~ Harley Sawyer revealing the creation and purpose of the toys. |
Playtime Co.'s Experiments are the main antagonists of the Poppy Playtime franchise.
They are former humans (primarily orphan children, sometimes employees) who were forcibly transformed into giant versions of Playtime Co's toys to serve the company as slaves so they would not have to spend money on payroll or potential lawsuits. Over the years, the staff and higher ups at Playtime (mainly Harley) would regularly abuse and mistreat them leading to one experiment organizing a rebellion called the "Hour of Joy" leading to all the experiments murdering everyone in the factory regardless if they were guilty or innocent.
Ten years later, an unnamed employee would return to the factory to find their missing co-workers, only to be confronted by the now-ravenous toys who feast on living flesh to survive, and now must find a way to survive these toys while working with Poppy to defeat the leader behind the monsters: The Prototype.
History[]
At some point, Playtime Co's founder, Elliot Ludwig, hoped to create living toys by using a poppy gel mixture, believing it to have life altering properties. After various failed attempts, he succeeded in bringing his star toy, Poppy Playtime, to life (presumably using the soul of his deceased daughter). Years later, Elliot died and Playtime hit financial troubles due to the recall of their Smiling Critters toy line in 1989. In 1990, the head of innovation Leith Pierre hired Elliot's former protege, Dr. Harley Sawyer, as Head of Special Projects for the company. Sawyer was disgusted and ashamed at the company's failures. The profits were declining, the experiments were failing, and people were seeing things that they shouldn't. So he came to Playtime's higher ups with a solution; The Bigger Bodies Initiative. Giant living versions of the company's toys. With them, they could increase their workforce and decrease the people on their payroll and potential lawsuits because the people who would be working for them would not be people. Leith and the higher ups were on board with the idea and even funded the project. The process consisted of taking vital parts of a human's body and implanting them into toys via a complex operation. They even created the Prototype; Experiment 1006, however, he would prove to be highly intelligent, yet very dangerous. After several failed attempts, they succeeded in creating one Experiment 1160; Boxy Boo, who was tasked with killing any and all employees who threaten to expose the company. This would also simultaneously satiate the creature's appetite for human flesh.
Boxy Boo was just the beginning as Playtime would create several other experiments based off their toys. They would primarily use unsuspecting orphans from Playtime Co.'s orphanage, Playcare. They would test their intelligence, reflexes and endurance using the games at the Gamestation and Sawyer would determine which toy they should be turned into to. Several toys were made with distinct purposes; Mommy Long Legs would run the Gamestation, Huggy Wuggy would act as the factory's security, CatNap would act as the guardian of Playcare's dormitory, Home Sweet Home, and would use his red smoke to gas the children to sleep, so the scientists could extract them and transform them into toys. However, the toys were mistreated and abused by Playtime's staff with it being mentioned they would be stuck at, beaten and torn. They would also be locked up in an underground prison for containment and conditioning. Several toys attempted to fight back and escape, but to no avail. The Prototype would try to sabotage the Bigger Bodies Initiative in any way he could, but his efforts always failed. Eventually, even Harley Sawyer himself would be turned into an experiment by Playtime due to his uncooperative behaviors and recklessness. Soon enough, the Prototype devised a plan to free his brethren. At 11:00 am, on August 8th, 1995, with The Prototype's help, the monstrous toys broke out and caused a carnage in the Poppy Playtime's factory, murdering all employees in it regardless if they were guilty or innocent. When it was done, the bodies were dragged to the lower levels of the factory and devoured by the toys to stay alive. (This massacre would be known as The Hour of Joy). However, the toys could not leave the factory because they would not be able to live in the outside world without being treated the exact same. The Prototype ruled the factory with an iron fist, having locked away Poppy in a case and killed any and all toys who defied his rule. Very few survived the Hour, with the only known survivors being Leith Pierre, Sharon and two unnamed workers (although, it's obvious that they're also killed off, too). He, however, spared the orphans out of supposed kindness and kept them with him in the labs, albeit in a not-so-indefinite deep sleep.
Ten years later, one of the unnamed employees was given a letter, implying that their co-workers were still alive, returned to the factory, only to be trapped inside with the ravenous toys. The intruder would then free Poppy Playtime and the two would team up to defeat the experiments, kill the Prototype and destroy Playtime once and for all.
