Pygocentrus nattereri, better known as the Original Piranhas or just Piranhas, are the titular main antagonists of the 2010 horror comedy film Piranha 3D and its 2012 sequel Piranha 3DD. Both of the films are also remakes of the 1978 film Piranha.
They are an ancient race of prehistoric piranhas that used to live in the Colorado River for two million years right up until the Pleistocene Epoch (Ice Age). More than two million years later, these prehistoric species survived the extinction by cannibalizing each other beneath the surface of the Earth and were eventually released to devour any living thing they prey on when the quake in the lake hit.
In the first film, their vocal sound effects were provided by Michael B. Koff and in the second film, their vocal sound effects were provided by Michael Rayle.
History[]
Piranha 3D[]
The film begins in an arid desert while a fisherman named Matthew “Matt” Boyd sits in his boat in the lake and fishes for bass while drinking beer. As something pulls the line to his fishing rod, he places his beer bottle on the side of the boat which it would then fall off the boat and sink all the way down into the water. As Matt catches a fish with his fishing hook, the beer bottle sinks and lands on the underwater floor which causes an underwater earthquake and the ground breaks open. While the ground opens, the quake causes a whirlpool to appear right next to Matt and as Matt tries to get the boat's engine to start, he gets knocked into the water in the center of the whirlpool, while a school of piranhas exit out of the ground and swims towards the whirlpool. The piranhas then begin biting Matt and they brutally eat and tear his skin and body parts to pieces, as the whirlpool then fades away and Matt's mangled hand pops out of the water and then sinks right back under the water. Many weeks later, spring break arrives and the people in Lake Victoria come out to enjoy their vacation as the people crowd along the lake as they party, and many others also ride their speed boats into the lake. Sheriff Julie Forrester apprehends a young man that drove over a parking meter and caused trouble in the town with his friends, and as he tries to resist arrest, she tases him with her pocket taser and tells his friends to back off.
A college student named Jake Forrester arrives to Lake Victoria and meets with an old friend of his named Kelly, which she tells him about the chaos that is happening in Lake Victoria because of the spring break. While Jake tells her that he only arrived to pick up his sister Laura, Kelly's boyfriend Todd Dupree and his friends arrive and Kelly goes inside the car, while the friends throw their drink at Jake and they speed off. Laura meets up with a porn actress named Danni Arslow and she stresses to Danni about how long she has been waiting for her brother Jake to arrive. Jake arrives in a bad mood, because of the drink that was thrown at him, which Danni compliments Jake's shirt despite his mood. While both Danni and Jake talk to each other, Danni's boss named Derrick Jones arrives and orders a camera crew to get specific items needed for their next film. Derrick asks Jake if he wants a job showing them around town for good spots to shoot their film, but Derrick gets a call and remarks that he wants the biggest boat in the town so he can be able to make his film and after he hangs up, he convinces Jake to take the job and leaves with Danni. While Jake is in his home, on a porn website made by Derrick, his mother Julie enters the room, which he quickly turns the computer off and Julie talks to him, telling him that despite his plans for tomorrow, he should still fulfill his responsibility of taking care of Laura and his brother Zane, while she is busy at work. Jake puts her mind at ease and tells her that he will still be taking care of his brother and sister, despite his busy schedule for tomorrow.
Later in the evening, Julie and her partner Deputy Fallon drive out to the lake where Matt went missing. While they reach the dock, Fallon tells Julie that the local government would be sending a team of divers to investigate the inside of the ground, caused by the quake at the bottom of the lake. They both spot the boat that belonged to Matt near the end of the dock and Julie tries to reach for the boat but ends up falling into the lake and the rotten mangled corpse of Matt resurfaces next to her, causing her to panic. Fallon and Julie pull the corpse out of the lake and Fallon explains that the body has been in the water for weeks. As Julie suggests closing down the lake until they get back an autopsy report, Fallon tells her that they can't close the lake because of the big financial week for the town and it would be more easier to drain the lake instead of closing it. Later, a man dives off a cliff into the lake, and as he resurfaces from the water, the piranhas appear and the man gets killed by the piranhas. After that, Jake, Laura and Zane hang out together on their dock, which Jake pleads to his siblings to let him leave them alone so that he can spend his day so Laura tells him to give her sixty dollars and they'll let him leave. Jake gives them the money and tells them to not pick up the phone, don't answer the door and to not leave the house. Julie and her second partner Novak Radzinsky are greeted with the two divers, Sam and Paula, and they ask them to take them to where the underwater quake happened, which they do. Jake joins a huge crowd and ends up finding the boat that Derrick ordered and Danni and another actress named Crystal Shepherd partying on the boat while being filmed by Derrick. While Jake navigates through the crowd, he bumps into Kelly.
Kelly asks Jake why he's not taking care of his brother and sister, which before Jake explains why, Derrick calls for Jake to get on the boat, which he comes up to Jake and asks Kelly if she wants to join their film and that he haves champagne, which Kelly accepts the offer and gets on the boat. Todd and his friend sees Kelly on the boat and they ask that she was supposed to hang out with them, which Derrick asks Kelly if Todd is her boyfriend, which she lies to him about Todd being a guy from her school and not her boyfriend and as Todd and his friends see Jake on the boat, they both get disappointed and Derrick, Jake, Danni, Crystal, Andrew and Kelly drive away from the crowd on the boat. While they leave on the boat, Zane decides to go on a boat to see if he can catch fish, which Laura tells Zane that they were supposed to stay in the house, Zane still goes on the boat and Laura decides to get on the boat too. Later, Jake and the others drive the boat to the middle of the lake and they dock the boat in the spot of the lake. Danni and Crystal dive straight into the water and they decide to remove their bathing suits and swim naked in the water, while Kelly uses a floatie on the water and keeps her distance from them. They both swim around under the water while Jake, Andrew and Derrick films them. Jake then gets a phone call from Julie which she asks him where he is which he tells her that he is at home, but she tells him that no one picked up the phone. Jake lies and tells her that he went out for a bit, but is back home, which Derrick and Andrew starts screaming at the actresses swimming in the water while filming and Julie asks Jake if someone is with him, which he hangs up the phone.
After Jake hung up the phone, he sees that Kelly is no longer on the floatie, so he dives into the water to search for her, but he then sees Kelly back on the boat and she tells him to get back on the boat, because they ended the film. Meanwhile, Zane and Laura rowed their boat into a small island on the lake, but Zane didn't tie the boat properly, leaving the boat stranded far away from them in the lake. They both see a speed boat in the distance, which Laura goes closer to the water to ask for help, but she accidentally steps on a broken beer bottle on the ground and the blood attracts one of the piranhas, which Laura manages to leave the shoreline before a piranha gets to her. Julie and Novak dock their boat at the spot of the quake, which Novak tells Julie that the map on their device is a map of the cavern system beneath the lake, which opened up from the quake and left the two lakes connected to one another because of the cracks that appeared afterward. Sam and Paula go down into the lake and they explore the opened-up cracks under the water. While they enter deeper in the cracks, they lose connection with Julie and Novak and while they enter into a cave that opened up and they see a large cavern full of plants with egg stocks that belong to the piranhas on them. As Sam tries to grab one of the eggs, he gets bitten by one of the piranhas and as he lights his flare under the water, he sees a school of piranhas surrounding around him and gets killed by the piranhas. Paula sees Sam getting eaten by the piranhas and tries to help him, but she also ends up getting killed in the process. Novak heads down the water to see what's happening, which he sees Paula being eaten, which he manages to drag the mangled corpse of the diver and one of the piranhas onto the boat. Meanwhile, Derrick tries to convince Kelly to join their next film, which she accepts the offer, but Danni convinces Derrick that Jake should join the film as well, which Jake accepts. When they are about to kiss to end the film, Kelly pushes Jake out of her way and vomits out the tequila off the boat, into the water.
Julie and Novak goes to the home that is owned by a marine biologist named Carl Goodman, which he lets them in and they bring in a bucket with a piranha that they brought with them. As Carl dumps a piranha into a fish tank, and Julie asks him what it is doing in the lake and that their divers died because of them. Carl asks on who released the piranhas into the lake, which Julie tells him what he is talking about and Carl explains that the piranhas that they found has vanished off the face of the Earth for more than two million years ago. Carl then goes into his office and brings a fossil of a piranha to them, telling them that the piranhas used to swim the Colorado River, right up until the Pleistocene Epoch and that he doesn't understand how they found them, still alive. As Novak explains to Carl that they found them in the quake from the lake and as Carl's wife questions on how they could have survived for so long, Carl theorizes that they must have fought each other and ate each other in order to survive. Carl explains that the piranhas hunt in packs but not for protection, only for an overwhelming force which they are organized and methodical, which the first bite draws blood and the blood draws the pack which he then tells them that they should go and kill the piranhas. Meanwhile, Jake is tasked to film the surrounding scenario while Derrick and the others party on the boat. Jake sees his brother and sister waving for help on the island, which Derrick gets angry at Jake for missing a good shot, but Jake tries to convince him that his siblings need help, but he doesn't relent. As Jake tells Derrick that his mother is the town sheriff, Derrick relents and lets Jake have his way which later, a woman that is parasailing gets her legs eaten off by the piranhas.
The piranha massacre in Lake Victoria
The party in the lake starts getting chaotic, which a wet t-shirt host tells the DJ to get everyone to get more chaotic which he does so. Julie, Novak and Fallon arrives to the party and gets everyone's attention with his megaphone. Fallon tells everyone that there's an emergency and to get out of the water, but the DJ starts the music once more and the crowd goes back to partying. Meanwhile, the boat arrives at the island where Jake's siblings are and Jake tells them to get on the boat so they can go back home, but Derrick gets angry at the slow pace and rushes the siblings onboard the boat. Jake tells Kelly to watch over his siblings and to keep them away from Derrick, but the boat's propeller gets stuck and Derrick gets mad at Jake and starts blaming everything on Jake. Derrick accuses Jake of planning a mutiny on him and tells Jake to go down to the water to fix the propeller himself while he steers the boat. Julie and the deputies tries to get the crowd out of the water, but the crowd ignores them and the piranhas arrive to begin their massacre. One of the piranhas starts attacking a sorority girl on an inner tube and everyone begins hysterically panicking and quickly swim their way to shore. Julie, Fallon and Novak helps as many people as they can, but the boats around them become overcrowded and many people start to die. Derrick manages to get the propeller unstuck, but ends up crashing the boat into a rock and it knocks the boat, causing him and Crystal to fall into the water. As Derrick watches Crystal get torn by the piranhas underwater, he resurfaces and Danni manages to get Derrick back onto the boat, but Derrick's legs have been skinned and mangled by the piranhas as he cries about his penis being eaten by the piranhas.
Fallon and the other deputies try to get as many people off the water as possible which then Fallon grabs a propeller off a boat and begins using the propeller as a makeshift weapon à la a chainsaw to kill as many piranhas as possible, while it gives enough time for people to go to shore but while Fallon kills many piranhas, they then start chewing off his legs and he slowly sinks in the water. Julie and Novak arrives to Jake and the others and she tells them that she will take them to safety, but Jake offers to stay behind and try to figure out a way to save Kelly. Julie ties a tightrope onto the boat to hers and as the siblings and Danni crosses the rope, Danni gets attacked by the piranhas as the piranhas then begins eating her face and she falls into the water and dies. As the siblings make it to Julie's boat, Jake gets ready to throw the corpse of Derrick into the water as bait, but Derrick then wakes up and says his final words and dies as Jake then throws him into the water. Jake dives down in the water and finds Kelly from under the boat, which he uses a rope that is attached from Julie's boat and ties the rope onto each other as he sets off an explosion in the boat and they both get dragged back to Julie's boat before the explosion happens, killing most of the piranhas. The movie ends with Carl talking to Julie on the radio which he tells her that a piranha that they left him with has no mature reproductive organs and that the piranhas that killed the divers and that they killed were not fully developed and they were juveniles. As Novak wonders aloud where the adult piranhas are, a dolphin-sized adult piranha jumps out of the water and devours him.
Piranha 3DD[]
The film begins with a news broadcast explaining the events that happened at Lake Victoria from the previous film and that Lake Victoria has now become a quarantine area with the dead corpses of the fish soaked up into the beach. One evening, two farmers named Clayton and Mo arrive to an old rundown dock to search around the water for their cow that they had named Sarah. While they search in the water, they don't see that they are surrounded by hundreds of piranha eggs that would be ready to hatch if disturbed. They find the carcass of Sarah and while Clayton uses a pole to drag the carcass of Sarah, one of the piranha eggs falls out from the mouth of Sarah and one of the piranhas passes across the carcass. Mo uses his flashlight to shine at the belly of the carcass, which when Clayton touches the belly, another one of the eggs comes out of the carcass but from her anus. As Clayton grabs a lighter and shines it at the behind of the carcass, another egg comes out which the lighter causes the cow carcass to explode and the eggs start hatching. The piranhas begin to bite Clayton and he sinks into the water, while the piranhas also attack Mo and he also sinks into the water and dies. Clayton then resurfaces out of the water with two of the piranha fry chewing on both of his cheeks on his face, which Clayton then grabs one of the piranhas, bites its head off and spits it out his mouth before then collapsing in the water and dies.
The following morning, a water park owner named Chet films an advertisement for his water park called the Big Wet which is full of women. His commercial is then interrupted by Chet's stepdaughter named Maddy and she shouts at Chet, berating him that he fired the old lifeguards and replacing them with strippers. He argues that he can run the water park with success that way, which he then shows her a brand new section of the park that was recently built, called the Adult Pool. Maddy further berates him for the display of nudity, and she reminds him that she still owns 49% of the waterpark and that she should have a say in how things are run. In the evening, while fireworks fly to the sky and teenagers gather around the pools, Maddy's friends named Ashley and Shelby arrive and Ashley tells her that Shelby likes a boy named Josh and she will consider asking him out later tonight. Shelby tells Josh to meet her at the lake, which Josh accepts it as another one of Maddy's friends named Barry also arrives. Josh and his friend Travis decides to light a firework inside a beer bottle which lights out, almost hitting Maddy's ex-boyfriend who is also a police officer named Kyle, which he arrives and talks with Maddy. Maddy tells Kyle that she is back in town but only for the summer and Kyle states that it should be an interesting summer now that she's here. Later, Shelby and Josh both sit at the edge of a dock at the lake together which Shelby suggests that they should both go swimming in the water, naked. While both Shelby and Josh jump in the lake and have fun swimming in the lake, a pocket of piranha fry arrive and swim around them, as one of the piranhas swims inside Shelby's vagina and she starts getting uncomfortable so she rushes back to the shore and they both go back on the dock and put their clothes back on.
Later, Ashley and Travis are inside a yellow van near the lake and they begin praying before they have sex. Ashley handcuffs Travis to the van as she hides the key inside her bra, and begins to untie his pants. Ashley accidentally hits the shifter of the van, and the van drives forward into the lake and the water begins to slowly fill up the van. Ashley and Travis both panic as they try to find the key for the handcuffs, which Ashley swims out of the van and gets on top of the roof of the van to call for help, leaving Travis handcuffed inside the van. The piranhas swarm inside the van and they kill Travis as Ashley sees Travis being eaten and continues to scream for help. Shelby apologizes to Josh for dragging him into the water which he reassures her that he enjoyed their time outside together. Shelby asks Josh if he thinks Ashley is prettier than her and Josh responds that he doesn't which they both leave and meanwhile, Maddy turns off the power to the water park after hours, and heads to her room to go to bed. The next day, the water park is once again filled with people and while Barry picks up trash with a litter trident, he sees one of the employees named Big Dave humping the water drain and Barry gets weird about it and leaves him. Maddy wonders why Ashley and Travis are not here for their employee attendance and she asks Shelby if she has seen them but she tells her that she hasn't seen any of them this morning. Shelby then vomits on the floor, presumably from the alcohol she consumed last night, and Big Dave arrives and stomps on the vomit. Later, the van is discovered by Kyle and he orders the van to be towed back into the land, which when they finally get it back on land, they find that no one is inside and have no clue where Ashley and Travis have gone.
Kyle finds Shelby and Maddy and he tells Shelby about the news and asks if she knows where they could be, but she tells him that she doesn't and walks off to the dock from the lake, upset. Maddy follows Shelby to the dock and Shelby tells Maddy that even if Ashley was sometimes a pain to be with, she still considers her like a sister and doesn't know why she would just disappear. One of the piranhas then jump out of the water to bite Shelby's foot which she quickly moves her feet away from the water and they begin to attack the dock. As Maddy and Shelby run, the piranhas break the board she is standing on and it causes her to be separated from Maddy. Maddy tries to get Shelby to jump to her, but she is scared that she might die. She manages to jump to Maddy but the dock knocks them off and they fall into the water. They both make it onto land and one of the piranhas jumps out of the water at Maddy but she catches and smashes a piranha with a rock, killing it. Barry arrives after he hears the commotion and sees a piranha that they killed, which Kyle arrives and takes both Barry and Maddy to Lake Victoria so they can visit with Carl Goodman from the previous film. They arrive to his house and Carl answers the door but tries to send them away, thinking that they are fans of the popular video that was made about him but Maddy convinces him that the piranhas are back and he lets them in. Carl tells the others that Cross Lake isn't connected to Lake Victoria and that the piranhas must be migrating through underground lakes and rivers. He shows a piranha that Julie brought to him and reveals to them that he's been studying them for almost a year. Carl then puts a layer of galvanized steel between a piranha and a frog and he shows the group that it can chew through steel. As a piranha breaks through the steel, Barry quickly takes the frog out of the fish tank, stating that he used to have one as a kid.
Carl then takes the group to his office and explains to them that the piranhas have spent centuries living in underground lakes and rivers, that are full of sulfur dioxide from the geothermal activity and it means that the piranhas are probably confusing areas like water parks for their underground homes. Maddy tells Carl and the group that the water park drains directly into a lake which means that the piranhas are currently migrating toward the lake. Carl also tells the group that he tried to tell everyone about the dangers that the piranhas can pose to the general populace, but no one listened to him after the release of his book. Barry tells him that he is a fan of his book and that he read it before, which surprises Carl and he hands the group copies of his book. Kyle tells the group that he could send out a dive team by tomorrow, but Maddy tells him that it would already be too late because the water park opens tomorrow, which means that they have to travel back immediately. Later, Josh lets Shelby stay at his house for the night because she feels sick from the stress of Ashley's disappearance which Shelby tells Josh to have sex with her, which he accepts and they begin to have sex. Meanwhile, Maddy prepares to go to the lake, to check the pipe that leads to the water park. She tries to convince Barry to come with her to spot when the piranhas would come, but he tells her that he can't swim. Maddy jumps into the lake and finds the pipe but the piranhas arrive and Kyle gets Maddy back to shore. While Josh and Shelby are having sex, Shelby tries to tell Josh to stop because of her feeling a piranha inside her stomach, but he doesn't listen and a piranha then comes out of Shelby and bites his penis. Shelby starts having a seizure, while Josh stumbles across the house, fighting off a piranha biting him. He crashes into a mirror and finds his way into the kitchen, which he grabs a knife and slices off his penis.
Shelby wakes up from her seizure and searches for Josh, which she sees blood all around the house and finds a piranha on the kitchen floor and Josh appears behind her and screams at her, telling her what did she do to him as she sees what happened to him. Chet gets pulled over by Kyle and it is revealed that he is working for Chet and takes bribes so that Chet can conduct unlawful business at his water park. Chet hands Kyle an envelope filled with money, and Kyle tells Chet what Maddy and Barry are up to. He reassures him that the pipe is holding up well, and that the piranhas will not break in, unless there is another way into the water park. As Maddy and Barry are talking about Kyle, Shelby approaches them and tells them about what happened to Josh. A few hours later, they take Josh and Shelby to the hospital and Kyle tells that Josh is in the recovery room, and Shelby is not making any sense about what happened to Josh. Maddy heads home, and gets in the bathtub to dress her wound, but as she falls asleep, countless piranha fry start falling into the water and flood into her bathtub as an adult piranha begins to attack her, but she wakes up in her bathtub, turning out that she had a nightmare. Later, the water park is filled with people from all over the country to celebrate. One of the people that came to the water park is Deputy Fallon that survived from the previous movie, but now in a wheelchair. Chet then introduces a celebrity to the crowd which is David Hasselhoff to officially start the opening of his water park, while David Hasselhoff takes pictures with many people from the crowd and it establishes him as the main attraction of the water park.
Maddy hears a noise and goes to check it out, which she finds the well being dug. Chet tells her that they won't have to pay for water utilities anymore after the well is finished. Maddy tells him about the piranhas, but Chet doesn't listen. Meanwhile, a kid named David tells his mom that his leg got bit by a piranha, but his mom tells him to go to the lifeguard to get a bandage from him. David goes to David Hasselhoff who is serving as the guest lifeguard and asks him for one, but David Hasselhoff instead gives him an autograph. While people are partying in the water park, a school of piranhas enter into the water park through the pipe system and everyone starts panicking as the piranhas start attacking and killing people. Fallon sees the ongoing piranha attacks so he tells Andrew to give him his titanium legs and he goes in the water. He then starts shooting at the piranhas with the built-in shotgun that is attached to one of his titanium legs and he manages to save many children from the pool, as the piranhas try their best to bite his legs. A woman tries to get David Hasselhoff to help the people, but he tells him that he is a celebrity and not a lifeguard. He then hears David screaming in the water while he tells David Hasselhoff that he's a lifeguard, so David Hasselhoff jumps into the water and saves David, while everyone is still being attacked by the piranhas. Chet looks down from a platform and sees the ongoing carnage as Maddy rushes up to him and punches him in the face. She tells him that she has to drain the pool to send the piranhas back into the lake. She finds Barry and tells him to run to the draining room and push the lever, which after she tells him, Barry tells Maddy that he has had feelings for her for years, and she kisses him in the cheek before he runs to the drain lever.
Chet wanders around the water park, clearly confused at the situation and he tells himself that it's not his fault that this happened. Barry finds Big Dave and one of the piranhas is biting him in the butt, so he manages to pull a piranha off him and tells him that they should head to the draining room immediately. Chet grabs the money from his office and sees a kid with her dead mother, so he gives the kid some of the money before then using a golf cart to drive away but as he backs up the golf cart, he accidentally runs the kid over, killing her. As he drives away, he doesn't see a wire hanging in the banners and he gets decapitated and his head lands on a woman as she then throws the head into the water. Kyle sees Maddy in the pool, trying to save as many people as possible. The wave pool gets turned up and he grabs Maddy's arm to try and save her. Kyle tells her that he didn't know any of this would happen and that he took bribes from Chet so he drops her back in the water and runs away.
The aftermath of Big Wet water park
Barry shows up and sees Maddy stuck on the pool drain underwater and an adult piranha swimming towards her, so he grabs the trident and throws it at a dolphin-sized piranha, killing it. Barry jumps into the water and saves Maddy out of the pool. Big Dave makes it to the draining room, but instead of turning on the drain, he dumps chlorine from the barrels inside the pipe system and throws a lit joint inside, causing a massive explosion in the water park which kills most of the piranhas. The explosion sends the trident into the sky and it impales Kyle in the face, killing him. Maddy gets a phone call from Carl Goodman and he tells her that the piranhas are evolving and they are learning to walk since the piranha at his house broke out of his fish tank and escaped. The movie ends with David recording one of the surviving piranhas with his phone and as his mother tells him to get away from it, a piranha decapitates him and everyone starts recording the kid's corpse while the mother cries hysterically.
Behavior[]
| “ | There's thousands of them. Thousands! And they're pissed! | „ |
| ~ Novak Radzinsky correctly describing piranhas' super-aggressive nature.
|
Piranhas in the film downright embody their real-life counterparts' exaggerated and erroneous reputation as one of the most ferocious freshwater fish as well as typical man-eating monsters; seemingly always hungry, aggressive, bloodthirsty, and possess infamous taste of human flesh. What further set these piranhas apart from their real-life counterparts which primarily a timid scavenger and forager is being seemingly in perpetual fight-or-flight response as Novak described the behavior of the one he and Julie brought to Carl to be extremely "pissed". Carl speculated it to be attributed to their two million years old predicament in the underground lake they originally trapped within; the pocket ecosystem spared these creatures from extinction yet lacked a sufficient, self-sustaining food source that they resorted to cannibalism; weaker piranhas had to perish so most persistent of their kind survived. If anything, current generations of these piranhas are decidedly malicious compared to their ancestors which just as instinctive as aforementioned real-life counterparts.
Trivia[]
- In the original 1978 film, the piranhas were a genetically engineered experiment that were planned on being used for underwater warfare during the Vietnam War instead of being a fictionalized prehistoric species.
