Pontimus is a minor antagonist in the 2023 action-adventure film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth and final installment of the Indiana Jones film series.
He is a Roman soldier who, in 212 BBC, leads his troops during the Siege of Syracuse, during which the Roman Empire took over the Island of Syracuse from the Greeks, claiming several Syracusean lives, like that of the Greek mathematician Archimedes. However, thanks to a time loop enabled by the Antikythera Mechanism, Pontimus and his men come across time-travelers from 1969, among them the American archaeologist Indiana Jones and Dr. Jürgen Voller.
He was portrayed by Mark Killeen, who also played Mero in Game of Thrones.
Biography[]
Pontimus is a Roman soldier who forms part of the Roman army by 212 BBC. That year, Pontimus sails with his troops to the Island of Syracuse, Sicily, where the Greek mathematician Archimedes lives, as the Roman Empire is dead set on conquering the island to expand on their territories.
As a result of a time loop enabled by the Antikythera Mechanism designed by Archimedes, who foresaw that a Roman victory was inevitable unless he could somehow bring help from the future, Pontimus witnessed how the Neo-Nazi plane from Dr. Jürgen Voller entering through a time fissure from 1969, flying towards Syracuse. Suspecting that the metallic machine was a dragon, Pontimus and his men started shooting their ballestas at the plane. Despite Klaber's attempts at neutralizing the Romans, Pontimus and his crew prevailed and the plane ended up crashing, killing Voller, Klaber and all the Neo-Nazis aboard, as Pontimus and his crew arrived on Syracuse's beach, while permitting Archimedes and his aide to conclude that the Antikythera had served its purpose.
Having witnessed how the American archaeologist Indiana Jones and his friend Helena Shaw had parachuted from the plane to safety, Pontimus tracked the two adventurers to the Syracusan field where they had landed. There, as Helena checked on that Jones was right, Pontimus prepared to kill them, but Archimedes and his aide came to their rescue, with the latter shooting an arrow at Pontimus, killing him. Despite his death, however, it's likely that Pontimus' men kept attacking until they took over the island and killed Archimedes, as Jones and his friends didn't find any notable changes to history once they returned to their time.
Trivia[]
- By virtue of going after Indiana Jones and Helena Shaw right after Jürgen Voller's death, Pontimus becomes the last villain to die in the franchise.
