Piet Smit is the overarching antagonist of the 2009 science fiction action film District 9.
In his characterisation, he is the Managing Director of the MNU stationed in Johannesburg and the father-in-law of Wikus van de Merwe.
He was portrayed by Louis Minnaar.
Biography[]
Smit serves as an executive for Multinational United (MNU), a global weapons manufacturer. He became the father-in-law to Wikus after he married Smit's daughter Tania.
Smit then takes control of the MNU stationed in Johannesburg, South Africa following twenty years of unrest between the locals and the alien Prawns in the slum camp District 9. He plans to have the one million Prawns relocated to a larger camp two hundred kilometers away from the city and appoints Wikus to serve as the head of the relocation process. He also hires a PMC to settle any aggression.
During the relocation process, Wikus is sprayed with a black fuel used by a Prawn named Christopher Johnson, which alters his DNA into that of a mutation between human and Prawn. The mutation morphs his left hand into a Prawn claw. Taking interest in this, Smit has Wikus taken to a lab where he is experimented with the Prawn's weaponry, forcing him to kill a Prawn as a test.
Smit orders Wikus to be vivisected alive so his hybrid organs can be studied before his complete transformation. Smit then tells the grieving Tania that the doctors were trying to save Wikus, not telling her that the operation will be fatal. Wikus escapes from the laboratory and goes on the run. Smit has Koobus Venter, the cruel leader of the PMC hunt down Wikus. Additionally, MNU makes the false accusation that Wikus copulated with the Prawns and carries a contagious disease, making him both the most wanted man in the world and all his friends and family turn against him.
Smit is later seen with Venter discussing that the PMC deducts Wikus was hiding in District 9. At the same time, the MNU headquarters is suddenly attacked by Wikus and Christopher Johnson as they raid the building to find the fuel. Upon gaining it, they return to District 9 to activate the dropship of the mothership, with Smit ordering Venter to bring Wikus back alive.
Following Christopher Johnson and CJ managing to reach the mothership and departing back to their home planet, Wikus' former trainee Fundiswa Mhlanga revealed the truth about the conspiracy and the experimentations conducted on the Prawns. As such, the Prawns were safely transferred to a new camp called District 10. What happened to Smit is unknown.
Personality[]
Piet Smit is a man with high authority over his company and is willing to go through any means to ensure the safety of humanity from the Prawns. However, this also means that he shows no concern over the care for the Prawns just as long as they are prevented from increasing in numbers, as well as having some of them killed for experimentation. When Wilkus becomes infected and turns into a Prawn, Smit spreads false rumors to ensure he has no safety or shelter whilst running from his men.
Despite all his hardships, Smit appears to show protection towards his daughter Tania and does what he can to keep her safe from interfering with his goals. However, this involves that he was lying to her.
