~ Phillip Dowd complaining about his coworkers. |
Phillip Dowd is a major antagonist in the crime-drama TV series Criminal Minds. He is a narcissistic and paranoid murderer who appears as the main antagonist of the Season 1 episode "L.D.S.K.".
He was portrayed by Timothy Omundson.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
Born in 1971, Dowd suffered from Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Paranoid Personality Disorder, believing he was naturally superior to everyone else, and that others were trying to deprive him of success and happiness out of jealousy. He joined the military at the age of 18 and eventually became a US ranger, but sometime during his time as a US ranger, Dowd was dishonorably discharged for conduct-unbecoming. He then would attempt to become a police officer, but was fired after nine months for not disclosing his dishonorable discharge. Afterwards, he became an ER nurse in Des Plaines, Illinois. His paranoia and constant need to make himself feel superior made him believe that no one at his work appreciated him, so, in 2005, he started sniping people in non-fatal areas of the body so he could save them at the hospital.
L.D.S.K.[]
Dowd began to snipe people with an M4 Carbine, shooting two people in a park and then three at a restaurant. Police suspected Officer Scott McCarty and tracked him down to his car, but when McCarty came out, Dowd shot him in the head, killing him instantly. After this, Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) technical analyst Penelope Garcia realized Dowd would be a strong suspect, and the rest of the BAU raided the hospital he worked in. Dowd then put on combat gear and grabbed his M4 and knocked agent Spencer Reid out. After this he forced agent Aaron Hotchner to kick Reid repeatedly, but this was a ruse to covertly give Reid a gun. Reid then shot Dowd in the head, killing him.

Trivia[]
- Dowd is inspired by multiple real-life criminals:
- Mervin Ray Hughes, a.k.a. "The Serial Shooter", a serial killer of random men on the streets of California, mostly injuring them, but killing two men by the end of his spree. Hughes also shot another man dead years before and is suspected in yet another murder.
- John Allen Muhammad, a.k.a. “The D.C. Sniper”, a serial killer of random people who were sniped on the streets, also holding his own military background.
- Richard Angelo, a.k.a. “The Angel of Death”, a medical serial killer with malignant hero syndrome, who overdosed patients in the hospital he worked in just to resuscitate them personally, killing dozens of patients with his attacks.
- John Ausonius, a.k.a. “The Laser Man”, a Swedish serial assailant and budding serial killer, responsible for sniping and otherwise shooting international citizens in Sweden in public places out of xenophobia, killing one man and scarring the remaining people attacked. Ausonius later executed a Holocaust survivor in Germany.
- Despite the name, Dowd doesn't qualify as a serial killer, as he only killed two people when the requirement for a serial killer is three. Also, serial killers intend to kill their victims, as out of the two people he killed, Dowd only intended to kill Officer Scott McCarty, Henry Sachs was supposed to be injured and taken to the hospital like the rest, but the ambulance arrived too late.
