Giant toys. We can increase our workforce and simultaneously decrease the number of lawsuits and people on our payroll, IF... the people we have working... aren't. People.
~ Harley Sawyer revealing the creation and purpose of the toys.

Playtime Co.'s Experiments, are the main antagonists of the Poppy Playtime franchise.

They are former humans (primarily orphan children, sometimes employees) who were forcibly transformed into giant versions of Playtime Co's toys to serve the company as slaves so they would not have to spend money on payroll or potential lawsuits. Each toy was equipped with various powers and traits that were suitable for different tasks around the factory.

Some examples of these are Mommy Longlegs with her extendable arms and legs to get a high view of the Game Station, and watch over the children as they took their tests. Boxy Boo was in charge of “clean up” due to his body containing trash compactor like qualities and being able to devour any employee that might pose as a liability. Catnap could breathe blood red gas that could put the children to sleep to avoid causing trouble and make it easier to move them to the operation room to become a toy and Huggy Wuggy being in charge of security and keeping an eye on the main floor of the factory with his superhuman strength, speed and ability to sneak around silently.

Certain other experiments were also chosen for more advanced roles, such as Yarnaby: a powerful and aggressive lion-like predator created to be Harley Sawyer’s personal attack dog, and Doey the Doughman, who was uniquely created using three children in order to fulfill multiple jobs. Over the years, the staff and higher ups at Playtime (mainly Harley) would regularly abuse and cruelly mistreat them leading to one experiment, the Prototype, organizing a rebellion called the "Hour of Joy" leading to all the experiments murdering everyone in the factory regardless if they were guilty or innocent, leaving Playtime Co. with no other options but to permanently close its own doors, and ending the legacy and hopes of Elliot Ludwig.

Ten years later, an unnamed employee would return to the factory to find their missing co-workers, only to be confronted by the now-ravenous toys who feast on living flesh to survive, and now must find a way to survive these toys while working with Poppy to defeat the leader behind the monsters: The Prototype.

History[]

At some point, Poppy Playtime, one of the star toys of Playtime Co., was brought to life using parts from the deceased daughter of either Playtime's founder and original CEO Elliot Ludwig or the company's head of innovation Leith Pierre, making Poppy one of the successful experiments predating the Bigger Bodies Initiative. Years later, following Ludwig's passing, Playtime Co. hit financial troubles around 1989 due to the recall of the character CatNap from the Smiling Critters toy line, due to numerous reports of children suffering from nightmares related to the scent emitting from the Catnap plushes. Possibly around that time or a year later, the company created the Prototype; Experiment 1006, as the prime example for the ideal vessel that Playtime is trying to create, though he would prove to be not only highly intelligent but also very dangerous. In January 1990, the head of innovation and new CEO of the company, Leith Pierre hired Elliot's former protégé, Dr. Harley Sawyer, as Head of Special Projects for the company so he could the find solution to the Playtime's financial crisis. Sawyer was disgusted and ashamed at the company's failures: The profits were declining, the experiments were failing, and people were seeing things that they shouldn't.

So he came to Playtime's higher ups with a solution: The Bigger Bodies Initiative, which they seek to create giant living versions of the company's toys. With them, they could increase their workforce and decrease the people on their payroll and avoid potential lawsuits because the people who would be working for them would not be people. Leith Pierre and the higher-ups were on board with the idea and even funded the project. The process consisted of taking vital parts of a human's body and implanting them into toys via a complex operation. After several failed attempts, they succeeded in creating Experiment 1160; Boxy Boo, who was tasked with killing any and all employees who threaten to expose the company. This would also simultaneously satiate the creature's appetite for human flesh.

Boxy Boo was just the beginning as Playtime would create several other experiments based off their toys. They would primarily use unsuspecting orphans from Playtime Co.'s orphanage, Playcare. They would test their intelligence, reflexes and endurance using the games at the Game Station and Sawyer would determine which toy they should be turned into to. Several toys were made with distinct purposes; Mommy Long Legs would run the Game Station, Huggy Wuggy would act as the factory's security, CatNap would act as the guardian of Playcare's dormitory, Home Sweet Home, and would use his red smoke to gas the children to sleep, so the scientists could extract them and transform them into toys. However, the toys were mistreated and abused by Playtime's staff with it being mentioned they would be stuck at, beaten and torn. They would also be locked up in an underground prison for containment and conditioning. Several toys attempted to fight back and escape, but to no avail. The Prototype would try to sabotage the Bigger Bodies Initiative in any way he could, but his efforts always failed. Eventually, even Harley Sawyer himself would be turned into an experiment by Playtime due to his uncooperative behavior and recklessness following the Theater Incident.

Soon enough, the Prototype devised a plan to free his brethren. At 11:00 AM, on August 8th, 1995, with The Prototype's help, the monstrous toys broke out and caused carnage in Playtime Co's factory, murdering any employees in their sight, regardless if they were guilty or innocent. When it was done, their bodies were dragged to the lower levels of the factory and devoured by the toys to stay alive. (This massacre would be known as The Hour of Joy). However, the toys could not leave the factory because they would not be able to live in the outside world without being treated the exact same way or someone else trying to replicate the experiments. Following the Hour of Joy, the Prototype ruled the factory with domineering control and influence, and had also having locked away Poppy in a doll case. Very few of the staff survived the horrific massacre, with the only known survivors being Leith Pierre, his assistant Sharon, and a scientist known only as as P.W. ,The Prototype, however, spared the orphans out of supposed kindness and kept them with him in the labs, albeit in an indefinite deep sleep. Facing outcry from concerned citizens over the sudden disappearance of the employees, Playtime Co. had been left with no other options but to permanently close its own doors, ending the legacy of Elliot Ludwig and shattering his efforts to make a better world.

Ten years later, an unnamed employee was given a letter, implying that their co-workers were still alive. They returned to the factory, only to be trapped inside with the ravenous toys. The Intruder would then free Poppy Playtime and the two would team up (along with getting Kissy Missy to join them) to defeat the experiments, kill the Prototype and destroy the Playtime Co. toy factory once and for all.

Trivia[]

  • The only known humans to become toys are Marie Payne, who became Experiment 1222: Mommy Long Legs, Thomas Clarke, who became the Experiment 1199: Bron, Theodore Grambell, who became Experiment 1188: CatNap, Jack Ayers, Kevin Barnes, and Matthew Hallard, who together became Experiment 1322: Doey the Doughman, and Quinn Navidson who become Experiment 1166: Yarnaby.
    • Harley Sawyer is the sole exception, as he's not a toy along with the Prototype.
  • The only experiments who had their numbering confirmed were The Prototype (Experiment 1006), Boxy Boo (Experiment 1160), Huggy Wuggy (Experiment 1170), Bron (Experiment 1199), Mommy Long Legs (Experiment 1222), Bunzo Bunny (Experiment 1176), PJ Pug-a-Pillar (Experiment 1174), CatNap (Experiment 1188), The Doctor (Experiment 1354), Yarnaby (Experiment 1166), Pianosaurus (Experiment 1163), and Doey the Doughman (Experiment 1322).
  • It's been revealed in Project Playtime that the largest toys in the factory, were actually a newer initiative, called Bigger Bodies, which would be used to replace employees, making work way easier in the factory, the first one of this initiative was the Experiment, Boxy Boo.
  • It is unknown if the toys need hydration or fresh air to survive, though it is confirmed that the Prototype is the only one among them who doesn't need to eat.
  • The toys are similar to the animatronics from the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, as both groups were mascots of their respective companies and got possessed by children, killing any adult they find in their sight.
  • As each Chapter is completed starting in the first and second, the members of the Experiments are heavily dwindling, leaving only very few left to go. Some like PJ from the second chapter, Huggy and several Mini Critters are still alive while many others are killed.
