Villain Overview

Philip is the secondary antagonist of DreamWorks' 11th full-length animated feature film Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, which is also Aardman's 2nd full-length feature film and the fourth installment (and first feature film) of the Wallace & Gromit franchise.

He is Victor Quartermaine's crazed pet Bull Terrier who helps his owner in hunting down the Were-Rabbit (who is actually a cursed Wallace). He is also Gromit's arch-nemesis.

His vocal sound effects were provided by Frank Welker.

Appearance[]

As stated above, Philip is a Bull Terrier dog with white fur and light brown spots. He also wears a spiked collar.

Biography[]

Philip was the pet dog of Victor Quartermaine and was always seen by his master's side or at least assisting him in doing something. He appeared during Victor's confrontation with Wallace in the woods, but was terrified of Wallace's transformation into the Were-Rabbit. He did not appear again until Victor tried to shoot the Were-Rabbit in 62 West Wallaby Street, but this was a prank set up by Gromit.

When the two caught and locked him in a cage, Gromit did managed to escape sometime later thanks to Hutch. While Victor hunted down the Were-Rabbit, Philip and Gromit fought each other in a "Dogfight". However, this fight ended after Gromit dropped him from the bomb doors and he crashed straight into an inflatable castle, the "Bouncy Tottington Hall", deflating it with his sharp teeth.

In the end, he survived the crash and accidentally bites his own owner trapped in the fake female Were-Rabbit costume, thinking it was Wallace in his Rabbit form, as the group of angry villagers chased him away. It is unknown if Philip was still clinging onto his owner Victor while still trapped in the Were-Rabbit decoy, as the former's fates were unknown. Like Victor, Phillip may have ran out of town alongside him while still clinging onto his rear end.

Other appearances[]

Philip also appears as the secondary antagonist of the Curse of the Were-Rabbit video game, where he especially appears in the mini-game "Maze Cracking" and cutscene "Victor's Victory".

Powers and Abilities[]

Philip is smarter than he looks as he saw Gromit as a worthy opponent and was a skilled fighter against him. His most prominent moment was a mock dog fight with Gromit using airplanes taken from a fairground attraction.

He is also shown to be intelligent enough to know that the Were-Rabbit is beyond his hunting skills, instead preferring to fight Gromit because of the latter's close height to him.

Trivia[]

  • Philip is Gromit’s third arch-enemy after Feathers McGraw from The Wrong Trousers and Preston from A Close Shave. Unlike Phillip, Feathers McGraw and Preston are main antagonists while Philip is serving as the secondary antagonist in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit as Victor is the main antagonist.
  • His vocal effects provided by Frank Welker were uncredited.
  • Phillip was originally going to be a beagle in the concept art and had a comparison of a horse for Victor to be able to ride him.
  • According to the book The Curse of the Were-Rabbit: The Dog Diaries, Philip has a brother named Trevor, an uncle named Rover, and a cousin named Keith.
  • Despite believing Victor as the Were-Rabbit, there are rumours he only bit Victor’s rear end from initially trying to save Victor by believing he was eaten alive by Wallace, non-considered as a traitor.
