Biography[]
Plasus was the apparent ruler of the planet Ardana, with the title of High Advisor. Although the planet was a member of the Federation, it had a stratified caste-based structure. Plasus and the rest of the ruling class, including his daughter Droxine, lived in the floating city of Stratos while the troglytes, who were considered less intelligent, worked in the mines. Plasus agreed to provide the Federation with zenite needed to halt a plague but when Kirk and Spock beamed down to the mines to collect the shipment, they were attacked by troglytes, who had hidden the zenite. Plasus and his guards came to their rescue, with Plasus explaining there had been recent unrest, which he blamed on "disruptors".
Plasus took the pair back to Stratos as his guests but they soon became uncomfortable with the planet's society and with Plasus' methods of dealing with unrest. The troglytes demanded the right to live on the surface instead of being forced into mines. Plasus tried to order one that had been captured tortured, but the man threw himself to his death. He then had Vanna, a troglyte who had been brought to Stratos as a servant and become one of the leaders of the rebellion, tortured as well. Kirk and Spock intervened and Plasus ordered her taken back to confinement, but also ordered Kirk and Spock off Stratos, insisting they would recover the zenite in their own way. He also ordered his guards to kill the pair if they returned.
The Enterprise crew quickly determined that the apparent lack of intelligence in the troglytes was the result of environmental conditions: A gas caused by the zenite mining reduced their intelligence and caused aggression. Hence, the troglytes who lived on Stratos had thrown off the effects and began requesting equal rights. Kirk and his crew contacted Plasus and told him what they had discovered, offering to provide the troglytes with a mask that would protect them from the effects in return for the zenite. However, Plasus refused to believed their claims.
Kirk freed Vanna and trapped her in one of the mines with him, then had Plasus beamed to their location, in order to prove the gas existed. He forced Plasus to mine in order to release the gas. Plasus eventually began to be affected by it and attacked Kirk in a blind range. Vanna signalled the Enterprise to beam them all aboard and Plasus was quickly subdued.
Later, Plasus was present as Vanna handed over the zenite to Kirk and Spock. He agreed the troglytes could have the protected masks but was still against any idea of social reform or mediation, while Vanna remained committed to changing things. Plasus threatened to have Kirk charged with abduction but Kirk reminded him he could also face charges for attacking and plotting to kill a starship captain. Plasus agreed to drop the matter.
