Piano Man is a criminal who appears in the Bungo Stray Dogs light novel STORM BRINGER and its manga and stage play adaptations. He was a high-ranking member of the Port Mafia and the founder of his own group, known as Flags, that also serves as a sub-unit group of the Port Mafia.

Appearance[]

Piano Man is fairly tall in height and has lean fingers. He has light hair, depicted as silver in the stage play, with a small black-striped section on the right which is likely meant to resemble piano keys. In the manga, he wears it in a short, centrally parted, chin-length bob; it is marginally longer in the stage play. He is noted as only ever wearing black and white. He is depicted wearing a black formal coat with a white lining and lapels over a white shirt with a checkerboard collar, white necktie with pin, white vest with black buttons, white trousers, white cummerbund, and black formal shoes. His long sleeves hide a watch which contains a piano wire guillotine device.

Personality[]

As the most senior member of the Flags (though whether in age, experience, or both is unclear), Piano Man led the group with a mix of fanciful creativity, delicate precision, and ruthless brutality. Despite being one of the younger mafiosi, he was rumored to be on the verge of becoming a Port Mafia executive. However, his perfectionism could sometimes backfire, causing him to miss deadlines by months if his meticulously crafted supernotes—fake currency—fell short of his standards.

Despite his quirks, Mafia boss Ōgai Mori trusted Piano Man to keep an eye on Chūya Nakahara, a former member of the Sheep who had joined the Mafia. Mori feared that Chūya might betray the organization, but Piano Man's sharp mind and wit turned him into more of a friend than a spy. In fact, Piano Man went against Mori's orders and shared confidential Mafia files with Chūya, revealing secrets that only executives were supposed to know.

In contrast to his deep care and loyalty to his friends was his bloodlust and cheerful disregard for the lives of his opponents. Piano Man was explicitly described as cruel and appeared to enjoy violence and killing, seeming delighted to attack Adam and making defeating him into a game. The primary function of his namesake weapon, the piano wire winding machine, was to decapitate, in contrast to weapons which may be used to temporarily incapacitate or nonfatally injure. He was seen to use it as a threat, such as against his friend Chūya, who he did not wish to kill; however, he was known to use it to actually kill or attempt to kill. He was described as having the "most cold-blooded voice" of any of the Flags, though all of them were quick to resort to violence and at least one of the others had a kill count in the vicinity of 800.
