Pizpot Gargravarr is a major antagonist in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

Biography

Pizpot Gargravarr is the custodian of the Total Perspective Vortex, a horrible device which fries one's brain when they see themselves in relation to the Universe. Gargravarr waits around the Vortex on planet Frogstar B, which is said to be the "most evil place in the Galaxy". Pizpot Gargravarr appears just after Zaphod's arrival on the planet when he is bought there by Frogstar Fighters. Gargravarr says hello and explains the situation of the natives of Frogstar B, who cursed the ground and mutated into birds. The birds can talk, but are misanthropic and bitter. Gargravarr boasts about himself, and he says that how he is so depressed and his body and himself have arguments, and it won't let him see him. He says his body is on Frogstar C, at a party.

Done feeling sorry for himself, Gargravarr becomes cold and businesslike and says he must take Zaphod down to the Total Perspective Vortex, and he does so, taking him up into an elevator, and Zaphod has the curious feeling of the man beside him, but being invisible, Gargravarr does not show up. Gargravarr has been told to kill Zaphod in the Vortex, so he asks him to step inside. He muses when Zaphod locks himself in the Vortex how he rather liked Zaphod, but to his total shock, even though the Vortex is working, it fails to kill Zaphod but rather shows him as the most important thing in the Universe. Zaphod not only shocks Gargravarr but completely destroys the Vortex, by ripping out the fairy cake used to simulate the whole Universe, and eats the cake. Gargravarr says that he has to go and tell his masters about the event, and he does, and Zaphod runs, knowing Gargravarr will come back for him when he is done.
