“
Eh?
„
~ Phil's catchphrase.
Phillip James Mitchell, more commonly known as Phil Mitchell, is a fictional character and one of the main protagonists of the British soap opera EastEnders.
He is portrayed by English actor Steve McFadden. During a flashback episode in 2022, he was portrayed by Daniel Delaney.
No, no - if I hurt somebody, it's because they deserve it. He does it out of habit and for fun.
„
~ Phil to Sharon about his best-friend-turned-archnemesis Dan Sullivan.
Phil Mitchell was initially calmer than Grant, though both brothers had a sense of physical danger, displaying stereotypical masculinity, thuggish behavior and a tendency to resolve problems through violence. Phil was originally depicted as the thinker and the more streetwise of the pair, often bailing his more spontaneous brother out of trouble and preferring to bide his time when dealing with his enemies. It wasn't until the brothers' growing conflict where Phil was later driven down a darker, more destructive route.
At times Phil can be as equally violent as Grant. Unlike his brother on most occasions, however, Phil normally showed restraint when dealing with his enemies or those who cross him – exacting revenge over time, using mind games or getting others to do his dirty work, amongst other things. Phil has also shown many accounts of sadistic traits. His bullying of estranged stepson Ian Beale is often done as a means of deriving pleasure. Equally, the ceaseless degradation of his relationship with Lisa Shaw showed a particularly malicious side to Phil. While he has shown compassion to the women in his life, Phil frequently finds he is unable to give them the emotional security needed to sustain the relationship. Several women have left him due to this and his inability to put their needs before the needs of his family.
Other Appearances[]
Utter Philth[]
Due to the popularity of the character since his debut in 1990, Phil Mitchell has had numerous memes made about him - most of which were made by Douggy Pledger and uploaded to his website "Utter Philith". From kaleidoscopic Phils blossoming out of a floating Phil head, to mocked-up Phil Mitchell toys, to a video montage of every time Phil viciously swigs from a bottle to the sound of "Another One Bites the Dust", the Utter Philith site is an exhaustive and wildly varied exercise with what you can achieve with images of one man's face.
Douggy has also a YouTube channel, where he posts meme videos about Phil Mitchell. Examples of these include a compilation of Phil saying "Say something!" and a remix of the EastEnders theme set to Phil saying "eh?".

Trivia[]
Phil Mitchell is one of the longest-running characters in the show.
Steve McFadden (the actor who played Phil Mitchell) has received universal acclaim for his portrayal as Phil Mitchell, now regarded as one of television's most iconic characters of all-time.
That being said, McFadden has won and been nominated for numerous awards for his portrayal of the character; including "Villain of the Year" at the 2001 British Soap Awards.
Despite his popularity on the show, Phil Mitchell's character has received some criticism and controversy on separate occasions. This came most notably in October 2002 in a scene where Phil brutally attacked and beat up his godson Jamie. The scene was criticised for being too realistic by TV watchdogs; so much so that The Broadcasting Standards Commission upheld 31 complaints from viewers, saying that the scenes were too strong for a programme shown before the 9 pm watershed.
