If the road to oblivion is paved with good intentions, then Alan is about to build a freeway.
~ Gumball after discovering Alan's manifesto.
Once elected, I will purge the school of its worst problem—namely, sadness—by forcibly sending sad people to happy camps. We will select those people who need a smile on their face, and we will fix 'em. Inside our facility, they will be exposed to only joyful thoughts. We will monitor their progress with round-the-clock CCTV, and they will partake in happy, healthy activities. We will continue the process until every person in Elmore Junior High bears a warm smile on their face. Anyone who strays from the path of true happiness will be… corrected. My vision is for there to be a happy camp in every town, state and country across the world.
~ President Alan Keane's vision.

President Alan Keane is the main antagonist of the The Amazing World of Gumball episode "The Vision."

He is the evil alter-ego of the ordinarily heroic Alan Keane, whose goal is to eradicate sadness across the globe by imprisoning depressed individuals in "happy camps." His plan first takes root after convincing the students to elect him president of Elmore Jr. High.

He was voiced by Alex Jordan, who also voices the Van Shopkeeper in the same series.

Appearance[]

He is a teal balloon with a cold, marker-drawn expression, who wears glasses and has a line of stitches across his face and through his right eye.

Personality[]

People are a lot like pawns in a chess game, and you need to know how to influence them.
~ President Alan's mindset.

He is a charismatic, intelligent, strategic, and manipulative individual who is capable of garnering public support from Elmore Jr. High's student body through his words. He speaks with a suave, deep, sophisticated, Machiavellian demeanor and southern accent. He also monologues his plan throughout the episode, describing to the audience the best ways in which he can achieve his goal and take advantage of people.

Although he wishes to eradicate sadness worldwide, his methods of achieving this goal reveal that he is a sinister individual, as he conspires to indoctrinate sad individuals in prison-like facilities where they will be force-fed happy thoughts.

Biography[]

Conception[]

When Gumball and Darwin Watterson accidentally take the real Alan Keane's gym bag, they notice it contains only a USB stick and a string. Plugging in the USB, they discover a document titled "My Vision," described as "a manifesto on how [he] will purge Elmore Jr. High of its greatest problem." Reading the text, Gumball and Darwin begin imagining its implications in the form of Alan conspiring to manipulate and oppress Elmore Jr. High's student population—plainly, it just states his intention to become school president.

Plan in Action[]

Alan deduces that he needs to change his appearance and voice, as the more serious a leader looks, the more seriously he will be taken. He cycles through various faces and voice options to land on the most ominous. Then, he wins a game of chess against one of the Eggheads to develop his "strategic mind," noting how the students are like pawns in a game.

Out in the schoolyard, Alan begins talking to Clayton, who insists that he would make a great school president and that he should apply. He tricks Teri into believing that it was her idea to have Alan apply by subtly having Clayton say so behind her, with Teri then spreading the word across the school. Each person she influences then begins taking credit for the idea and spreading it even more, creating a chain reaction.

Alan then feigns the existence of a "Grade Tax" at the school using a poster, arguing that nothing motivates people to take action more than a crisis. The tax poses that students with higher grades will have their grades taxed to provide to those with lower grades. Gumball sees this and begins a riot at the school, with all of the other students starting to set fire to and destroy the school.

Alan, responding to the tension, runs as a candidate for president to convince the student body to vote for him, and during a charismatic speech, he claims that the people have awoken in light of the riot. He asserts that he is there to bring change to the establishment, which, if he does not deliver, he faux-humbly declares he can be struck down. The crowd then cheers for him, thus indicating his plan is boosting his popularity.

Alan begins spreading propaganda around the school in the form of posters with slanderous slogans, influencing people not to vote for opposing candidates like Banana Joe or Leslie. Then, he declares his intention to rid the school of its "worst problem"—sadness—doing so by forcibly sending sad people into "happy" detainment camps. He claims he will select those who need a smile and put them in the facility, in which they are exposed to only joyful thoughts and activities, and their progress will be monitored with round-the-clock CCTV. He states that it's his goal for there to be a happy camp in every town, state, and country across the globe. It is implied that the envisioned Alan succeeds in his mission of taking over the world.

Assassination[]

Gumball and Darwin are provoked after reading the document. They spend the rest of the episode devising plans and attempting to assassinate the real Alan Keane, misinterpreting the manifesto for the malevolent plan described above. They end up failing and then abandoning the mission, after which Alan explains that he just wants to become president to offer sad students a chance to go to the optional "Lake Camp" at weekends, a much less alarming plan.

However, Alan takes a liking to Gumball and Darwin's initial suspicion, and as they walk out of the room, he plans to rewrite his vision in accordance with it. Gumball then comes back and pops Alan, as he heard this, having never left the room.

Quotes[]

The more serious a leader looks, the more seriously he will be taken.
~ Alan when changing his face.
What? Little old me? But I'm just a simple country boy from the sticks. Now, what would I know about them there politics?
~ President Alan to Clayton when suggested with the idea to run as a candidate.
Nothing brings about change more quickly than a crisis.
~ Alan before feigning the "Grade Tax" and causing a riot.
The people have awoken. We must all stand together. Let me be your voice and tell those in charge that we have had enough. Let us think for one moment and realize it is time for change. We must march forward, look to the future, and see that the time for celebration is now. And if I don't deliver that for you, you may strike me down! Vote for me.
~ Alan during his speech.
