Don't even think about telling someone 'He took my money' or 'He called me a little brat'! Capiche!?
~ Tanaka giving a heads-up to the protagonist.
But, no matter how attractive she was, I was repulsed by her dedication to charity work.
~ Tanaka reveals his relationship with charity.

President Tanaka is a supporting character in the Persona series.

Tananaka is a recognized, successful, and clever businessman who will do anything to achieve his goals. And while he does some shady things, Tanaka isn't completely villainous and is more of a morally ambiguous character who can help out the player, as long as it benefits him however.

He is voiced by Patrick Seitz.

Appearance[]

Tanaka is a middle-aged man with light black hair and gray eyes. He wears a suit and a dark red tie.

Personality[]

Tanaka is a charismatic yet morally ambiguous businessman driven by a relentless pursuit of profit. He’s cunning, persuasive, and unafraid to use manipulation or deception to get what he wants. Beneath his flashy persona lies a deep insecurity rooted in a difficult childhood marked by poverty and rejection. Despite his initial selfishness, he gradually reveals a capacity for growth and empathy through his bond with the protagonist.

Ultimately, Tanaka is a complex figure who learns to balance ambition with a newfound sense of purpose and integrity.

Biography[]

Persona 3[]

Social Link[]

If the protagonist's Charm is high enough, Tanaka approaches them with an offer to model for his products. However, this turns out to be a scam of his, and the protagonist is swindled out of a large sum of money. Upon realizing that the protagonist is unaware of the deception, Tanaka takes an unexpected interest and decides to mentor them in business, initiating the Devil Arcana Social Link.

Driven by a love for money and a disregard for ethics, Tanaka teaches the protagonist manipulative sales tactics. His paranoia about public backlash and carefully curated persona are the results of years in the media spotlight. Through his bond with the protagonist, Tanaka gradually develops a sense of morality, moving beyond shallow greed or blind charity and forming a genuine loyalty.

Later, Tanaka gets contacted by a colleague devoted to charity work. Though initially dismissive, he comes to understand that his true passion lies not in wealth, but in empowering others. By the end of the Social Link, he donates a large sum to an orphanage, calling it an "investment"—a symbolic gesture that reflects his growth and appreciation for the protagonist’s influence. He cancels the protagonist’s dubious modeling contract, telling them to seek their own happiness instead of lingering around someone like him. As a parting gift, he gives them a Thank-you Letter from the orphanage.

Persona 4[]

Tanaka returns as the host of "Tanaka's Amazing Commodities", where Yu can purchase his stuff every Sunday morning.

Persona 5[]

In the game, Tanaka operates online shopping website called "Tanaka's Shady Commodities", which allows Ren to purchase his products by ordering them online.
