No! I knew exactly what I was driving, I left my phone behind on purpose, I was in the surgical suite by design, and I didn’t use some glass award that any idiot would realize was missing. I made a rod out of a special dental polymer, killed him with it, and melted it back down. Then, it’s already in the patient’s mouth, son!
~ Philip's villainous breakdown to Jake Peralta.

Philip Davidson is the main antagonist of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine episode, "The Box".

He is a dentist who had developed an addiction to Diazepam and had thus been stealing it from his dentist office. When his boss, Robert Tupper, found out, Philip arranged a plan to murder him and avoid being fired.

He was portrayed by Sterling K. Brown.

History[]

Background[]

Philip was a dentist working alongside Robert Tupper prior to the episode.

At some point, Philip had developed an addiction to Diazepam and began stealing some of it from work. Eventually, Robert found out and threatened to report him. This causes Philip to plan out Robert’s murder while the other employees had left and murdered him with a makeshift rod before stealing his car with the intent of framing his murder as a random act of violence.

The Box[]

Robert was eventually arrested, but due to insufficient evidence, he was unable to actually be charged. Seeing an opportunity to impress Holt, Jake signs he and Holt up to interrogate Philip with the goal of getting him to confess.

Despite Jake and Holt's efforts, Philip refuses to confess to the crime, insisting that he had been at a crowded bar with a random woman. Eventually, Holt is forced to leave to take care of other matters, but Jake stays behind to continue to try and interrogate Philip.

After a few hours, Philip's lawyer arrives to reveal that time is up and the interrogation is over. Frustrated, Holt confronts Jake over his insistence on handling the case so much, to which Jake admits to wanting to impress Holt. After saying this, Jake quickly goes over the crime scene evidence and confronts Philip despite the lawyer’s protests. Jake then creates a fictional scenario where Philip is portrayed as a bumbling man who killed Robert thanks to several lucky close calls. Eventually, Philip becomes annoyed by Jake insinuating that he was an idiot and confesses to the murder, only for Jake to reveal that he already figured out the details after realizing that Philip's main weakness was his fragile ego.

Philip is then left by Jake and Holt and is presumably arrested, this time with a confession to hold up.
