Pope hurt apes. Makes apes slaves. Pope like humans.
~ Koba on Pope.
Pope real leader. Protect many, hurt few. Caesar makes apes afraid. Pope makes apes strong.
~ Pope on his rogue leadership.

Pope is the main antagonist of the Dawn of the Planet of The Apes prequel comic book. Pope is one of the commanders of Caesar's army, and the most brutal one. After being called out by Caesar for being too reckless, Pope forms a rogue tribe with the intent of taking over Caesar's rule over the colony and establishing an "strong" ape society.

Biography[]

Pope is first seen when he is training one of his fellow apes. During his training, Pope forcefully pulls one of his soldiers off a tree, in a violent tantrum. Caesar calls him out for this, and because of this reckless behavior, he sends him away in a special mission in San Francisco, where he could get supplies with his search party. It is then that Pope starts showing signs of being more than just a reckless commander.

During this mission, Pope spots a house with his two other fellow apes, Fifer and Cora, and he tells them to get supplies in there and for some reason, find some humans. During their search, two humans find them and start threatening them both, prompting Pope to attack them. Pope attacks and kills the armed human violently, and then orders Fifer to kill the other one, Fifer at first refuses, but Pope starts threatening him and ordering him to do it, disobeying Caesar's orders. Fifer would succeed in doing the deed but is emotionally disturbed by it.

When Fifer and Cora come across a zoo full of primal apes, not evolved like the rest, Pope and the rest of the troops come down to attack the group of apes and their alpha leader, however, he begrudgingly retreated due to Fifer's wounds in need of treatment though states to the alpha that it's not over yet. He and his fellow apes would come up with a strategic approach to what to do with the zoo's apes, Pope states on capturing them, which to Cora protesting against the idea, though the former counters by saying Caesar doesn't care about the apes' safety but rather making a world similar to the humans, and would finalize on saying their target is not to beat all the apes but the alpha himself. By the time he challenges the alpha in person, they each broke their staffs to have a proper challenge in combat, only for Pope to use the tip to kill the alpha instead and take over the zoo.

He would begin treating the captured apes as slaves and encouraged his troops to "break them" accordingly, intending to mold them into being part of his army. Fifer protests against this, though Pope claims that the apes here are nothing more than "dumb animals" and soon reveals his true intentions of killing Caesar, overthrowing him in his place, and taking full control over the colony. As soon as Fifer escaped to warn Caesar, he was seen training and molding the captive apes while soon torturing Cora in a cold water puddle just to get her to talk, when that failed, he would then have her eaten alive by a starving polar bear afterward.

He's then seen having a conversation with his right-hand soldier, Rex, regarding if Caesar will ever fight back, which Pope doubted, before noticing an ape about to touch him, much to his anger, and held its throat, lashing out at it to never touch him. He and Rex are then seen at a fireplace where his scouts discovered a colony full of human survivors, he schemed to take over the colony for his own and then kill Caesar. He and his troops would eventually succeed in doing so, not only imprisoning the apes but also the humans there too, which only then would he and his soldiers make preparations to wage a war against Caesar and the colony. However, he and his troops were confronted by Koba and his fellow compadres, calling him out on his treatment of fellow apes no better than the humans, which he continuously provoked him by saying they are "dumb animals" and various taunts about how he thinks Koba is nothing but a tool to Caesar.

As the fight broke out, Pope and Koba's battle led to a lion's cage where he still taunted the latter before giving enough time for Rex to ambush Koba by thrusting his spear to his shoulder, wounding him. He then has Rex strangle a leashed ape out of spite just to give Koba a message to Caesar personally all while provoking him even further, which snapped Koba enough to kill them both as Pope dies having his neck slitted off.

Personality[]

Pope is a cruel, devious, tyrannical, and extremely hypocritical ape. He is very sadistic, as he enjoys killing humans and abusing others. A prime example of his sadism and ruthlessness is when he tortures and then kills a dissenting female ape by forcing her to stand in a freezing puddle and then feeding alive to a polar bear.

Pope resembles in part, what Koba would become, a delusional and sadistic ape who does not care about his species at all, but more with what he thinks is best. However, he is arguably even worse than Koba, as he outright enslaves apes he deems inferior, and abuses and kills those who defy him, or simply annoy him, in much slower and more painful ways than Koba ever did.

Trivia[]

  • After Pope is revealed as a traitor, Koba shows complete disgust towards his treatment of his fellow apes, comparing him to humans. Even so, Koba became a spitting image of what Pope was in the actual movie.
