Eve Harrington's unnamed star-struck fan, who calls herself Phoebe is a minor antagonist of the 1950 film, All About Eve. She claims to be president of the Eve Harrington fan club and just like her idol, is a ruthless star-struck fan who wants to usurp their idol and ruin their life. In Phoebe's case, she wants to ruin Eve's life.

She was portrayed by Barbara Bates.

Biography

After Gertrude Slojinski/Eve Harrington wins her Sarah Siddons award and gives gratitude to Margo Channing, Karen and Lloyd Richards, Bill Sampson and Max Fabian (whom she had manipulated earlier to win that award), Eve suddenly decides to skip a celebration party at Max's place and hands her award over to Addison Dewitt to talk there in her place. Eve gets tired, and is dropped off in a shared taxi ride with Addison. She goes into her apartment and suddenly gets startled by Phoebe, who had broken into Eve's suite and was sleeping on a chair. She's completely out of breath and star-struck. Initially Eve wants about to call the authorities on Phoebe, but she gets flattered by all the attention, and the fact that she looks almost-like a miniature version of herself. Phoebe claims to be writing a report on her idol "About how [she] live(s), what kind of clothes [she] wear(s), what kind of perfume and books" and various other things. She dreams to be like some of the stars who became famous in Hollywood.

When De Witt goes to Eve's bedroom to return Eve's Sarah Sibbons award that she had left in the taxi cab, Phoebe answers the door, and recognizes Addison De Witt. She takes the award from his hands and states that she called herself Phoebe (it's never revealed whether or not this is her real name or a nickname). She tells Addison that she wanted to win an award more than anything else, and Addison tells "Phoebe" that she would have to go to Eve for advice, since she had recently won an award.

At this point, the audience realizes that it won't be too long before Phoebe will be ruthlessly trying to become a famous actress by any means necessary, similar to Eve earlier in the film. Eve will be manipulated and used in pretty much the same way that Margo was earlier.

Eve wanted to know who was at the door and "Phoebe" states it was just a "taxi driver". Eve tells "Phoebe" to put the award on one of the trunks and pack it. As "Phoebe" takes the award to Eve's bedroom andsets the award on a trunk, she notices Eve's glittering outer coat on the bed. She hesitates and then quietly puts it on and clutches the award to her breast in front of a large four-mirrored cheval - one in which Eve would have admired herself. Gracefully and with grave dignity, Phoebe poses before the mirror which provides infinite reflections, symbolically presenting the thousands manipulative women with hopes of stardom out there -- like her. She steps forward and bows, again and again and again, acknowledging imaginary applause from an audience during a curtain call as the film then ends. Phoebe represents the new wave of thousands of ingenue actresses ready to replace the aging, over-age 40 leading ladies who have reached their upper limit during their brief 'lives' as actresses.
