The Preppies, or Preps shortly, are major antagonists in the 2006 action-adventure video game Bully.
They are aristocratic clique of wealthy, arrogant, and snobbish young elitists who maintain a strict social hierarchy. They look down on anyone they consider to be below their class, often using their inherited wealth and family name as a basis for their superiority. Their personality is often a reflection of their privileged upbringing, with many of them exhibiting deep-seated insecurities and parental issues. This can manifest in a need to bully those they perceive as weaker or to engage in reckless behavior. They employ their wealth and social standing as their primary weapons, using condescending behavior, social exclusion, and sabotage to assert their dominance and control over other cliques and non-clique students. They are easily recognizable by their expensive "Aquaberry" attire, which further reinforces their exclusive and entitled status within the academy.
They occupy the third position in the clique hierarchy order, ranking above the Nerds and Bullies, and serve as the arch-rivals of the Greasers.
Biography[]
Overview[]
Preppies are students who come from rich families, most of them are Old Money. They are very well-dressed, can be identified by their Aquaberry vests, the clothing brand that Derby Harrington's family owns stock. Besides being rich, they are also heavily arrogant elitists, considering themselves as the highest, and have a sworn rivalry with the Greasers for this reason. In an attempt to show their supposed superiority, many of them speak in pretentious accents like Transatlantic and faux upper-class English.
Preppies families have a long history of inbreeding, and as a result tend to have physical and mental deformities, which is became a running joke throughout the game. The main example being Tad, who has webbed toes and an older brother who has no chin and is enrolled in the Happy Volts Asylum, as a result of being inbred. Derby is also betrothed to Pinky despite the fact they are cousins and Pinky mentions that arranged marriages were between brother and sister until it was made illegal.
Preppies mainly hang out in the Harrington House, which is owned by their leader Derby. Outside of campus they can be found around Old Bullworth Vale, and at the Boxing Gym for being interested in boxing.
Story[]
They do not appear in the main storyline until Chapter 2. They befriend Jimmy after he wins a boxing event and therefore earns the Beach House. Pinky takes a special interest in Jimmy after being rejected by Derby. Gary, on the other hand, spread rumors to them about Jimmy making comments about Tad's family, causing the Preps to turn on Jimmy and take his bike trophy after defeating them in a bike race, which he reclaims with the help of Ricky. They continue their campaign against him, but they are defeated by him in a boxing match, followed by a battle between Jimmy and Derby.
The Preppies subsequently assist Jimmy in his struggle with the Greasers. The Preppies remain loyal to Jimmy until Gary persuades them (and the other school cliques, with the exception of the Bullies) to rebel against him. They continue to despise Jimmy, even after he assists them in determining who stole their trophies, but eventually become Jimmy's buddies again once he defeats Derby in a battle.
