Poseidon is a major antagonist in the manga/anime series Record of Ragnarok.
He is the main antagonist of the Third Round, a minor antagonist in the Fourth Round and the Sixth Round, the overarching antagonist of the Seventh Round and a minor antagonist of the Ninth Round of the Ragnarok Tournament.
Poseidon is the ruler of seas and a member of the Twelve Gods of Olympus as well as the brother of Zeus, Hades and Adamas and the third son of Kronos. He is also the Gods' representative of the Gods Fighters during the Third Round, where he faces Kojiro Sasaki as the Humans' representative of the Einherjar.
He is voiced by Takahiro Sakurai, who has also voiced Suguru Geto/Kenjaku in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and Jujutsu Kaisen, Griffith in Berserk, Sasori in Naruto, Patolli in Black Clover, Shōgo Makishima in Psycho-Pass, Uta in Tokyo Ghoul, Suzaku Kururugi in Code Geass and Ai in Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS, in the Japanese dubbed version of the anime adaptation. He is voiced by Bumper Robinson in the English dub.
Appearance[]
Poseidon is a tall, muscular man with an apathetic face devoid of any emotion, with blond hair, blue irises and black pupils. He wears an ornate gold choker and dark blue clothing with a gold border that covers the entire upper half of his body, showing his abdomen and chest. Around his biceps he wears a pair of gold rings.
He wears a pair of seaweed fingerless gloves, with a blue band at the wrists, and around his waist he wears a white waistcoat with a gold circular motif, which splits in front with a single cloth that descends like a loincloth. Under his waistcoat he has a pair of baggy trousers that match the fabric of his arms, tucked into a pair of seaweed-colored boots with designs similar to those of ancient ruins in the depths of the ocean. He carries a highly stylized trident as long as his body.
Personality[]
Poseidon is a fearsome, haughty and cold-hearted individual. Like many other Gods, Poseidon despises Humanity and regards them as nothing but filth. He is very taciturn, arrogant and considers himself perfect, saying he doesn't need supporters, even calling the other Gods "useless scum", insulting his older brother Adamas and Kojiro Sasaki, cursing the latter bitterly just before he died.
Hades considers Poseidon to be the person most worthy of the title of "King" of all the Gods. Despite his cold exterior, Poseidon does possess some emotion, especially when it comes to his siblings: although he inflicted a mortal wound on him, Poseidon chose to let Adamas live and was unconcerned when he was recovered by Hermes and Hades, was healed by Beelzebub and continued to live under a different name in Helheim, choosing not to kill him again.
Poseidon seems to care deeply for his older brother Hades, to the point of smiling and calling him "Brother", which he has never done before, after he defeats the Titans. He also showed concern for Hades when he learned that his brother had gone to Helheim alone to face the Titans, and chooses to forgo killing Adamas to prevent Hades from being displeased about it. On the contrary, he never paid attention to Adamas throughout his life even though the latter only wanted his attention.
Biography[]
Poseidon was born as the third of four sons of Kronos, the Titan who ruled the Universe, anche the brother of Hades, Adamas and Zeus. Throughout his life, Poseidon ignores Adamas without ever looking him in the eye, despite the latter even explicitly asking him to do so and bursting into tears because Poseidon always ignores him. When Zeus creates his final form, Adamas, he names it this way in honor of his brother Adamas, since Poseidon, seeing him in that form, accidentally mistook him for Adamas.
After Zeus kills his father Kronos and becomes ruler of the Gods, the Primordial Goddess Gaia opposes this decision and unleashes against the Greek Gods the Giants, starting the Gigantomachy. Poseidon fights in the Gigantomachy together with his family, and after the victory over the Giants in Valhalla he learns that Hades went alone in Helheim to face the Titans servants of Kronos, freed from the Tartarus. Poseidon joins him to help him, but discovers that Hades has managed to defeat them all by himself and, while telling him that he would not thank him, Poseidon calls him "Brother" for the first time. Probably following this event, Poseidon becomes the King of the Seas and Proteus becomes his faithful servant.
Some time later Adamas, not accepting that Zeus is the head of the Gods despite being his younger brother, organizes a coup against him and asks Poseidon to help him, but he accuses him of having violated all the rules that make a God perfect and mortally wounds him, deciding to erase him from history: from that moment the Gods of Olympus went down from thirteen to twelve.
However, Poseidon still leaves Adamas alive and allows Hermes and Hades to retrieve him and take him to Beelzebub, who saves his life and transforms into a Cyborg, prompting him to stay in Helheim under a different name chosen by Hades: Adamantine. When Hermes, at Beelzebub's request, goes to warn Poseidon that Adamas is still alive and asks him if he still intends to kill him, Poseidon explains that he will not do it because, if Adamas died, Hades would be upset.
Poseidon participates in the Gods' Council of the 2000 B.C., in which the Gods decide to spare Humanity, but still deal them a punishment.
Millennia later, following the proclamation of the Ragnarok Tournament, Poseidon is chosen by Zeus as one of the Gods Fighters who would represent the Gods during the competition. Poseidon fights in the Third Round, representing the Gods, against Kojiro Sasaki, representing Humans. Poseidon underestimates his opponent, and for this he ends up being defeated and killed by Kojiro Sasaki.
Powers and Abilities[]
Divine Physiology: As a God, Poseidon possesses physical abilities far beyond those of any ordinary Human and his body cannot be harmed by deadly weapons. However, he can be injured and killed by physical attacks with superhuman strength or by Divine Weapons.
Divine Abilities: Poseidon is considered the most fearsome of the Gods, so much so that even the other Gods are afraid to anger him. He effortlessly defeated and mortally wounded the God of Conquest and his older brother, Adamas, with a single blow. He is one of the sons of Kronos, has complete control over the ocean, and is powerful enough to be compared to his brother Zeus. Poseidon possesses phenomenal physical strength, as each of his attacks was capable of killing Kojiro Sasaki. Poseidon was able to snap Kojiro's Divine Weapon in two effortlessly and crush his own arm.
Divine Speed and Reflexes: Poseidon showed an unfathomable speed of movement, as he effortlessly deflected and dodged all of Kojiro Sasaki's sword blows. As the battle progressed, Poseidon began to move more seriously and his speed increased, eventually overpowering Kojiro and exceeding his prediction due to the quickness of his movements. Poseidon fights mainly by slashing with his trident, which he wields with godlike skill and proficiency, being able to land dozens of blows in the blink of an eye. His trident techniques are so fast that they create afterimages. He appears to be able to materialize his weapon out of thin air.
Divine Stamina and Semi-Immortality: Poseidon possesses divine stamina and enormous pain tolerance, to the point of remaining calm and unperturbed even after Kojiro had cut his body, continuing to fight until he was cut in four. As a God, Poseidon is unable to die of old age. It is very old, being older than the Big Bang (making it over 13 billion years old).
Hydrokinesis: As the "God of the Seas", Poseidon possesses absolute control over the water. During his entrance into the arena for the Third Round, Poseidon stamped his foot, causing the water to part and allowing him to walk into the stadium. However, it is unknown whether or not he can use this ability in combat.
