The Phrase are the secondary antagonists of the In Another World With My Smartphone franchise.

They are a group of enigmatic crystalline creatures hailing from the other world of Phrasia, on the search of their former leader Melle, who revealed to be travelling in the form of her own core. Due to this, they indiscriminately attacked and destroyed countless worlds and kingdoms in their terror to chase their leader out, leading to them being the primary cause of the series' conflict.

Appearance[]

In general Phrases have blue, crystalline bodies made of a mysterious material known as Phrasium, which is capable of blocking any form of physical damage directed onto it. On their inside is a core that serves as their life force that also blocks any form of magical attacks directly targetted onto it, but they are not impervious to indirect magical attacks, as well as internal attacks.

Background[]

The Phrase have been pursuing Melle, their previous leader, for a very long time. They have disregarded her requests to be left alone in order to capture her and harness her power for their own purposes. The Phrase massacred everyone on the worlds Melle's core travelled to, including the once-alive Partheno Sacred Empire, since they were unable to find Melle's core when it was within a living being. Ende fended them off for years, managing to form an alliance with Melle (later his girlfriend), and Lycee and Ney in the process.

Present-time, the Phrase allied with the Servile God, a rogue deity within the Pantheon, to produce a beast. The Dominant-Class twins Luto and Leto were changed into a golden cocoon when the beast turned on the deity and devoured him, leading to multiple Divine-Class Phrases appearing from the start of Volume 15. The twins enhanced both their own abilities and the lower class Phrase using this golden power. The Phrase were soon permanently stopped when they, along with the newborn Wicked God and Yula, were annihilated by Touya, Melle and the entire World Alliance during their final invasion on the planet.

Abilities[]

In general every Phrase is made of an unidentified crystal substance (known as Phrasium) that has an unspecified maximum endurance and is capable of passively absorbing magical energy. The Phrase can all be attacked by internal magic attacks like Touya's apport magic or Yumina's Frame Gears explosive bullets since they all have a core that acts as their heart and can absorb directly cast magic but not indirectly cast magic.

In contrast Divine Phrases may either combine with other phrases or mute them through touch. A regular Phrase changes colour when a Divine Phrase touches it; when it reaches the centre, it turns into a Divine Phrase. Every Divine Phrase have this potential, which has an impact on all varieties of ordinary phrases. When a Divine Phrase kills a person, the victim go into a zombification process after dying with a skeleton-like phrase within, and these zombies have a propensity to attack and murder other living things in their path. In addition to being more powerful and having a tougher shell than regular phrases, Divine Phrase also alter the colour of their skin to a golden hue, making it difficult to see their living core without using divine sight.
