~ The Hosts describing the dangers of the Piglins to the Hero. |
The Piglins are major antagonists in the sandbox survival video game franchise Minecraft, most notably serving as the main antagonists of Minecraft Legends.
They are mutated pig-like creatures native the Nether dimension, known for their aggression and lust for gold. They are separated in three factions: the Horde of the Bastion, Hunt, and Spore, each with similar and unique Piglin variants. Under the leadership of the Great Hog, they plan to conquer and lay waste on the Overworld.
In vanilla Minecraft, they are neutral mobs, with the exception of Piglin Brutes. While they are common in Nether Wastes and Crimson Forests, they mainly reside in large numbers in Bastion Remnants.
They also appear as some of the many hostile mobs in Minecraft Dungeons, mainly in the Flames of the Nether DLC. They can also be found in Ancient Hunts and the Tower.
Appearance[]
They widely vary in size and body-type, but the basic Piglins like Mace Runts and Blaze Runts, are short, possibly cute pig-like creatures who wear dark bandannas or no bandannas and wear brown overalls. They wield many weapons, such as maces, blaze rods, blades, swords, and spears. Some may be bigger than the runts and have more armour, while the leaders are gigantic.
Personality[]
The Piglins are insane, gross, and sadistic monsters who care about nothing but their own lives. They are also very dumb, seeing that they fail everything their bosses tell them to do. Sometimes, they would even kill each other just their personal enjoyment. They pollute the land and attack villages just for the sheer sadistic fun of it.
In vanilla Minecraft, Piglins are still extremely hostile to players, especially if they are poking around their chests. However, the Piglins are willing to barter useful items for golden ingots, even if they are actively attacking a player. Wearing gold armour can make the Piglins friendly, however they will still retaliate if attacked or catching a player opening a chest. If a Piglin if hit, they will keep pursuing the assailant until they are out of range. In this level of aggression, they cannot be distracted by golden ingots or golden armour.

Horde Generals[]
Massive, powerful, and insane Piglins are leaders of their respective hordes: the Horde of the Hunt, Horde of the Spore, and Horde of the Bastion. During the Nether war, they all participate in destroying and invading the Overworld, as well as polluting it by building Piglin outposts. They all fall under the rule of the Great Hog.
- The Beast: They are the ferocious leader of the Horde of the Hunt. They might be the shortest horde generals, but easily the fastest thanks to his Hoglin mount. Strangely, they seems to never get off it, even during meetings. They possesses a devastating bone club capable of knocking an entire Warboar into the air. Their main specialty is hunting, sending their troops on frequent missions to hunt Warboars and even raid villages.
- The Devourer: They are the lethargic leader of the Horde of the Spore. The Devourer enjoys bathing in their soup bath, where their Piglin runts bring them an endless supply of food. They are lazy and careless, sometimes scarfing down their own Piglins while not giving it a second thought.
- The Unbreakable: They are the leader of the Horde of the Bastion, feared by even their own Piglins. They are equipped with heavy armour and an arm cannon capable of firing magma. Their Piglin outposts are the hardest to destroy, due to their sheer number of powerful troops and defences.

These are common Piglin foot soldiers found in every single hoard, recognizable by their small bodies and big heads. Though they might be weak compared to other more advanced troops in the army, they can still get the job done with my overwhelming the enemy with sheer numbers. Piglin Runts can also fill the role of support units in the army.

Advanced Units[]
These are troops more powerful than the basic Piglin Runt, usually exclusive to either one or two hordes. They all possess unique abilities, utilities, and weapons that make the Piglin army stand out as a powerful and dangerous faction.
- Brute: These mid-sized Piglins are the Horde of the Bastion's elite units. Wielding two saw blades, the Brutes can perform a quick, deadly whirlwind attack. They wear armour reminiscent of vanilla Minecraft's Piglin Brutes.
- Sporeback: These nasty Piglins are the Horde of the Spore's elite units. With the mushrooms growing on their back, they use them as a grenade as both an explosive attack and to snare enemies to the ground, leaving them vulnerable to other Piglins.
- Seeker: Native to both the Horde of the Hunt and Horde of the Spore, the Seekers carry explosive mushrooms which they can hurl at anyone, inflicting massive damage.

- Portal Guard: These bulky, heavily armoured Piglins use both their heavy flails and steel blades to defend their Nether portal. Their incredible strength and defence are one of the reasons why the Horde of the Bastion's outposts are the most difficult to take down.
- Pigmadillo: These tough Piglins have a unique style of attack; curling up into a devastating wrecking ball that effortlessly plows throw enemy units, even walls. Their incredible offence is one of the reasons why the Horde of the Hunt are considered the most aggressive horde.
- Lava Launcher: Native to the Horde of the Spore, they are massive, sluggish Hoglins controlled by a Piglin Runt. As their name would suggest, they are equipped with a contraption that fired a destructive blob of magma at the enemy.
Minecraft[]
The Piglins are a common encounter in the Nether dimension. There are a handful of variants, each having unique behaviours and abilities. Most of them are hostile to Wither Skeletons, except for Hoglins and Zombified Piglins.
- Piglins: Frequently encountered in mainly Crimson Forests and Nether Wastes, the Piglins are one of the most unique mobs in game, having many different behaviours and mechanics. Wielding either golden swords or crossbows, they will attack any player they see, unless they are wearing gold armour. However, gold armour will not protect the player if they either attack the Piglin or open a chest near them. In the Bastion structure, Piglins are around every corner, guarding it's loot chests from players. Using golden ingots, the player can barter with the Piglins, who will trade the ingot for a random useful item.
- Zombified Piglin: These undead variants are the most abundant mob in the Nether, endlessly spawning in the Nether Wastes. Unlike other undead mob, Zombified Piglins are neutral, so they will retaliate in massive groups if hit even once. When a normal Piglin enters the Overworld as well as the End, they will turn into a Zombified Piglin after a short transformation.
- Piglin Brute: These are powerful variants of the Piglin, only found in Bastions. They can be recognized by their black outfit, gold arm-guard, face scar, and golden axes. They take their job incredible seriously, as they will ruthlessly attack the player, even if they are wearing golden armour. Additionally, Piglin Brutes cannot be distracted by golden ingots, which makes defeating them a lot more difficult. Like regular Piglins, they turn into their zombified counterparts when entering the Overworld or End, the only difference being that they keep their golden axes.
- Hoglin: Native to Crimson Forests and some variants of Bastions, Hoglins are quadruped, feral beasts that use their tusks to bash the player into the air, making them a dangerous threat. However, they drop porkchops and leather upon death, making them one of the only food sources in the Nether. They can also be bred with two Crimson Fungi.
- Zoglin: They are undead versions of the Hoglins, who are hostile to almost every mob in the game, even their Zombified Piglin counterparts. Notably, they are extremely rare, because they cannot spawn naturally, only doing so when a player brings it into the Overworld.
Minecraft Dungeons[]
Piglins are a hostile mob found in the dungeon-crawler spinoff, Minecraft Dungeons, mostly in the Flames of the Nether DLC. They also appear quite frequently in Ancient Hunts.
- Piglin: Unlike their vanilla counterparts, they are completely hostile towards the player, even if they are wearing armour with any gold on it. Despite this, they are not hostile towards Wither Skeletons. Piglin Brutes appear as only a stronger variant of the Piglin, unlike the base game, where the two are completely different mobs.
- Piglin Hunter: Piglins wielding crossbows are categorized as Piglin Hunters. Their weapons are always equipped with the piercing enchantment.
- Armoured Piglins: They are taller, armoured variants of the Piglins and Piglin Hunters, equipped with either gold or Netherite helmets. They wear Piglin Brute outfits that slightly vary on color, depending on the variant.
- Fungus Thrower: Similar to the Sporeback in Minecraft Legends, the fungus throws mushroom grenades which burst into a lingering area of damage.
- Zombified Piglins: All Piglins menioned above have a zombified variant. Unlike the base game, Zombified Piglins are able to use crossbows.
- Hoglin: Having a unique charge attack, the Hoglins are a dangerous enemy to encounter. When defeating them, they will sometimes drop three porkchops. Compared to the base game, the Hoglins are smaller and are noticeably higher pitched, similar to their baby variants.
- Piglin Merchant: Unlike almost every other Piglin in the franchise, the Piglin Merchant is completely passive, even willing to sell the Hero gilded gear in exchange for gold.
Other Media[]
Animation vs. Minecraft[]
In season 3 of the web series, Animation vs. Minecraft, Piglins appear as both supporting protagonists and antagonists. In episode "The Piglin War," Zombified Piglins are the main antagonists, serving as obstacles for Blue and the Piglin Tribe. When they eventually escape into a lava lake with the help of Striders, a Zombified Piglin grabs the Piglin child in a final attempt to kill it. Fortunately, Blue fearlessly jumps into lava to save the Piglin child. After this heroic act, the Piglin Tribe gratefully accepts Blue as a friend.
During the prequel of "The King," King Orange and Purple stormed into a bastion, forcing the resident Piglin Brutes to crown them as leaders. They would then appear as supporting antagonists in multiple episodes
- In "Parkour," the Piglin Brutes make their debut, serving as King Orange's minions. They guard each of the stick figure's parkour islands, with the intention of keeping them there, even if it means resorting to violence. However, all of their hostages escape, much to King Orange's dismay.
- In "Titan Ravager," the Piglin Brutes make a minor appearance, guarding the Nether portals that Blue and Yellow either found or created.
- In "The Ultimate Weapon," Purple rallied up all the Piglin Brutes in the bastion, making them face off against the stick figures while King Orange fights the Second Coming. During the massive brawl, many Piglin Brutes were either killed or knocked out by the stick figures. When King Orange summoned a black hole, the remaining Piglin Brutes were sucked into it.
In "Monster School," a Zombified Piglin named Zombieswine appears as one of the students.
Both the Zombified Piglins and Piglin Brutes would make a final appearance during the ending of "The King," as they can be seen getting resurrected near the Nether fortress and bastion respectively.

Trivia[]
- In 2010, user Miclee would suggest a concept of a "Pigman" mob. The texture of the mob would soon be added into the alpha version of Minecraft. The developers later revealed that this mob would either live in villages or be bodyguards. However, these roles would be taken by the Villagers and Iron Golems respectively. Unfortunately, the Pigman concept would be shelved and its texture removed from the game files.
- Before 1.16, the most abundant mob in the Nether were the famous Zombie Pigmen. In highly-anticipated Nether update, the Pigmen were retextured and renamed to "Zombified Piglins" in order to better fit with the new Piglins.
- Piglins have a custom, wider helmet modle to match their head shape.
- Sometimes, Piglins will hunt Hoglins. After defeating one, the Piglins have a 10% chance to do a celebratory "victory dance," bobbing their heads and waving their arms in a T-pose.
- In Minecraft Legends, they do not zombify when outside the Nether unlike their Vanilla counterparts, despite spending most of the game in the Overworld. This is because the Spore Medics make the Overworld air breathable for them.
- Unlike vanilla, Piglins in Minecraft Dungeons do not attack Wither Skeletons.
- While Piglins attack players with gold armor for mining nether gold ore, it’s likely the Piglins mine nether gold ore in order to make their swords, implying that they are extremely possessive of the Nether's gold resources.
