Polyphemus is a minor antagonist within the 2025 roguelike video game Hades II. Once living on the isle of Cyclops, he was tricked by Odysseus and blinded by him. Bitter after Odysseus evaded him, he relocated to Ephyra where Chronos offered him a position as the guardian of Ephyra.

He eats anybody attempting to enter or escape Ephyra, and is the arch nemesis of Odysseus and one of several foes that Melinoe has to face as she continues her crusade against Chronos and Typhon.

Biography[]

Past[]

Polyphemus was a shepherd who lived on an island with other Cyclopes. When Odysseus and his crew landed in his island after the end of the Trojan War, they became his prisoners in his cave. When Polyphemus ate some of Odysseus' crewmen, Odysseus blinded Polyphemus with a sharp stick when the latter was drunk and he escaped. After that the Cyclops would stop actively seeking human prey.

At some point the sea god Poseidon would convince Polyphemus that he was his father as a prank and would make Odysseus' Journey back home extra difficult to back that up. When the deception was revealed Polyphemus was revealed to not be related to any of the Olympian gods.

Hades 2[]

When Melinoe unlocks the surface route, she is poisoned due to the curse on her family lineage which dictates that she cannot stay for long due to her being trapped within the underworld. The fates permit her to use the incantation to use the curse, and within, the weavings beg Melinoe to help them as they are hidden in an unknown location on the surface. After she progresses through the city of Ephyra, she stumbles upon a strange cabin with sheep, where a strange and deep voice demands to know why she is here. Turns out Polyphemus has allied with Chronos and has moved to the City of Ephyra, after the army of the Titan drove out all the human inhabitants and he is now blocking the way to Olympus to Melinoë.

Abilities[]

  • Superhuman strength: As a Cyclops, he is a giant in size which adds to his physical strength. His club can make the earth shake and can cause great damage to even a goddess like Melinoë. However his strength is no match for Heracles' strength as he himself admits.
  • Superhuman stamina: Polyphemus is extremely durable as he merely falls asleep when he is knocked out by Melinoë and doesn't seem to suffer any long term injuries after battle.

Trivia[]

  • In Greek mythology, Polyphemus was the son of Poseidon. In the game Poseidon simply played a prank on Polyphemus to make him believe he was his father for a quick laugh and feels insulted when people actually believe a god of his caliber could ever sire such a monstrous spawn. Every resemblance they have is played up on Polyphemus part.
