemu. Pernida continues firing on Mayuri with its dopplegangers, though one of Mayuri and Nemu's nerve agents reach the doppelgangers finger, forcing it to tear it off. After taunting Mayuri it lunges at him before being destroyed by Nemu, forcing its dopplegangers to subdue her, activating the Compulsory to rip her apart before eating her remains to absorb more knowledge, however Mayuri reveals he implanted a counter for Pernida within Nemu's brain that began generating an electric signal that released countless multiplying cells that forced Pernida to continually regenerate until it could physically no longer do so, ultimately self destructing in the process.
Powers and Abilities[]
As a Quincy Pernida is able to use Heiling Bogen and Heilig Pfeil
- Reishi Manipulation: Much like its fellow Quincies, Pernida is able to absorb and manipulate Reishi, converting it into his own form of weaponry.
- Great Spiritual Power: Pernida possesses spiritual power comparable to that of a captain-level Shinigami as it was capable of swiftly dispatching Kenpachi Zaraki.
- The Compulsory: Pernida's Schrift is in truth an innate ability it had prior to being given the Letter C, that lets it control its nerves and send them into the innaimate objects and the bodies of its enemy's to manipulate and crush their limbs to shreds. It can also use its Schrift remotely if one of its fingers are severed.
- Evolution Governance : Pernida is able to evolve itself by having its nerves absorb any information it attaches itself too, including the speech pattersns of his enemies and the mechanisms of a Bankai ability. Pernida can additionally replicate itself through severed limbs and sprout additional limbs ontop of it
- Quincy Vollständig : Pernida is able to manifest a Vollständig, being granted the ability of flight with hand shaped wings.
Trivia[]
- In its debut appearance, Pernida was originally depicted with an arm, but when its full appearance was revealed later, it instead had no limbs and was itself a giant arm. The anime version of the scene removes the limb altogether.
- According to Tite Kubo, the visual motifs of the Schutzstaffel are based on different eras of war: Pernida is based off the ancient era.
- In the TYBW anime overseen by Tite Kubo, Pernida makes its debut appearance when Yhwach apoints Uryū as his successor, far earlier than when Yhwach invaded the Soul King Palace.
