The Poachers are the main antagonists of the 1986 Russian/Japanese animated film The Adventures of Lolo the Penguin, released in America as Scamper the Penguin.

They were voiced by the late Yuri Volyntsev, the late Vladimir Ferapontov, the late Vyacheslav Bogachev, and the late Vladimir Soshalsky.

Biography[]

After the adelie penguin chicks Lolo and Pepe are separated from their waddle when the ice they were on cracks away from the Antarctic mainland, they come across a ship and are lifted aboard by a net. At first, Lolo believes the humans will help him and Pepe get home, similar to the scientist Don did earlier in the film. However, the crew of the vessel were actually poachers, and throw the two into a cage to be sold to a zoo. The captain comes by and observes the two as they struggle to find a way out of the cage. A sailor tells the captain once reach the mainland, they can capture as many penguins as they need. The captain chuckles, claiming his intention to fill up all the cages on the ship with as many penguins as possible.

When a storm brews over, the cage's handle comes off, which allows Lolo and Pepe to escape with the help of another captive penguin, Mac the macaroni penguin. They attempt to sneak their way past the crew as they search for the escapees, but are caught when Pepe is startled by a mouse. A chase ensues with the poachers in hot pursuit of the penguin chicks. The captain manages to grab Pepe, but drops her after she bites his nose. They end up on the anchor of the ship, which the captain orders to be lifted as the poachers attempt to grab them with a net. Before they are able to do so, Jack the Saint Bernard watchdog lets out a whistle, which the poachers imply is the warning of another storm brewing, and take shelter inside the ship. However, Jack feigned the warning and enables the penguins to escape by tossing them a life preserver to cling to. They are then found by a pod of whales who swim them back to the mainland, where they are finally reunited with the waddle and their parents.

However, the poachers eventually reach the mainland and kidnap the chicks of the waddle, which the adult penguins are led by Lolo's father Toto to rescue the children. Seeing the charging parents, the poachers equip their rifles and open fire on the group, resulting in many penguin casualties. During the massacre, blasts from the guns trigger a massive chunk of ice to fall into the sea, creating a tsunami that capsizes the ship, killing the poachers while freeing the penguin chicks in the process. However, one of the penguins killed in the massacre was Toto, with Lolo being chosen as the new leader of the waddle.
