Prince Egor is a character in Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids. He is the protagonist of the story, The Black Knight.

Biography[]

Egor is a resident of Draconia, and hears that King Basil, the ruler of the neighboring kingdom, Ruritania, has died without leaving a successor. The next day, Egor and his army sweep into Ruritania. Unprepared for such an onslaught, the people put up little resistance. The Black Knight and his soldiers decided to camp at the wall and storm the castle at dawn.

While searching for a retreat to construct a foolproof plan to capture Basil's castle, The Black Knight across the River Alter. Having heard about it and its magic powers, he kneels down and splashes his face with cool water when he sees his reflection. It comes to life and says tomorrow may be too late, and that he must crush his enemies tonight and kill them while they sleep in their beds. Just then, a baby pike swims under the reflection and, thinking it's a tasty meal, nibbles an ear, causing it to vanish.

Deciding the advice he got makes good sense, Egor attacks the castle that night. King Basil's followers don't stand a chance against him, and by morning, the Black Knight declares himself the new king of Ruritania.

Things take a dark turn in Ruritania as its people find themselves under a cruel and selfish king. People lose their possessions and homes, children are put to work in the services of their new king, the Prime Minister and his advisers are hurled into the dungeons to spend the rest of their lives, and singing and dancing are outlawed. The Black Knight enjoys his wealth and power. He can tell anyone what to do, and no one answers back.

Soon, however, he beings to grow bored and sets out for some excitement. He goes to the River Alter to ask his reflection for advice. His reflection says he's going soft, and unless he shows them who's boss, his people will start to tell him what to do. He must force his people to go down on their knees to him, whether by beating them, burning them, or frying them alive in boiling oil. Before it can say anything more, however, the reflection is gobbled up, armor and all, by the (now half-grown) pike.

Unfortunately, the Black Knight has heard all he needs to hear, so he decides to rule with an iron fist. He locks all the gold in the country in a room to which only he has the key. He kills all the animals and burns the crops so no one has anything to eat. He declares everyone in the country his slave and makes them worship him. He beheads anyone who questions him.

A year later, the Black Knight has become the world's most feared ruler, but as his power grows, his paranoia also grows that he might be usurped. Looking for help, he goes down to the River Alter to speak with his reflection, only to find it has disappeared. Suddenly, something stirs in the depths. The Black Knight looks closer and sees what he thinks is his reflection. However, his face looks different. It looks grotesque, twisted, and evil. Suddenly, he sees a fin break out of the water. Too late, he realizes that what he's staring at is not his reflection but the pike that swallowed it. The pike is now full grown, and with one thrust of its tale, it leaps from the water and devours the Black Knight in one gulp, returning Ruritania to normal, and allowing a lady named Gertrude to replace the Black Knight as its ruler.
