| ~ Pip's most famous quote, hinting at his carefully orchestrated revenge. |
Philip "Pip" Harrison otherwise known as Ian is the main antagonist in the first episode of the black comedy horror anthology series Inside No. 9, "Sardines".
Initially an unassuming and boring party guest he ultimately reveals himself in the end to be an imposter of the real Ian and in fact a grown up victim of Andrew's sexual assault looking for revenge against his abuser.
He was portrayed by Tim Key.
Biography[]
As a child Pip attended a scout jamboree with the boys Carl and John, part of the main family in the episode of whom he was good friends with. Unfortunately however on one particular night Andrew the father of Carl groomed and raped all three boys leaving each of them traumatised and emotionally damaged with Carl suffering frequent sexual abuse from Andrew developing genophobia while John due to the assault taking place in a bathroom with Andrew's excuse being "he was teaching the boys how to wash themselves" developed ablutophobia. Pip's family was paid off by Andrew to never speak of the encounter and they moved away. Pip however still traumatized was furious at this outcome and sought revenge.
Decades later Pip posed as an employee at the work of another set of Andrew's relatives Mark and Jeremy and attended an engagement party for Jeremy and his fiancée Rebecca. At the party an annual game of Sardines began with Jeremy being the first one to hide, as such he picked the wardrobe nearby the bathroom he was raped in and was gradually joined by various other members of the family, none of whom recognized him. At one point during the game the group took a break to stretch their legs mainly due to one family member Rachel suffering from severe claustrophobia and becoming uncomfortable stuck in the wardrobe.
At this point Pip managed to stay outside undetected while the wardrobe began filling up more until finally everyone aside from him was back. The room becomes tense due to John's body odour and both Andrew and Geraldine reminiscing about the jamboree from all those years ago causing Carl to grow more and more frustrated. After the tension dissipates Carl's husband Stuart points out that since they're all here no one else is actually looking for them at which point Jeremy mentions he needs to pick up Ian much to the confusion of Mark who points out that Ian was with them but in the toilet when Jeremy reveals he didn't know who that man was causing the group to grow worried as they hear a lock turning outside of the wardrobe and someone singing the sardines song.
Outside Pip has locked them in and has begun dousing the wardrobe with lighter-fluid and leans against the wardrobe preparing to light it ablaze at which point a horrified Carl recognises the voice of his old friend and the episode ends.
Personality[]
Pip was very intelligent, being able to successfully fool the family into thinking he was just an ordinary and incredibly boring employee at Mark and Jeremy's company, however in reality he was actually a very cold, calculating and vengeful figure who managed to patiently wait and pull off his revenge plot undetected by everyone save for Carl.
Appearance[]
Pip was a rather unassuming man befitting the nature of the episode's twist, being an average heighted, fair-skinned man with an average build, short brown hair, brown eyes and thick square glasses. He wore a black suit and shoes with a pinstripe shirt and green striped tie.
