Phil Wire, also known as the Spider, is the titular secondary antagonist of the Lucky Luke comic of the same name. He is a professional shooter and hitman hired by O'Sullivan to close the Ace of Hearts to get its owner O'Hara, dead or alive.

Biography[]

When O'Sullivan fails to take over his rival O'Hara, and is on the verge of bankruptcy, he hires the hitman Phil Wire as a last resort, intending to take down his business by ridding of O'Hara dead or alive. On his way to the town, Phil robs a stagecoach only to be met by Luke himself. When Phil tries to prevent him from getting inside, Luke throws Phil out of the stagecoach. Phil then bets Luke that the best shot gets the seat, with Phil shooting at the big hand of a clock, and Luke shooting at the small hand. Luke predictably beats Wire, and he takes the stagecoach.

Luke reads a note left behind by Phil, which details of O'Sullivan's plot to send Phil after O'Hara, which gives Luke the idea to pose as him to protect O'Hara. When Luke comes to Bottleneck Gulch while pretending to be Phil, the entire town runs off, and O'Sullivan greets him and brings him to his bar. O'Sullivan instructs Luke to take down O'Hara, still thinking that he is Phil. O'Hara receives news of Phil's supposed coming to Bottleneck Gulch, and prepares to fight back.

O'Hara is joyed to see that "Phil" was actually his old friend Lucky Luke, who tells him all about O'Sullivan's plan to take him out. The two of them stage the death of Phil, with Luke still pretending to be him.

Trivia[]

  • Phil Wire's appearance is a caricature of American actor Jack Palance.
  • Just like Bob Dalton, he was originally meant to be killed by Lucky Luke in early versions of the comic, but this was changed in the final version due to publisher request, as the scene would have been too violent for children.
