The unnamed Pirate Goom trio, known as Syrup's Gang, are a group of Pirate Gooms that appear as the secondary antagonists of the video game Wario Land II released on the Game Boy and Game Boy Color. They are members of the Black Sugar Gang and the side-kicks to Captain Syrup. They were sent by Syrup to raid Wario's castle and steal all of his treasure.

They are extremely clumsy and dimwitted, and are shown to fear Wario. Two of them seem to dislike the third member of the group, who constantly bumps into the others and is always the last to follow behind Syrup. While none of them ever directly fight Wario during his quest, they hinder him during cutscenes as he chases them. They are effortlessly defeated by Wario at the very end along with their captain.

Biographies[]

Wario Land II[]

The Pirate Triad are seen sneaking into Wario's Castle at the beginning of the game. They stole all of Wario's treasure and flooded his castle in water with his giant faucet. In the main route, Wario woke up, and immediately chased after the pirates after realizing they had robbed him.

Outside the castle, the pirates were on their way to SS Tea Cup, the Black Sugar Gang's pirate ship, when they realized that Wario is chasing after them. To distract him, they chased away his hen from her nest, and Wario temporarily gave up the chase to go rescue her.

After Wario's successful rescue of his hen, he resumed his chase of the three villains, which led him to the SS Tea Cup. Wario dropped the anchor to prevent the pirates from sailing to their headquarters, Syrup Castle. The pirates and their leader Captain Syrup instead fleed the ship by hot air balloon to Maze Woods. While the pirates fleed, one of the highest-ranking members of the Black Sugar Gang, Bobo attempted to deal with Wario, but was quickly defeated by the purple-clad thief.

The pirates and Syrup then used a train to get to Syrup Castle, but Wario quickly stopped the train, so they ran on foot to the castle, which ended up working. Wario, having journeyed through the entire town, finally reached Syrup's Castle aswell.

The main three are not seen ever again, until the ending cutscene, where they are seen flying out of the castle after the explosion along with Captain Syrup, having been finally defeated by Wario, who then took back all his treasure from them along with the rest of their treasure, and thus, The Black Sugar Gang was finally defeated.

While they are indirectly defeated by the explosion of the Syrup Castle in most endings, the only endings where they are directly beaten by Wario are the "Ruins at the Bottom of the Sea" and "Uncanny Mansion" endings, although the latter turns out to be a dream afterwards.

Personality[]

While most Pirate Gooms don't have much personalities, the Pirate Triad have unique personalities to distinguish them from others. Two of the members of the trio have similar personalities, doing their jobs while communicating with eachother. They are all scared of Wario, and are easily annoyed at the bumpy member of the trio, who constantly bumps into his fellow Pirate Gooms and despite being the most annoying and cowardly, is the one who hinders Wario and stops him from catching up to them in most pathways.

Unlike other Pirate Gooms, none of the three ever fight Wario by themselves, usually either running away or taking advantage of the environment to hinder Wario whenever confronted.

Appearance[]

All of them have the same appearance as a regular Pirate Goom, having jointed eyes, a pirate headband, brown and peach skin, and trident-like spears that they are always seen carrying.

Trivia[]

  • The Pirate Triad do not have any confirmed names, and are only referred to as members of the Black Sugar Gang in the manual. However, their theme song is called Syrup's Gang, making it their only official name.
  • Despite not ever being fought, they fly out of Syrup Castle after it's explosion along with Captain Syrup, implying they may have been in Captain Syrup's pod during the final boss fight along with various other Pirate Gooms.
  • The Pirate Triad have a tendency to leave one of them behind, it is unknown if the third member is just really slow, or the other two just dislike him. The latter is more likely, as they appear to be annoyed at him whenever he bumps into them.
  • Their exact rank in the Black Sugar Gang is unknown, as Pirate Gooms seem to be the lowest rank in the Black Sugar Gang but the Pirate Triad appear to be right-hands to Captain Syrup and are seemingly sent on more dangerous missions, considering they were sent to rob Wario, someone who had caused the Black Sugar Gang a lot of trouble, let alone alert him of the robbery and beckon him to chase after them.
    • It is possible that they are the second-in-commands of the Black Sugar Gang, though it could also be Bobo or the Giant Spear Man.
  • They are the first, and overall only secondary antagonists in the Wario Land series, if not counting the bosses.
  • They are nowhere to be seen in the "Really Final Chapter", likely because they were defeated prior.
  • They are meant to represent the Black Sugar Gang as a whole, considering they are Pirate Gooms, the most common members of the gang, and they are only referred to as the Black Sugar Gang in all manuals.
