~ Pizzaface when Pizza Time runs out, followed by his evil laugh. |
“ | I'm going to go ahead and talk about something that I've been telling others who know about this place of worship that you did this. Well, we're down from your pizzeria, and we're down from this tower. There are customers, and they want to see one of these things. So I got a friend, he went down one of the floors and this guy came up next to me, and the idea was, why is it that when you're in the upper part of the tower there is this Pizzaface character, then there's a man from your previous life leading the way? There's a pizza in your tower with all this information. | „ |
~ Pizza Granny (poorly) monologuing about the titular Pizza Tower while also indirectly foreshadowing the existence of Pizzahead. |
Totino Pizzahead, known for most of the story as Pizzaface, is the main antagonist and final boss of the 2023 indie game Pizza Tower.
He is the old business rival and archenemy of Peppino Spaghetti who went on to create and oversee the Pizza Tower with the intent of using it to destroy Peppino's pizzeria. Throughout the game, he hides inside and pilots a mech made of pizza called Pizzaface.
Appearance[]
Pizzahead is a long-limbed, lanky clown-like man with a pizza slice for a head. He wears suspenders and a bow tie and has a bulbous red nose and red cheeks. He is constantly smiling and rarely deviates from his giant cheeky grin. This is a stark contrast to the protagonist Peppino, who is constantly anxious and nervous with very few times where he deviates to a smile.
His Pizzaface vehicle appears as a giant floating pizza that resembles a man's face, with peppers making up its mouth, mustache, and eyebrows, a mushroom for its nose, and two slices of pepperoni for its eyes. The toppings on its face can vary however, as in the opening cutscene, its nose is a whole tomato, its eyes turn into olives if it is outrun by Peppino and its eyes also turn into pineapple rings when it laughs in its boss fight.
Personality[]
In the Pizzaface vehicle, he is a seemingly stereotypical long-mustached villain who's scheming to destroy Peppino's pizzeria out of malice.
However, Pizzahead's true personality is that of a comical, chaotic being who doesn't take anyone or anything seriously. He is a cartoonishly dangerous individual who desires to cause as much chaos as possible, and who also plans to destroy Peppino's pizzeria to show that there can only be one pizzeria in the business. He's also implied to have a crashing business himself, and that's why he desires to destroy Peppino's pizzeria.
Despite this, Pizzahead does seem to have his standards as when playing as the Noise, he seems genuinely scared of the gremlin, even frowning in terror as he detonates a giant bomb. This could imply that Pizzahead does derive sadistic pleasure from angering Peppino and that facing off an equally sadistic and chaotic foe made the fight less enjoyable for Pizzahead.
It's important, however, to note that The Noise playthrough entirely revolves around a bastardisation of the original playthrough, a movie rendition of the game's events in which Noise makes himself out to be the hero as opposed to Peppino. The only canon depiction of Pizzaface in the Noise playthrough is with him on the stage in the end screen, leaning up against a knocked-over Pizza Tower cut out, crying, possibly lamenting the destruction of the Pizza Tower or the fact that he had to act in the Noise’s movie, possibly to make ends meet.
Biography[]
Background[]
Much of Pizzahead's past is unknown, but in the level "Don't Make a Sound" it's implied that along with the Toppin Monsters, he was a mascot or employee of the now-defunct Pizza Boy's Pizz-Pizza, which could explain why he set out to destroy Peppino's Pizzeria, as he was jealous of the restaurant still being around despite Peppino's debts.
At some point in time, Pizzahead came into ownership of the Pizza Tower, either creating it himself or taking control of it, as some dialogue from Pizza Granny implies it's a place of worship, though she tends to be an unreliable narrator. In the tower, he placed a curse on John, transforming him into a hive mind of multiple Pillar Johns which connect the different pocket dimensions/rooms of the tower to it, with John's original body holding up the whole tower. He also employs John's brother Gerome as the tower's only janitor. Due to the multiple restaurant-themed levels (including a ruined Pizzeria where Fake Peppino's battle takes place) around the tower, it's likely that Pizzahead has claimed other restaurants before, with their remains being absorbed into the tower. It's also somewhat implied that Pizzahead kidnapped the Toppins and imprisoned them in the tower's many levels.
Pizzahead's relations with the other bosses are mostly vague, although it's known that he encountered Pepperman in the past when he attempted to raid the Pizza Tower, pacifying him by offering him an art studio in the tower. Shortly before the events of the game, he also tricks the Vigilante into believing Peppino is a criminal, causing the Cheeseslime to hunt him down. Regardless, all the bosses seem to have common interests with Pizzahead as they seem alright with being pulled up for a boss rush in the finale.
Pizza Tower[]
Piloting the Pizzaface vehicle, Pizzahead arrives at Peppino's Pizzeria, informing the chef that he will blow up his restaurant with a nuclear laser at the top of the Pizza Tower. Sprinting into action, Peppino races into the Tower, battling through multiple levels and bosses. During the Pizza Time sequence of each regular level (excluding WAR), if Peppino fails to leave the level in time, Pizzaface will awaken and begin hounding him down, knocking him out of the level upon contact and forcing Peppino to restart it. However, it's possible for the chef to outrun Pizzaface and reach the exit, causing him to cry.
Opening the boss gate at the "Staff Only" level, Peppino walks in on Pizzaface taking a shower, causing the pizza to exclaim and quickly fly off. Arriving at the top of the tower, Peppino finally has a showdown with the wicked pizza, and after destroying the vehicle, causes Pizzahead to reveal himself and fight Peppino himself. Midway through the fight, Pizzahead pulls up all the previous bosses from below for a final boss rush. However, at this point, Peppino is so enraged that he pummels through all the bosses before finally taking on Pizzahead himself.
Boss Fight[]
On the top of the tower where you fight Pizzaface, he has two moves. He summons enemies by shooting them out of its mushroom nose and slams the ground. You must uppercut an enemy into him to defeat him.
Once hit 8 times, Pizzahead will come out, sitting on a toilet reading a newspaper. In its seemingly final moments, Pizzaface ejects him out and explodes, causing him to land in front of Peppino, scaring him with the image of his old rival. He reaches into the tower and rummages about before giving you a gun as the real fight begins.
Most of his attacks in the second phase consist of stealing other people's attacks, including Gustavo's Brick the Rat which he throws like a baseball, The Vigilante's dynamite, and uzi, of which the latter is used to shoot himself but he misses, Peppino's sword powerup, which he cannot pull and instead launches a bunch of Forknights into the air with their forks functioning as projectiles, and his TV Status screen, which bounces around with a screaming Peppino on it. After a few seconds, Pizzaface re-enters the fight, though severely wounded and malfunctioning as he coughs up gears that deal damage down onto the floor. There's also a chance Pizzahead will accidentally pull up a lewd drawing of himself, sheepishly dropping it before changing to another attack.
In the third phase of the fight, he reaches for the screen and pulls out the previous bosses (in order: Pepperman, the Vigilante, The Noise, and Fake Peppino) to try and invoke a boss rush, only for Peppino to roar in frustrated rage and begin beating the crap out of them one by one. When it came to Pizzahead's turn, he used all original attacks instead, which were boxing gloves, a fly swatter, somersaulting, and inflating himself to perform a sumo stomp, the latter of which would stun Peppino if he didn't jump when it is used.
Ending[]
At the end of the final boss fight against him, he is brutally beaten by Peppino into the sky before being piledriven into the Pizza Tower, but in the end credits screen, it appears he is still alive, albeit badly injured. If Peppino has collected all of the Tower Secret Treasures, he will use them to revive John and lift his curse, only for Pizzahead to instantly recover from his injuries, too. John angered at being cursed by him beforehand, uppercuts the wicked pizza into the distance before happily reuniting with his brother. Despite this, Pizzahead stubbornly survives and decides to lay low, appearing in many of the after-credits artworks in disguise with Peppino not noticing him. It also seems he has repaired his Pizzaface vehicle some time after his defeat, and is now waiting for his next opportunity to pester Peppino and his business again.
The Noise Update[]
Pizzahead's role in the update largely remains the same, though he doesn't appear in the intro cutscene at the start thanks to the events of the update likely being made up by the Noise. However, noticeable changes are that during his boss fight, only 3 of the previous bosses are fought thanks to the Doise's death and that instead of being filled with rage, the Noise inexplicably gains a Super Noise form, allowing him to blitz down his opponents similarly to Peppino. Furthermore, instead of being pummelled into the sky before getting piledrived into the Tower, Pizzahead is blown up by a giant bomb that the Noise detonates, leaving him charred and with his head in the ground.
Afterwards, it's revealed that the entire playthrough was simply a movie the Noise made to try and steal Peppino's thunder, and the real Pizzahead can be found crying next to a cutout of the Pizza Tower, having helped the Noise film the movie along with the other bosses.

Trivia[]
- Though unconfirmed, the name Pizzaface could be a reference to the YouTube video/album Super Ghostbusters by "Vargskelethor", quoted, "I call the pizza place... and I tell them... you have a pizza face! [demonic gurgling]" This is due to the Pizza Tower Guy being a big fan of Vinesauce.
- Pizzahead's theme, "Unexpectancy, Part 2" uses samples from the 1920s song "After You Get What You Want, You Don’t Want It" by Irving Berlin.
- Pizzahead's appearance has slight resemblance to Lefty, the mascot of Hamburger Helper.
- Pizzahead may also be based off Ronald McDonald, the mascot of McDonald's based on his clown-like features and the costume he wears in one of the after-credits artworks. His surprisingly powerful nature and intense boss fight may also reference the MUGEN iteration of Ronald McDonald, who is infamous for his powerful attacks and challenging AI.
- A popular theory in the community is that the levels in Floor 5 are symbolic of Pizzahead's descent into villainy, with "Don't Make A Sound" chronicling the failure of his restaurant, "WAR" symbolizing his desperation to save his own pizzeria and the methods he took to save it and "Pizzascare" also being symbolic of the monster Pizzahead has become (due to Pizzascare being a horror-themed version of Pizzascape, an earlier level).
- Another more popular theory is that the levels of Floor 5 are based off Peppino's phobias, deliberately engineered to discourage him from stopping Pizzahead.
- Pizzahead's boss battle has received critical acclaim from many game reviewers, with the boss rush segment and final phase receiving praise for their intensity and climatic end.
- According to some concept art, Pizzahead was meant to snap and go into a frenzied rage in the third phase of his boss fight, fully intent on killing Peppino. However, one of the developers McPig stated that he removed this concept as he wanted Pizzahead to retain his cartoony vibes throughout the fight and to contrast Peppino's anger in the fight.
- It is possible that Pizzahead's Pizzaface vehicle could be sentient or another entity altogether, as Pizzahead is revealed to have been reading a newspaper on the toilet during the first phase of his boss fight, meaning that Pizzaface was the one in control and attacking Peppino.
- According to the developers of Pizza Tower, the Forknight attack Pizzahead uses was meant to pull up the entire level of Pizzascape instead. This concept was likely not implemented due to how chaotic the fight would become.
- As the level Peppibot Factory depicts a factory producing Peppino-like robots that also help to make pizza, it's possible that Pizzahead envies Peppino's pizza-making skills and wants to steal them to make his own pizzas whilst closing down the original Peppino's business.
- Some fans have pointed out the noticeable lack of the nuclear laser Pizzaface threatens to destroy Peppino's Pizza with on the top of the Pizza Tower, which could imply that Pizzahead never really intended to blow up Peppino's restaurant and just wanted to toy with his feelings and agitate him.
