The Playtime Company, often shortened to Playtime Co., are the overarching antagonists of the Poppy Playtime franchise.
Playtime Co. was once thriving toy company created by Elliot Ludwig to bring joy to children around the world. However, following his death Ludwig's role as CEO would be taken by the neglectful Head of Innovation, Leith Pierre who hired Elliot's former protégé Dr. Harley Sawyer to preform the Bigger Bodies Initiative. Under Sawyer and Leith's management, the company began to convert orphans and employees into living Toy-experiments as slaves in an attempt to increase their workforce and cut costs.
The company would continue their unethical experimentation and slavery until a massacre known as the Hour of Joy would force it to permanently close on August 8, 1995, leaving the factory abandoned and controlled by the Toys, thus the legacy and hopes of Elliot Ludwig were now forever destroyed.
History[]
Playtime Co. was founded in 1930 by an entrepreneur named Elliot Ludwig. Ludwig's ambitions were focused on creating amazing toys to bring joy to children around the world. In 1950 they would invent their first successful toy Poppy Playtime and in the following decades, would release other popular toys such as Bron the Dinosaur, Boxy Boo, Candy Cat, and Huggy Wuggy, further increasing their popularity. In 1976, to support his ambitions to bring joy to children and give them a safe home, Elliot created the company's very own on-site orphanage, Playcare.
At some point in time, Elliot started the Young Geniuses Program to gather the brightest minds of the younger generation to help further Playtime Co's pursuit in science and innovation. One member was a young man by the name of Harley Sawyer, whom Elliot would take a personal interest in. The two grew close as they worked together on experiments. However, Ludwig soon noticed a much darker side in Sawyer, realizing he had zero humility and cared for progress only for progress' sake and not for the benefit of mankind. Thus, Ludwig would expel Sawyer from the program, a betrayal which would antagonize the young man to forever despise his former mentor.
Around the late 1980s to early 1990s, Elliot had passed away and the Head of Innovation Leith Pierre took over the company. However Playtime began to experience a depression. Problems such as declining profits, lack of safety, toy recalls, and the constant threats of lawsuits have caused the company to fail. In 1990, the now Dr. Harley Sawyer was hired by Leith to solve the problem. Harley then approached the higher-ups with a solution in what he called the "Bigger Bodies Initiative". With this project, Sawyer proposed increasing their workforce by replacing their employees with living toys who did not have to be paid, nor could file lawsuits against the company. The project was approved, and thus Playtime Co. would spend the next 5 years using their Playcare's orphans and disobedient employees as subjects in brutal experimentation that would turn them into living toys.
To further prevent the risk of lawsuits, the Bigger Bodies Initiative was hidden from the lower-ranking employees. However, this did not stop a few employees from noticing the unusual changes in the factory. One employee, Marcus Brickley, had noticed a living PJ Pug-A-Pillar roaming the hallways. He attempted to report his concerns to Leith, but was quickly dismissed. Rowan Stoll, the head of IT, had managed to discover the truth regarding the initiative, and prepared an FTP server with all of the evidence to expose the company. Yet before being able to release it to the public, he was silenced by Dr. Sawyer and eaten by Boxy Boo.
On August 8th, 1995, The Prototype would orchestrate an event known as The Hour of Joy, gathering all the living toys (with the exception of Poppy) to rebel against the company and kill almost everyone within the Factory. After everyone in the facilities were killed, the factory was forced to permanently close its doors, ultimately tainting the legacy of Elliot Ludwig and his dreams. The toys remained in the factory, and used the corpses of their victims as a source of food. Eventually, this food source either dwindled or was cut off, leading to various toys turning on each other for sustenance for the next decade.
In 2005, an anonymous individual sent a letter to the unnamed protagonist, calling for them to return to the factory and "find the flower".
