This villain was proposed but was rejected by the community for not being heinous enough or lacks what is necessary to be a Pure Evil villain. Therefore, this villain shall be added to our "Never Again List", where proposed villains rejected by the community shall be placed to prevent future proposals of the same evil-doer. They can be proposed again (with the permission of an administrator) if new elements appear in their series that can change their status as non-PE villains.

Any act of adding this villain to the Pure Evil category without a proposal or creating a proposal for this villain without the permission of an administrator will result in a ban.

Masedra, the Pope of Rolance, was a minor antagonist in the anime Tales of Zestiria: The X. He was very loosely adapted from a non-villainous character of the same name appearing in the video game Tales of Zestiria.

He was voiced by Toshitaka Hirano in the Japanese version, and by Francis Henry in the English version.

History[]

Masedra was the Pope of Rolance, based in the Pendrago Cathedral, which Shepherd Sorey had sensed to be the source of the city’s Malevolence infestation. When Sorey, Rose, Emperor Dolan, and an assortment of Platinum and Blue Strike Knights arrived at the cathedral, the Pope greeted them, but quickly inquired as to their business, looking afraid.

The Pope then tried to shift the group away from the cathedral, begging them not to enter. Frustrated, the wind seraph Dezel blasted open the cathedral doors, and followed the Malevolence trail to an out-chamber, inside which was a dead dragon, releasing vast quantities of Malevolence into its surroundings.

To purify the dragon, Sorey entered a squire pact with Rose, giving her some of his abilities, and the pair began to purify the dragon, albeit with a great deal of difficulty, and while being attacked by Malevolence-infected parts of the dragon’s soul. Mikleo, Edna, Lailah, and Dezel fought the soul parts, allowing Sorey and Rose to continue to purify the beast, eventually succeeding, with a blue light being released by the dragon’s body as it was purified.

After Masedra’s dragon had been purified, it was left unclear what was done with the Pope or why/if he had deliberately kept such a source of evil in the center of the city to corrupt it.

Trivia[]

  • Masedra is the second antagonist in Tales of Zestiria: The X to be a clergyman; the first was Gasparo Reno. Both characters served as minor villains with single-episode story arcs, and both belonged to the church in Rolance.
  • In the game, Masedra appears as a much different character who is not a villain. Masedra is one of several characters whose moral alignment is changed in the anime, with Maltran undergoing the change from villain in the game to hero in the anime, and Lunarre being adapted from a chaotic villain into an honorable and eventually redeemed anti-villain.
  • The age spots on Masedra's face in the anime are not present on his game incarnation.
