Poison Ivy is the deuteragonist of DC Universe's adult animated series Harley Quinn and a minor character in Season 1 of its 2024 spin-off series, Kite-Man: Hell Yeah!.
She is a meta-human eco-terrorist and Harley Quinn's best friend and lover, and one of the two archenemies (alongside Superman) of Lex Luthor.
Ivy was originally an introverted, fervent misanthrope until Harley helped her change for the better. She later supports Harley in her goal of stepping out of the Joker's shadow and becoming an independent supervillain, and has a talking man-eating plant named Frank as a roommate.
She is voiced by Lake Bell, who also voiced Vanessa Fisk in Spider-Man: Into The Spider Verse.
Appearance[]
Poison Ivy is a tall and slender young woman with a hourglass figure and green skin, green eyes and green lips — all of her outfits also heavily favor green. She has long red hair and styles part of her hair on the left side, almost covering her eye. She usually wears a green jacket and a white shirt underneath it, with green tights and black high heels. In her pajamas, she wears a "tree hugger" shirt with green sleeves on it and green pajama pants. In Arkham, she wore an orange prison suit just like Harley.
Personality[]
Ivy has a sarcastic, bitter, misanthropic personality, although she is quite affectionate and understanding when it comes to the very few people she considers her friends. Her primary love is for nature, and focuses her criminal goals around obstructing any efforts to harm the environment or plant life. Indeed, most of her friends were plants that she brought to life, until she became friends with Harley Quinn (at the time going by her real name: Harleen Quinzel). Her strongest relationships are with Frank the Plant, Kite man and most importantly Harley herself. Due to her difficulty forming relationships, Ivy has severe abandonment issues.
Biography[]
Background[]
Early life[]
Facts regarding Ivy's childhood in this continuity was related by the Joker, who read the information from her files and used it to construct a phony version of his own past, so the information may be inaccurate due to his unreliable nature. From what can be assumed from this skewed version of her past, Ivy seems to have been born to a wealthy family as a metahuman which caused her to isolated and bullied by both her peers and parents.
Her father would even go to mock her on her birthday and made it clear he was not fond of her due to her lack of friends. Because of this isolation Ivy befriended plants, even having one as a pet, a ficus named Mr. Ferris. At some point while still a child she walked in on her father having sex with their maid, as a result her father killed her beloved pet and started to beat her.
It was after her first experience of physical abuse that she started to hate humanity as a whole. She became Poison Ivy after being betrayed by her professor and lover Jason Woodrue. Over the years it seems that Ivy got more unstable while also wanting to wipe out humanity before eventually being defeated and sent to Arkham Asylum. By the time she and Harley actually met, her misanthropic tendencies had caused her to regress to a near animalistic state.
Arkham Asylum[]
The only one who was able to reach out to her was Harley who became Ivy's first human friend. Before Dr. Harleen Quinzel ever adopted the identity of Harley Quinn, Ivy initially rejected her attempts to show compassion, spitting in her face when the two first met. The second time, (when Quinzell was helping Batman find a bomb the Joker had hidden in the facility) she asked her about a group therapy session she had with the Joker. Ivy told her the only way the Joker could be dealt with was to kill him, even if doing so caused the bomb to go off - Ivy clearly did not care even about her own life by now.
A turning point came when the Joker attempted to escape Arkham, taking both Harley and Ivy with him to use as human shields. However, Harvey Dent (not yet the villainous Two-Face) ordered his men to open fire without regard for Harley, confident such an act would gain him votes in his reelection campaign. Seeing Harleen clearly more concerned with Ivy than her own life, Ivy decided to raise her hands and surrender. This would officially begin their friendship and later partnership.
Harley Quinn[]
Season 1[]
For a long time Ivy tried to talk Harley into leaving Joker and even broke her out of Arkham after she was imprisoned for a year. Eventually as Harley succeeded in leaving Joker Ivy would offer Harley advice in how to become a powerful figure in the criminal underworld.
In the episode "The Line", she starts dating Kite-Man, with their relationship developing over the course of the series, to the point where he asks her to marry him and she accepts. In the episode "Devil's Snare", the Joker murders her by shooting her with a giant harpoon, though she is resurrected by the following episode via the renewing power of nature.
Season 2[]
Various circumstances through the series lead to Ivy developing feelings for Harley. In the episode "There's No Place to Go But Down", Ivy and Harley share their first kiss, though the former plays it off as excitement from escaping Bane in a near-death situation while the latter secretly develops feelings for her.
Over the course of the following episodes, they end up having sex twice during Ivy's bachelorette party, but Ivy chooses to stay with Kite Man. While preparing for the wedding however, Doctor Psycho uses his psionic powers to brainwash her so he force her to kill Harley. However, she kisses Ivy a second time, distracting Psycho long enough to break his hold over her and allow Harley to give Ivy an anti-mind control device created by Kite Man and Sy Borgman.
Though Ivy and Harley defeat Psycho, he retaliates by showing the memory Ivy had of her and Harley having sex to everyone in Gotham, including a shocked Kite Man. In the season two finale, "The Runaway Bridesmaid", Ivy reconciles with Kite Man and tries to continue on with the wedding, but after Harley saves them from the GCPD, Kite Man realizes Ivy does not reciprocate his feelings and breaks up with her. While escaping from Commissioner Gordon together, Ivy admits her feelings for Harley and they share a kiss.
Accepting her feelings for Harley, Ivy spends the third season working out their romantic relationship while reconnecting with her supervillain ways.
Season 3[]
In the sequel comic series Harley Quinn: The Animated Series: The Eat. Bang! Kill. Tour the two go on an extended sort-of-but-not-a honeymoon to work through their feelings for each other, apologize to the friends they got arrested at Ivy's wedding, and fight various heroes and villains.
Season 3 features Harley and her working out their romantic relationship with positive results until she dons her classical signature outfit made of flora as she intends to turn everyone in Gotham into plantlike zombies along with turning the entire place back into the wilderness. The both of them are shown to have different goals at the end of the season as Harley wants to join the bat family in crimefighting while she intends to work for Lex Luthor as a super villain but promise to keep in touch as a couple.

Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
Ivy is a supervillain with plant-based abilities. When she uses her powers, recurring theme music is heard.
- Toxin Immunity: Poisons and toxins have no effect on Ivy.
- Chlorokinesis: Ivy is able to manipulate and animate plants, even giving them intelligence and sapience. However, she cannot control certain mutated plants or plants created by the Queen of Fables, although in the latter case, it is not stated whether that is because they are magically created or under the control of someone else.
- Pheromones: Ivy's pheromones lets her render people unconscious or fall in love with her before transforming into trees and dying. Ivy can extract these pheromones into potions that she can dispense.
- Regeneration: As a human-plant hybrid, Poison Ivy is able to completely heal herself from even the most fatal of wounds and injuries, provided that she's been buried in fresh soil. After she was impaled through the chest with a harpoon, she was able to make a full recovery within a week.
- Divination: Through meditation, she can project her consciousness into the Green, the otherdimentional plane that is the source of all plant life, drawing both knowledge and physical power from this source. Potentially, this could enhance her powers to become equal - or even superior - to Swamp Thing but as yet lacks the mental discipline needed to do so.
Abilities[]
- Gifted Intelligence: Ivy is exceptionally gifted academically, allowing her to have multiple Ph.D.'s for Botany, Chemistry, and Toxicology.
- Master Biochemist: Harley has described Ivy as being a "genius biochemist," hence she was the only person who was able to synthesize a serum to save Mr. Freeze wife, Nora.
- Expert Combatant: Ivy is an accomplished fighter, having learned several techniques form Harley during their time together. As such, Ivy was able to easily take down several goons while escaping from Riddler.

Trivia[]
- Unlike most versions of Poison Ivy, this incarnation of Poison Ivy does not seduce others to do her bidding or further her goal, rather she tends to just kill them with her power over plants. She does, however, use a "love potion", although she dislikes using that term to describe it.
- Likewise, this is the first incarnation of Poison Ivy whose sexual relationship with Harley Quinn is much more explicit, to the point of being the two depicted in bed.
- This version of Poison Ivy seems to have been born with her powers and not gained them later in life evidenced by her childhood memories.
- The writers say the reason Ivy and Harley work as a couple is that "they just get each other". Even Harley screes something up between or for them, Ivy knows its because Harley is just trying her best without thinking far ahead.
