Villains Overview

Together, we are the Spider. I'm its head, and you're the legs. The legs do what the head says. But there will be times when the legs are more important than the head. If I die, someone else will take over. My orders are of the utmost priority. My life is not. Be sure to make the right decision. I'm only a part of the Spider. What's important is the survival of the whole, not the individual.
~ Chrollo Lucifer founding the Phantom Troupe.

The Phantom Troupe (in Japanese: 幻影旅団, Genei Ryodan) is a world-famous gang of thieves and a criminal organization and are one of the main antagonists of the anime/manga series Hunter X Hunter. Collectively, they serve as Kurapika's archenemies, being the ones responsible for killing his entire clan 5 years before the beginning of the series.

The group consists of a total of thirteen members, all of whom are extremely potent Nen users, each with a numbered tattoo of a spider on their body. Their leader and most powerful member is Chrollo Lucilfer.

Biography[]

Founding Days[]

Prior to the events of the series, Chrollo Lucilfer established the Phantom Troupe on Meteor City, a junkyard city inhabited by outcasts. People who live there do not exist on any official records, and the existence of the city is only known to a few people. Him, Feitan, Machi, Pakunoda, Uvogin, and Franklin are all founding members.

Actually, the founding Troupe members are a group of children doing dubbed voice-acting of films they found in the junkyard. They simply pick the name "Troupe" due to the group member's numbers and have no idea for a whole name. Soonafter, one of the casts named Sarasa went missing, causing Chrollo to postpone the next screening which was aired in a church in Meteor City. The Troupe found their fellow cast's dead body on a forest, mourning her death. Chrollo wanting to become a "villain" and redesign both city and himself, to keep away all the criminals who will use Meteor City and its residents for their crimes.

At some point in time, Silva Zoldyck killed the No. 8 of the Troupe and clashed with Chrollo.

Yorknew City Arc[]

The Phantom Troupe serve as the main antagonists of this arc, although they act partially as anti-villains as a significant part of their motivation is to protect their allies. Their initial goal is to attack the Yorknew City auction. However, after Kurapika kills Uvogin, they shift their focus to getting revenge on the one who killed Uvogin by wreaking havoc into Yorknew City and slaughtering the many members of the Mafia community. Chrollo fought Silva and Zeno Zoldyck in the Cemetery Building although they stopped after realizing that he hired Illumi, Kalluto, and Maha Zoldyck to assassinate the Ten Dons of the Mafia community (the Ten Dons also hired Silva and Zeno to assassinate Chrollo).

Gon criticizes them of hypocrisy as they care deeply about each other, but mercilessly murder innocent people. Eventually, they discovered that Kurapika killed Uvogin and went after him, but captured Gon and Killua instead. Pakunoda read their memories and discovered Kurapika's weakness, but Kurapika immediately captured Chrollo and threatened to kill him if Pakunoda spoke of Gon's or Killua's memories. A hostage exchange was set up to trade Gon and Killua for Chrollo. During the exchange, Kurapika put a blade on Chrollo's heart, preventing him from using his Nen and/or contacting the other Phantom Troupe members. He also put a blade on Pakunoda's heart, requiring her to return Gon and Killua by midnight unharm and without deception and preventing her from revealing anything about Kurapika. At the end of the arc, Pakunoda sacrificed herself by using her Nen ability to reveal Kurapika's powers to the other members.

Greed Island Arc[]

Phinks and Feitan met Gon and Killua on the auction, they attempted to flee although the two easily pursued them. Phinks explained to them that they have no intentions to harm them and are unable to kill Kurapika as his death will render him to bemore powerful. At the same time, he explains Pakunoda's death and she was thankful to them before they left. After attending the Southernpiece Auction, the two stole a copy of the game Greed Island and bring it back to their hideout. At the same time, A few of the members decided to enter the game and suspected that Chrollo was there to look for an exorcist to remove Kurapika's Nen. Instead, they found Hisoka, who ended up finding a Nen Exorcist whom he hired to heal Chrollo. At the same time, Kalluto became the new replacement to Hisoka.

Chimera Ant Arc[]

Feitan, Phinks, Shizuku, Bonolenov, Shalnark, and Kalluto went to Meteor City to defeat the Chimera Ants who have taken over and enslaved several Meteor City residents. Feitan then defeated Zazan, the one responsible for the Chimera Ants invasion to their hometown.

Succession Contest Arc[]

Chrollo, whose Nen curse had been exorcised, and Hisoka fought to the death in Heaven's Arena. It appeared that Chrollo had killed Hisoka. However, Hisoka survived and vowed to kill all of the members of the Phantom Troupe. He immediately killed Shalnark and Kortopi. The other members tried to find him and suspected he was hiding on the ship taking everyone to the Dark Continent. Hisoka wanted to be pursued and hired Illumi to join the Phantom Troupe and help try to kill him.

Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge[]

In the non-canon movie Phantom Rouge, Omokage manipulated the corpses of Uvogin, Pakunoda, and the Shadow Beasts to attack Nobunaga and Machi, only for Nobunaga to quickly dispose of them. The Troupe wanted to settle scores with Omokage due to reviving Uvogin and Pakunoda as puppets bent to his will.

Sense of Morality[]

The members of the Phantom Troupe will slaughter anyone without hesitation. However all of them (except for Hisoka) care deeply about each other. Gon asked both Nabunaga and Chrollo about this, and neither gave a clear explanation. Feitan and Phinks decided not to kill Gon and Killua when they discovered that they refused to kill Pakunoda when they had the chance to do so.

It is stated that they sometimes do "philanthropic work", though the nature of this is unclear. They seem to regularly help Meteor City, as is seen in the Chimera Ant Arc.

Trivia[]

  • The Phantom Troupe are quite similar to the Band of Seven; both are a group of mass-murdering criminals who do not care about anyone except for each other and have an entire arc revolved around them. Additionally, all members of both groups have a unique set of skills and abilities that set them apart from the others. In both cases, these include superhuman strength (Uvogin/Kyokotsu), proficient swordsmanship (Nobunaga Hazama/Bankotsu), built-in guns (Franklin/Ginkotsu) and healing abilities (Machi/Suikotsu). Coincidentally, both Uvogin and Kyokotsu are the first members of their respective groups to be defeated and killed.
  • Members of the Phantom Troupe usually rank quite high in character popularity polls. Many of them come within the top twenty or thirty characters, according to the second character popularity poll and third character popularity poll respectively.
  • Members of the Phantom Troupe despite being murderous criminials have a high sense of camaraderie and would react with violence if one of their own is killed or threatened. However, this makes them hypocrites as their members have killed people with the same bond with others without reason and remorse often not even remembering them.
