| ~ The Praya Dubia, contemplating on the ocean's eventual destruction. |
The Praya Dubia, also known as the Spiral or the Ocean's Agony, is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Roland) of the 2024 video game Another Crab's Treasure.
It is an immensely powerful god-like entity that resides in the bottom of the Drain found in the ancient ruins of Carcinia, made up of pure negative Unami energy and the collective tormented damned souls of those that died due to pollution following the downfall of the city after king Camtscha had stolen the Perfect Whorl from the hermit crab Elders.
As a result of many years of pollution, as well as the downfall of Carcinia due to its neglectful king, the Praya Dubia had come to view the entire ocean as falling down an inevitable trajectory of mass destruction. It had become so enraged by the destruction of the entire ocean that it came to believe that it isn't worth saving. When Kril reaches the Unfathom, it attempts to manipulate him into using the Perfect Whorl to destroy the ocean.
It was voiced by Eddy Yeung.
Apppearance[]
The Praya Dubia is essentialy a giant hive-mind consisting of those that were either affected by the pollution or died as a result. As implied by its name, its source is a Praya Dubia with a luminescent blue body, consisting of a bulbous head and a very long stem-like body with smaller yellow bulbs attatched to it. Said stem-like body appears to be so long that the Praya Dubia has to be constantly moving around in a circular motion just to fit its body in the chambers. As a result of this, a whirlpool, dubbed as the "Spiral", is visible from outside of the palace of King Camtscha and sucks in those that have succumbed to its influence,.
All of the creatures that are affected the Praya Dubia's influence, a result of their anger over the ocean's pollution, appear as more realistic sea-life, as opposed to the cartoony characters found in most of the cast, and often have blacked or glowing violet eyes. Additionally, their dialogue is represented in the subtitles with a sort of greenish brown font similar to when the NPCs talk about the Gunk, indicating that they themselves have been affected by the Praya Dubia's powers.
Personality[]
The Praya Dubia, and all of those that it affects are described as being a "cruel, unfeeling force". Supporting this is how it will do everything in its power to destroy the entire ocean, believing that there is no hope to save it. When Kril gets dejected after Firth berated him, it reveals itself to be a cold, ominous presence that rants about the untenably horrific state of the ocean, and the Earth at large. All other creatures that get affected by their anger in a similar fashion also say similar things, proclaiming that the things that they once held dear are "transient".
Biography[]
Past[]
A long time ago, the hermit crab elders had created a mythical artificat, the Perfect Whorl, which was created in order to maintain the ocean's balance. It doubled as a piece of armor that would grant those that wear it the ability to control the currents of the ocean, essentially making it the ultimate Umami conduit. About 30 years prior to the events of the game, Camtscha, the greedy and tyranical king of the old Carinia, had stolen the whorl from the hermit crabs that created it, worried that his reign over the city would end soon due to their power.
After he stole the Whorl, he exiled all hermit crabs from the city, and ordered for all of their artifacts, except for the Whorl, to be destroyed and discarded, believing that he could become all-powerful through the power of the Whorl. Camtscha would then hide this artifact at the bottom of the Drain, which could only be accessed through his throne, though he couldn't use the Whorl, as its power was relegated only to hermit crabs.
For the following years, the king became far more neglectful of his own city, leading to its decay when it became polluted with bleach and soap, killing the vast majority of those that once inhabited it. The rest of its civilians were forced to move out and create a newer Carcinia with the hopes of not repeating the same mistakes.
Following this, the souls of all of those that died at Camtscha's hands, combined with the power of the Whorl that he stole, would become enraged following the potential downfall of the newer Carcinia when Duchess Magista replaces the ocean's currency with microplastics. This would lead to the creation of a slurry of all of the tormented souls and the Whorl's bad Umami energy, leading to the events of the game.
Another Crab's Treasure[]
The Praya Dubia isn't seen throughout the majority of the game, though its voice can be ocassionally heard talking to Kril when he reaches the Unfathom, tempting him to destroy the ocean like all of the other creatures it had affected, whom serve as the enemies and bosses of the game. Additionally, other characters that become affected by the Praya Dubia's influence, a result of their upset over the ocean's pollution, will try to kill him, and speak in very ominous tones when they talk of being "sinners".
The first hint at its existence occurs when Kril comes across a group of crabs as he tries to retrieve his shell from the Loan Shark. He notes the crabs' eery behavior, their unnerving appearances, and their seemingly homicidal tendencies. He becomes so concerned of this that he tries to inform Duchess Magista, who had replaced all of the currency in the area with microplastics, but she promptly ignores Kril's warnings.
When Kril fights Duchess Magista following the apparant destruction of her castle, she is speaking about how her mind and those of her subjects have become clear, stating that her beauty and kingdom are "transient" and "sinful" things that must be torn down. She also tries to kill Kril when she declares that his life will wash away as well. As she's doing this, she is also vomiting up a sort of black sludge, indicating that she had been affected by the Gunk, too.
When Kril and his crew fall down the Mouth of the Drain after beating Roland, lamenting that the event may be his fault, he hears a mysterious voice telling him that he must fight if he doesn't want to become prey. After Kril gets berated by Firth, this only lowers his spirits even more as he continues to hear to voice. When Kril finally admits that he doesn't care for fighting anyone, the Praya Dubia summons a set of sand mites to pummel him, before Nemma saves him and Kril recovers afterwards.
Kril hears the voice on two other occasions, the first of which being after he awakens and comes across a sort of winding light with a purple head, which is seem in multitudes across the depths. Here it explains that Kril had seen the fracturing of the ocean, and how little he understands the upcoming apocalypses. Kril comes across a similar phenomenon when he reaches the old Carcinia, where it explains how each and every "sinner" eventually reaches the center of the spiral, the "bottom of the Drain".
Eventually, Kril reunites with both Roland and Inkerton, and whitnesses the latter shooting the former in the head with a gun. Inkerton also appears to have been affected by the Praya Dubia, as he goes on about he and Kril are both "sinners".
Kril and Konche finally encounter the Praya Dubia when they reach the bottom of the Drain, accessed through Camtscha's throne. The chamber itself is filled to the brim with the skeletons of deceased crabs, indicating that the Praya Dubia is indeed made up of the souls of Carcinia's former residence. When Kril and Konche get there, Konche is killed by a possessed Chitan, who got possessed as a result of her anger, which the being used as a vessel.
Upon being defeated, in a last ditch effort to kill Kril, the Praya Dubia self-destructs, all the while screaming in agony from all of the pollution that the past and presents civilizations have caused to the ocean before finally exploding. Though the Praya Dubia's ultimate faith is left uncertain, it still appears to have had a great effect on the ocean at large, with Kril even being concerned of the possibility of the entirety of New Carcinia getting gunked after Firth proceeds in breaking apart the trash island with the Perfect Whorl. The ending cutscenes also show Kril protecting civilians by defeating some Gunk-infested creatures.

Trivia[]
- This entity was based on a real-life underwater multi-organism, the giant siphonophore, whose scientific name is Praya Dubia, and is a relative of the Portuguese Man-O-War, having many poisonous stinger-like appendages. The length of this organism is said to even rival that of the blue whale, as some have been reported to grow up to 50 meters in length.
- The Praya Dubia was created as a symbolic representation of the collective complacency that comes from the undirected anger towards society's issues, being a god-like creature that stews in its own misery, whilst allowing society as a whole fall apart at its whim, speeding up the progress by telling various sea-life to destroy it.
