“ | Katharine! Zuhl! Jangal! Attention all troops of the Boazanian fleet! From now on, the earth will come under the rule of Prince Heinel of the Boazanian Empire! We shall spread the advanced culture of Boazan all over the earth! Kill any human who dares stop us! Eradicate them! | „ |
~ Heinel in the first episode, about his desire to conquer the Earth. |
Prince Heinel (プリンス・ハイネル) (birthday: February 2)[1] is a major antagonist of the anime series Voltes V. He is the Prince of the Boazanian Empire, the nephew and right-hand of his uncle Emperor Zu Zambajil, and the son of the disgraced crowned prince La Gohl, consequently making him the half-brother of La Gohl's three half-earthling children, Kenichi, Daijiro and Hiyoshi Goh. He is also the leader of the invasion against Earth under Zu Zambajil's orders, and the Voltes team's archenemy.
He was voiced by the late Osamu Ichikawa, who had previously voiced Great General Garuda and Warchimedes in Chōdenji Robo Combattler V and would go on to voice Richter in Tōshō Daimos.
Personality[]
Heinel is crude, violent, cunning and ruthless. However, this is all a facade he keeps to hide his feelings of inferiority and shame of being the son of a traitor. Due to being told that his father betrayed the Boazanian race, Heinel disavows him and exercises all his effort into Boazanian nationalism and leading the empire to glory, despite being reviled by the Emperor and his delegates. In episode 8, when Duke Zaki berates him and humiliates him by tossing wine on his face, Heinel later recounts to Katherine that he used to being humiliated.
While Heinel is depicted as a typical main villain who murders, destroys and blackmails others for fun and sadism in earlier episodes of the series, in later ones, he starts to show more honourable qualities, such as caring for his soldiers, giving credit for those who deserve it, and wanting to die honorably rather than live as a coward. Even in the final battle, when his side is losing, he still continues to fight the Voltes team instead of surrendering.
He clings to a great sense of pride due to being a Boazanian, combined with his high rank as the nephew of the Emperor. When Giligan informs him that Kenichi has Boazanian blood, he grows enraged and calls him a liar. This pride is shown to be fatal at times, such as him being angry at Katharine and Jangal suggesting that General Bergan was sent by his uncle to assassinate him in episode 24.
Despite his ruthlessness, he has a streak for mercy, as he forgave Bergan for trying to assassinate him and offered him a chance at being his general. However, Heinel greatly despises traitors, and when Zuhl tried to have him disposed, Heinel set up multiple schemes to have him executed, from secretly planting a bomb in his staff to ordering a firing squad to execute him, on top of burning all memories and records of him in episode 22.
Heinel is also somewhat superstitious/religious. In episode 31, he is seen performing a ritual which involves slitting the throat of a bird and pouring its blood in a cup while surrounded by fire. In episode 40, it is revealed he believes in ancient Boazanian prophecies and legends, and prays to a statue of Godol for power.
Appearance[]
Heinel has shoulder-length thick ginger hair, pale skin, brown eyes, and 2 long horns on either side of his head. He wears a dark blue mink long coat with white cuffs and frill. The inside of the coat is yellow. Heinel also wears a red bodysuit with a dark blue collar and star emblem on the chest. His pants and boots are red while his belt is white.
His hair appears ginger or blonde at different points in the anime.
Biography[]
The Planet of Boazania is split into two classes, those with horns, and those without horns. In the past, both classes lived in harmony. However, at some point in time, a caste system was introduced that stated that those with horns were allowed to form an aristocratic nobility, while those without them are forced to live as slaves. This cruel caste system would dictate Boazanian society for aeons.
Boazania was ruled by a Royal Family, which would reinforce this caste system. However, one day, the younger brother of the 123rd Emperor of Boazania, Prince Oral, had a son. The baby was born hornless. Enraged and calling the child cursed, Prince Oral attempted fillicide, while his wife, their doctor and the court messenger tried to retrain him. Oral's wife begged him to spare the child and kill her instead. Oral, who couldn't bring himself to kill his wife and child, agreed to spare them. The boy's parents, the doctor and the court messenger swore to keep the hornlessness of the boy a secret. The boy was named Gohl, and he grew up with prosthetic horns to hide his otherness.
Growing up, Gohl witnessed the cruelty the Hornless Boazanians would witness at the hands of the Horned. They were often assaulted, maltreated, made to labour and had little to no rights. Being a Hornless Boazanian himself, he felt their plight in his heart. Gohl's dream was to create a society where both Horned and Hornless Boazanians could co-exist without oppression.
Gohl discovered that he had a great talent for technology and engineering. Soon, he became the Boazanian Minister of Science and Technology. At some point, Gohl fell in love with a noblewoman named Lozaria. On their honeymoon, he revealed his secret to Lozaria - that he was hornless. Lozaria, while shocked at first, told him she loved him anyway. After they embraced, Gohl told Lozaria of his dream for an equal society.
When the 123rd Emperor of Boazania died, a succession crisis occured because his only child was mentally disabled, therefore unfit to rule. Next in line to the throne was Gohl. However, the son of the Emperor and his concubine, Zambajil, had been eyeing the throne for a long time. Before the coronation event, Zambajil's subordinates began looking for ways to incriminate Gohl so that he wouldn't be able to become King. They tortured the doctor that delivered him, who confessed that Gohl was Hornless.
Zambajil interrupted the coronation event and pulled of Gohl's horns in front of the public, exposing him as a Hornless Boazanian. The onlookers gasped upon finding out that he had been hiding his true nature from them, while Lozaria covered her eyes. Gohl was then thrown in prison, while Lozaria was exiled from the palace. Fearing Zambajil's wrath, she fled to the countryside with her parents, preparing to raise her son with them. Since Gohl was in jail, she was unable to tell him that she was pregnant with his child. Lozaria then died in childbirth after delivering a boy - Prince Heinel.
Gohl, who at this point was enslaved, didn't know Lozaria had died until news spread that she died in childbirth. He begged his overseers to at least let him buy flowers for her grave, but was abused in return. Gohl, now enraged, began inciting slave rebellions. Using his skill in science and technology, he began creating weapons that the slaves would use to attempt to overthrow Zambajil. However, they were unsuccessful each time.
Gohl was urged by his fellow slaves to flee Boazania for his own good. He initially refused, but they stated that he was their final hope for a future free of slavery and he was too valuable to die given his intelligence. They managed to safeguard a ship for his travel and shielded him with their bodies as the Boazanian Empire's forces opened fire on them. A frenzied Gohl hurried into the ship and flew as far as he could, far away from Boazania. It was by pure chance that the planet the ship eventually crash-landed on happened to be Earth, which had a populace full of people that looked like him.
Upon landing on earth, Gohl was discovered by a Japanese scientist named Mitsuyo Goh. They fell in love, and he assimiliated into Japanese society. He adopted the name "Kentaro Goh" to hide his real identity. Kentaro and Mitsuyo had three children, Kenichi, Daijirou and Hiyoshi. He was a loving father to them, but he also foresaw the Boazanian invasion. He told the Earthlings of it, but only a few of them thought he was telling the truth. Some of the humans that believed him included Professor Hamaguchi, Professor Sakaonji and General Oka. Kentaro, Mitsuyo, Hamaguchi and Oka worked together and created the robot Voltes V, designed to protect the Earth when the invasion inevitably happened.
Back on Boazania, Heinel, left without a mother and a father, was raised by his maternal grandparents. Since he was exiled from the Palace due to Gohl's betrayal, Heinel grew a strong hatred of him. While he was of royal blood, he was never respected by his fellow nobles, instead being brought up hated and shunned by them. He was labelled as a traitor's son, and made to suffer repeated humiliations based on his father's actions. The nobles of Boazania scapegoated him for his father's actions, claiming that he would also grow up to be a traitor. Fellow noble children would also pelt him with sticks and stones any time he was in public, to the point it wasn't safe for him to go outside. Only his maternal grandparents showed him genuine love.
One day, a fellow noble child, Katherine Rii, saw Heinel being bullied and felt protective of him. She befriended Heinel, and they became close friends. The Rii family was also close with Heinel's maternal grandparents, and when they passed away, the Rii family took him in and raised him alongside Katherine.
Emperor Zambajil secretly despised Heinel because he was the true heir to the throne. He only appointed him a position in the royal court out of reluctance. However, he hid this from Heinel.
Knowing that he had very little chance among the ruling class, Heinel decided to earn others' respect through military. He graduated as the top cadet at the Boazanian Institute of Military Sciences and Warfare and became a proud warrior.
After several years, Emperor Zambajil launched an invasion on Earth led by Prince Heinel. Heinel is aided by his General, Jangal, his scientist, Zuhl and his childhood friend, Katherine. The Boazanians manage to lay waste to countries all over the world, including three million fatalities in Italy, burning Buenos Aires to the ground, destroying the Twin Towers and cutting off all commmunication between London and the rest of the world. Many survivors were forced to retreat. Mitsuyo Goh and Professor Hamaguchi summoned Kenichi, Daijirou, Hiyoshi, Ippei and Megumi to enter their respective vehicles and form Voltes V.
At first, the team manage to successfully defeat the first Beast Knight sent by Heinel's forces, Dokugaga. However, Heinel then deployed Baizanga, a stronger Beast Knight that manages to subdue the robot. Fearing for her children's safety, an injured Mitsuyo abandons her hospital room and enters a jet plane, where she flies into Baizanga, killing herself but managing to free the robot. Kenichi is broken and screams in shock, before brutally beating down Baizanga. The Voltes team mourned the loss of Mitsuyo, with Hamaguchi becoming a surrogate parental figure for them afterwards. From then on, they would fight the Boazanian's forces to protect Earth.
Heinel's repeated losses were a source of frustration for him, especially as he felt humiliated at losing to a race he considered inferior. He would punish his aides for their losses, except Katherine, who he had a soft spot for. Jangal was at one point arrested and Zuhl was whipped as punishment for failing to defeat Voltes V. Heinel at one point manned a Beast Knight himself and came close to defeating Voltes V, but due to Zuhl and Zaki's sabotage, Hamaguchi ordered them to take advantage of it's weakness and overload it with energy, causing it to explode.
Unbeknownst to Heinel, while Katherine and Jangal are loyal to him, Zuhl isn't. Zuhl was working with Zambajil to get rid of Heinel, but was caught in the act and executed. In his stead, Zambajil sent Belgan, a scientist who specialized in making Maxingal alloys. He produced armoured Beast Knights that managed to put up stronger fronts against Voltes V, but still failed to defeat it. While spying, Katherine would catch Heinel performing a religious ritual involving slitting the throat of a bird and pouring it's blood in a chalice. Katherine was horrified, as the ritual was only done by Boazan warriors prepared to die, but Heinel firmly told her to leave and think nothing of it.
Katherine was desperate to stop Heinel from dying and planned to kill Kenichi. She sent him a letter claiming that she was a Hornless Boazanian woman named "Jane", and she knew where his father was, and she would tell him if he met her at a Church. She also told him to come alone as she was scared of being caught by forces of the Boazanians. Kenichi eagerly believed this, and without bothering to verify if it was true, met Katherine at the planned position. The church was rigged with traps and explosives, but Kenichi managed to survive them while shielding "Jane" with his body. Unfortunately, the explosion of one of the bombs caused Katherine's veil to fly off, revealing her horns. Kenichi then realized that he had been tricked. Katherine tried to stab him with a dagger, but he shot her. As she managed to enter her spaceship, Heinel sent her a transmission and ordered her to come back to their base, furious at her reckless behaviour, which Katherine obliged to.
Heinel planned to take advantage of this situation as without Kenichi, the Voltes team couldn't form Voltes V. He arrived to the location and challenged Kenichi to a swordfight. As they duelled, Kenichi told Heinel that he swore to defend Earth, which Heinel mocked. He also told him he had Boazanian blood, which Heinel refused to believe. Heinel managed to knock the sword out of his hand, assuming that he had won. However, as they were on ice, Kenichi slid to Heinel's legs, knocked him over, and grabbed his horns before taking back his sword. Heinel became enraged that Kenichi would dare to touch the horns of a Boazanian, and angrily charged at Kenichi. As their swords met, they passed out and fell into the sea. Katherine used her saucer to rescue Heinel and take him back to the base.
After they were bandaged, Heinel scolded Katherine for her actions, but she thanked him for saving her life. He told her that he only did it out of honour, as it would look bad if she, a noble Boazanian, died.
Jangal is curious about Kenichi's claims of being Boazanian. He finds it hard to believe that a planet like Earth, that is 14,000 light years away from Boazania, would be able to have a Boazanian diaspora. However, he quickly comes up with an idea to prove Kenichi is telling the truth. He plans to infect the boy and his siblings with a virus that only Boazanians can overcome. He tells his plan to Katherine, who tells Heinel. Heinel initially disapproves and calls Kenichi a liar, but Jangal brings up the possibility of Voltes V being in cahoots with the Boazanian resistance, claiming it is necessary to verify it for the very reason. Heinel gives him his permission, and Jangal puts the plan in action.
Luring the brothers with a hologram of their long-lost father, Kentaro, Jangal infects them with the virus. When they recover from it, Jangal and Heinel are shocked to see that Kenichi was telling the truth. This exacerbates Heinel's desire to defeat the Voltes team, calling the Go brothers a disgrace to their race.
One day, Heinel's witnesses his forces suddenly abandon him. Katherine informs him that saucers are leaving the base, and Jangal finds out that most of their army is gone. Shocked, he demands to know what's going on. Gurul and Belgan then send a transmission to Heinel from Gurul's ship, They tell him that because he has failed to produce a single victory over Voltes V, Zambajil has exiled him. They both laugh at him before ending the transmission. Heineltries to hide his tears, but is unable to. After he regains his composure, he declares that he will still fight Voltes V, and asks that Katherine and Jangal, his two most loyal aides, put their trust in him. They do, and Heinel presses a button that reveals the true form of the secret base.
Gurul and Belgan lure Voltes V into Heinel's secret base. They manage to break in, while looking for the Go brother's father, Kentaro. In actuality, Gurul and Belgan discovered the rebel's secret base and took Gohl back to Boazania, where he was held prisoner - Zambajil wanted to use his talent in science to strengthen Boazania's machinery. They are confronted by Jangal, who challenges them to a fight. Jangal ends up losing. Being surrounded, he admits defeat, and asks that Daijirou give him back his sword. Daijirou is unsure, but Kenichi believes that Jangal doesn't mean to harm them and tells him to give it back. Jangal then apologizes to Kenichi for lying and tells him that as Boazanian, it would be a great dishonour for him to live after losing a battle, so he takes his sword and stabs himself in the stomach. Willingly committing suicide, his last words are praising Prince Heinel and pledging his loyalty to him.
The Voltes team are horrified by the sight, while Katherine and Heinel are bewildered, not expecting Jangal to go out like that. Before he bleeds to death, Jangal reveals to Kenichi Goh that Goh is imprisoned on Boazania.
Heinel, desperate to regain his honour, attempts to pilot a ship to fight the Voltes team. Katherine, however, shoots him with a stun gun and takes him to Boazania, while Gurul and Belgan try to blow up the Earth with a magnemite bomb.
Doyle, one of the Hornless Boazanian rebels, flies a ship and disposes of the bomb. He then reveals that Big Falcon is actually a spaceship, and the Voltes team, alongside Sakaonji and Doyle, go to Boazania to free Gohl.
In episode 38, the Voltes team make their way to Boazania. When Zambajil sees them coming, he dispatches Bergan and Gururu to deal with them. While they initially seem victorius, the tides turn when Voltes V overpower them and bypass Sodom and Gomorrah, planet Boazania's defense system. They make it to Boazania and Doyle incites a rebellion, telling the slaves the time has come to rise up. The slaves overtake the nobles' castles and begin destroying the Boazanian's forces. Gurul and Belgan attempt to stop the starship, but are destroyed the Voltes team. Kentaro/Gohl, who is in prison, is broken out by the rebels. He cries upon hearing his three son's voices.
Katherine, fearing for her life, cannot bear to look at the rebellion and withdraws herself in her castle. The ruckus causes Heinel to wake up, and he asks Katherine where he is. Katherine informs him they're in Boazania, in the castle she was born - and that the rebels have taken the planet. She shows him footage of Voltes V idecimating the Boazanian military and tells him that the nobles are fleeing en masse. Infuriated by their cowadice, Heinel sets off to join the battlefield, even though Katherine begs him not to. She tells him that Zambajil doesn't care for him, but he says that he must do it for his honout. As he exits her home on his horse, he yells at Katherine to save herself.
Heinel makes his way to the castle, where he berates Boazanian nobles for defecting and threatens to kill anyone who abandons Zambajil. As a result, he is shot at by one with a gun, but Katherine takes the hit for him and dies. Heinel holds her and begs her not to die, but she passes away, after telling him she loves him. A weeping Heinel realizes he loves her as well.
Heinel then sets his eyes on a room in the Golden Castle that has a statue of Godol. He makes his way to the room and prays to the statue, mentioning the prophecy that Godol would make a Boazanian who is a true warrior the savior of Boazania. He promises Godol that he is being genuine from the bottom of his heart. To prove his "purity of intent" to him, Heinel jumps into the flames. As he plunges, he lands in a cockpit, and realizes that the statue was actually a giant mecha, and an automated message plays saying that he grants his power to anyone who wishes to defend Boazania. Heinel then locates Voltes V and engages in a battle, which eventually results in Voltes V toppling over Godol. The Voltes V team are shocked to discover that Heinel was the one who had been piloting it.
Determined to kill him, Heinel then tosses a sword at Kenichi and challenges him to a fight, despite Kenichi telling him the fight is pointless. The two engage in a swordfight, and as they both break their swords, Heinel yells that the fight isn't over yet and pulls out a dagger. Kentaro instantly recognizes it and asks Heinel where he got it, to which Heinel responds by saying that it doesn't matter and he can't distract him. However, he does say that it is the dagger his mother gave him before she died.
Kentaro then says it does matter because it is the dagger he gave to his first wife, and says it has twin doves on it. Horrified, Heinel looks at the dagger, notices the twin doves, and realizes that Kentaro is right. He feels ashamed that he had been participated in a meaningless war against his family.
Just then Zu Zambajil appears, having tried to escape with a wagonload of riches and a grenade. Once he realizes that he is cornered, he attempts to shift the blame to Heinel, saying that the earthlings should hate him since it was his idea to invade Earth (even though it wasn't). Angered, Heinel yells "What?! I thought you were on the side of good, but you're just a materialistic bastard! DIE!!!" and flings the dagger at him, killing Zambajil. Unfortunately, Zambajil accidentally drops the grenade in the process, causing it to explode and engulf the castle in flames. Heinel then saves Kenichi from the fire and willingly accepts his death, but not before biding a farewell to his newfound family, despite Kenichi screaming "brother" at him and trying to save him. Kentaro also acknowledges Heinel as his son before the flames swallow him whole, while Heinel calls him "dad...!".
Relationships[]
Katherine[]
Katherine loves Heinel, but he doesn't know it. Heinel is convinced from his traumatic childhood that he is unworthy of love, and instead pays attention to superficial things such as royal titles. As a result, he is oblivious to Katharine being sweet to him, and only focuses on her rank as his underling. Heinel doesn't understand that she loves him, and assumes that all her actions as for the sake of the Empire. When he saved Katharine from mortal danger, he justified it by saying that it was because she would disgrace Boazanian nobility if she were to die before an Earthling.
Katharine herself is shown to be devoted to Heinel. When Heinel was punishing his comrades for being unable to defeat Voltes V, while Zuhl and Jangal cowered, she did not move when Heinel brought his sword to her head, stating that she was willing to bear any punishment from him for the sake of his conquest. As a result, Heinel's hand began shaking, unable to bring himself to harm her, though he had cut her veil. He then praised her and said that for her dedication, she can lead the next attack. Katharine always indulges his plans without question and when she gets the opppurtunity to be in charge of guiding Beastmen, she eagerly takes it. She is also violently protective of Heinel due to the multiple assassination attempts he faces due to his position, though this could also be from a place of possessiveness. Much like how Heinel prides himself in being a Boazanian noble, Katharine prides herself in being his right hand. She constantly praises him and encourages his aspirations to colonize the earth. However, when it becomes clear that Heinel is dedicated to fight to the death, Katherine becomes worried because she doesn't want him to die, and tries to save him.
When she learns that Zuhl planned to kill Heinel, she sadistically laughed at the thought of strapping a bomb to him without his knowledge and detonating it.
Katharine is also the only person Prince Heinel confessed his traumatic and humiliating backstory to, something he never did to anyone else. Throughout the series, it is shown that out of all his allies, Heinel trusts her the most.
When she hears that Heinel was sent a new assassin by the Emperor, Belgan, she becomes upset and asks Heinel if he thinks she and Jangal are of no use to him, implying feelings of jealousy/insecurity. Heinel reassures her that he does not.
When she sacrifices himself to save him and confesses her feelings, he realizes that he loves her as well.
Several pieces of supplementary material regarding Voltes V (and the Super Robot Wars games) state that Katherine and Heinel are childhood friends.
Jangal[]
Jangal is one of Heinel's generals. Heinel places heavy expectations on him, and once punished him for failing by locking him up in a dungeon. Despite Heinel's treatment of him, Jangal is fervently loyal to him. His loyalty is why Heinel entrusts him with piloting Beast Knights against Voltes V. In episode 36, when Zambajil announces that he is no longer supporting Heinel, which leads to most of his forces deserting him, Heinel tells Jangal and Katharine to leave if they want, as he will fight Voltes V with or without them. Both refuse to leave.
In episode 37, Jangal challenges the Voltes team to a duel, which ends with him losing his sword. Upon realizing that he is defeated, he asks Kenichi to give him his sword, which he humours despite Daijirou's protests. Jangal then stabs himself with it, telling Kenichi that a Boazanian general would rather face death than surrender. His last words are "Prince Heinel, I give my life to you!". Both Heinel and Katharine cry upon seeing him die, with Heinel confessing "Jangal! You were an excellent warrior! I shall never forget your dedication! Your death won't be in vain!".
Zuhl[]
Zuhl is Heinel's subordinate. While he initially seemed to be loyal to him, he actually hoped to take over his position as commander of the Earth Invasion Force. When Duke Zaki told him that Zambajil planned to have Heinel killed, Zuhl eagerly agreed to it. Both Zaki and Zuhl were oblivious to Katherine eavesdropping on the conversation, and when Zaki mentioned that the Beast Knights they planned to send Heinel in had a weak spot (the armour on the side was unstable), she told Heinel off-screen, which resulted him in adjusting it. This angered both Zuhl and Zaki, the latter's being short-lived as he died shortly after when Heinel's Beast Knight accidentally bit it while it was overloaded with energy. Zuhl would continue to try and assassinate Heinel in later episodes. Though Heinel respected Zuhl to a degree, he once had him tortured for failing to defeat Voltes V.
In episode 22, it is revealed that Zuhl has an arsenel full of weapons ready to take out Heinel. While browsing security footage, he notices an unfamiliar figure, and has him shot. Upon examining his corpse, Zuhl realizes that he is an imperial investigator, implying that Heinel is aware of his assassination plot.
The scene cuts to Heinel slamming his fist, saying he doesn't believe it. When Katherine reads the investigator's message and tells Heinel there's clearly an assassination plot against him, Heinel groans angrily and says that Zuhl doesn't have the means to do it. He tells Jangal to bring Zuhl so he can interrogate him, but Katherine tells him that it is pointless because Zuhl could just deny it. She then says she has another plan, which is to poison him. Heinel laughs and agrees. As they talk, Zuhl surveils them through a secret passage in the walls, and realizes he must strike tonight or he'll be found out.
That night, as Heinel was asleep in his bedroom, Zuhl entered through a secret passageway hidden behind a painting of Zambajil. Upon his arrival, Heinel woke up and noticed him, causing Zuhl to knife him through his bedsheets. However, his expression didn't change. Zuhl continued to stab Heinel, and in frustration, pulled off his sheets. He was then greeted with the sight of ripped pillows, and a model of Heinel's head. He realized that he had been tricked with a robot model of Heinel. Jangal then emerges from the same passageway and presses a sword to Zuhl's cheek, and Heinel and Katherine arrive with several armed soldiers. Heinel tells Zuhl he knew about the passageway long before he did, and Katherine tells him it was her idea to let him overhear their conversation. As Zuhl begs for mercy, Jangal announces that he should die, but Heinel stops him. As Zuhl thanks him and insists he made the right choice, Heinel kicks him and tells him he will only forgive him if he kills all of the members of the Voltes team. Zuhl is unsure, but when Heinel tells him his life depends on it, he agrees.
In the next scene Zuhl arrives at Big Falcon with shackled legs and a large, round weight. Though the guards originally assume he is an old man, the Voltes team recognize him as Zuhl. Zuhl begs for their mercy and tells them Heinel wants him dead.
Zuhl is then taken to their emergency room while a welder tries to dismantle the weight chained to his legs. Zuhl tells the Voltes team that Heinel always tortured him and one day, threw him in a cell. While Kenichi, Hiyoshi, Daijirou and Megumi listen intently, Ippei calls it "bullshit" and asks how he escaped so easily. Zuhl replies that he was helped by Boazanian rebels.
Back at their spaceship, Katherine praises Heinel for his plan of secretly attaching a bomb in the weight around Zuhl's leg, and Heinel remarks that Zuhl should be honoured to die in the line of duty. They laugh amongst each other.
After the weight is dismantled, Tako hears a ticking sound from it, and throws it outside of Big Falcon, saving them and Zuhl from its explosion. The Voltes Team laugh, but an angered Ippei confronts Zuhl and accuses him of setting them up to be killed. Despite Zuhl inisting that he is innocent, Ippei lifts his staff and says he ought to shaft him. However, Ippei then realizes the staff is ticking too. He realizes it is another bomb and throws it outside. Like the first bomb, it explodes.
Zuhl then realizes that Heinel hid bombs all over him without telling him, and swears to have Heinel killed. He tells the Voltes team where the Boazanian underground base is located. However, when they arrive, they are greatly outnumbered by Heinel's forces. However, they cannot leave as Ippei exited his machine to attack Zuhl for leading them into an ambush.
Heinel enters the room, and states that if anyone moves, Ippei dies. He then thanks Zuhl for bringing the Voltes team to him. Upon realizing that he can weasel into Heinel's good graces, Zuhl claims he deliberately led the Voltes team here, and Heinel tells him he will be rewarded. When Zuhl thanks him, Heinel angrily screams "Idiot! Do you think I can't see through your scheme? Zuhl! You led the Voltes team so you can kill them and use Voltes V against me! You traitor!".
Heinel then reveals that they aren't in the Boazanian base, and Zuhl deliberately misled them. Zuhl then pulls a knife from his clothing and hides it behind his back, before pleading for another chance. When Heinel rejects it and orders for Zuhl to be taken away, he throws it at him, only for Heinel to unsheath a short part of his blade, causing it to ricochet into the ground. Zuhl is then shot by Heinel's guards. While they're distracted, Ippei returns to his vehicle. The guards try to shoot the Voltes team as well, but they manage to escape. On their way out they cross paths with another Beast Knight and win.
Afterwards, Heinel says death is too lenient of a sentence for Zuhl as he has dishonoured them. He then orders for the destruction of every memory of him, including his belongings and pictures of him. The guards oblige.
Zambajil[]
Zambajil is Heinel's uncle. He despises him as Heinel is the true heir to the throne, being the son of La Gohl, while he is the son of the Emperor and a mistress. Their relation is technically first cousins once removed, though Heinel calls him "uncle" as their fathers are brothers.
Throughout the series Zamboail tries to repeatedly get Heinel killed, and repeatedly humiliates him by sending him assassins and at one point even sends a robot of La Gohl and convinces him it is real. According to Duke Zaki, Zambajil thinks Heinel leading the earthern invasion was a mistake, and regularly mocks him behind his back by calling him "stupid" and "a failure". When Heinel survives, Zambajil is angered, and then exiles him. In the series finale, Heinel urges him to stop the fight, but when he refuses and tries to pin the blame on him, Heinel kills him with his dagger.
Kenichi[]
Heinel viewed Kenichi as a sworn enemy due to him being the leader of Voltes V, though the two fought rarely fought one-one.
Their first direct confrontation was in episode 30, when Katherine ambushed him and Heinel went to save her. Heinel and Kenichi then had a swordfight duel. At first Heinel initially seemingly won by knocking the sword out of Kenichi's hand, until Kenichi tackled him by siliding across the ice and knocking him to the ground. When Kenichi touched Heinel's horns, Heinel became enraged and swore to kill him. The two continued to spar until they fell into the sea, after which Katherine rescued Heinel and took him back to their secret base.
When Heinel learns Kenichi identifies as Boazanian he grows enraged and swears to have his head for "humiliating" him. He continues to deny his Boazanian heritage until Jangal proves that he does in Episode 37. In episode 40, once he finds out that Kenichi and him share the same father, he grows remorseful and is ashamed to have been fighting against his own blood. Heinel then saves Kenichi from the fire and willingly accepts his death, but not before biding a farewell to his newfound family, despite Kenichi screaming "brother" at him and trying to save him, his brothers also acknowledging Heinel as their brother as well.
Prince Gohl[]
Though Heinel had never met his father, he considered him a "traitor" and would frequently curse him. In episode 8, he tells Katherine that he was driven from the palace due to his father's crimes. He was also was abused and shunned throughout his childhood by his fellow Boazanians, and nicknamed "the traitor's son". To atone for his father's sins, Heinel swore to redeem himself by invading the earth and bringing glory to Boazania. Whenever his name is mentioned, Heinel becomes incensed.
Gohl didn't make the connection that Heinel was his son until Heinel produced a dagger his mother had given him, which Gohl recognized as the one he had given to his first wife as a gift. Once Heinel realized he had been fighting his own flesh and blood, he became so ashamed that he begged Zambajil to stop the fighting. Zambajil started blaming Heinel for the war, so Heinel threw his dagger at him which caused him to drop his grenade. Heinel then pushed Kenichi out of the way, accepting his death. As Gohl called Heinel his son, Heinel called him "father".
Lozaria[]
Lozaria died giving birth to Heinel. However, she gave him something to remember her with, a dagger gifted to her by La Gohl with twin doves on it. Heinel keeps it with him at all times.
Relatives[]
On September 30, 1979, the bi-monthly Japanese magazine OUT (published by Minori Shibou) released an issue titled "Rendezvous" that contained Heinel's genealogy. Though the article is in Japanese, it has been translated here.
Wife | |───➝ 123rd Emperor of Boazania | |───➝ Zambajil | Concubine | ────| | | | Lozaria |───➝ Oral La |───➝ Heinel |───➝ Gohl La Wife |───➝ Kenichi Gō |───➝ Daijiro Gō |───➝ Hiyoshi Gō Mitsuyo Gō
Development[]
“ | Up until now, when it came to robot anime, the battle scenes were its sales point, and the story concluded in one episode. Voltes V was a creation intended to go beyond that. I wanted to get behind the perspectives of the enemy to express their psychological aspects to the audiences. I also wanted to create some sort of blood relationship between the hero and its enemy. Previous animes have never dealt with social themes but in Voltes, I have presented a situation where there was prejudice between those who had horns and those who didn't. And I wanted to intigrate that situation into this epic saga. This work delves into the lives of different people. Since Prince Heinel's character was well written, it was possible for the audience to see things from his perspective. But that is not enough, take one step further. La Gohl was enslaved because he did not have horns. What would have happened if he didn't stand up for his cause? He risked his own life to fight for his cause, believing that there should be no slavery among their people. La Gohl's agenda for life is just as worthy as that of Prince Heinel's. This work requires a lot of thinking from the audience. I would be grateful if this work be given some thoughts and applied to your own lives | „ |
~ Tadao Nagahama, Roman Robo Anime Climax Selection #14 |
According to director Tadao Nagahama, Prince Heinel's character was created because Akinori Watanabe was worried that the plot will be too depressing to viewers and wanted to avoid viewers crying all the time. He based Heinel on one of the actors in Takarazuka Revue.[2]
In concept art, Heinel had curlier hair and resembled Griffith. His horns were also thinner and more caliced, and resembled unicorn horns. Tadao Nagahama stated that Heinel has a unicorn animal motif, but his finalized design's horns are reminiscient to that of a water buffalo's.
In the Voltes V Roman Album Art book, the artist's notes state "Prince Heinel. Has there ever been a villain with such drama? Heinel can also be called a hero. He's a handsome young man with splendid beauty. He wears gorgeous clothes and has a beautiful voice, just like the French aristocrats of the Middle Ages. Yuki Hijiri designed the school uniform based on the image of Spain, but in the anime, it was changed to make it easier to move around and add luxury, such as wearing tights on the bottom and a cape on the top.
According to his profile in the Encyclopedia of Monsters 53rd edition (published by Keibunsha), Heinel's height is 180cm and his weight is 52 kilograms.[3] However, other sources state his height to be 185cm.[4]
In the original draft of the series finale, Heinel was to kill Zambajil with his sword, but get stabbed with Zambajil's own sword in the way. As he dies, he calls Kenichu his brother, and the Voltes team wrap his corpse in the flag of the Boazanian empire. This was changed in the final cut, where Heinel would accept his death as he was surrounded by flames. However, the script did keep him crying out for his father.[5]

Skills[]
- Commanding: In episode 8 Zuhl tells Zaki that Heinel was chosen to command the invasion to earth because no one else was as qualified as him. When Zaki proposes murdering him, he tells him it will be difficult because he is gifted at his craft.
- Swordfighting: Heinel owns a sword which he uses to break things when he loses his temper. He is a skilled swordfighter and defeated Kenichi in swordfighting duels twice, for the first time in episode 30 and the second time in episode 40.
- Master strategist: Even when unexpected events happen, Heinel can weave them into his plans and benefit from them. For example, in episode 30, when his aide deulled Kenichi without telling him, Heinel was initially angry, but then realized that Katherine keeping him occupied would mean that Voltes V couldn't form.
- Piloting: Heinel graduated as the top cadet at the Boazanian Institute of Military Sciences and Warfare. In episode 8, when he piloted a Beast Knight against Voltes V, he brought them to their knees and only lost as Professor Hamaguchi ordered the Voltes Team to exploit a flaw in the design of his Beast Knight (overloading from absorbing too much power). In episode 40 he serves as a forbidable enemy to Voltes V while piloting Godol, though he loses.
- Horse-riding: He knows how to ride a horse and did so in episode 40.

Other appearances[]
Manga[]
In "Episode 41: Aristocrats who Strike Back" in the Super Robot manga Super Electromagnetic Robocon Battler V Super Electromagnetic Machine Voltes V Tosho Daimos (edited by Futabasha), it is revealed that Heinel barely survived, and resumed life "as a citizen without horns and a citizen with horns". As a person who stands between the nobility and the commoners, he folds one horn and calls himself "Knight Monohorn". He dons armour that resembles Godol, and becomes an ally of Kenichi and the Voltes team. Heinel also appeared in the second part of "Super Electromagnetic War Victory Five". He died at the end of the same work, but in the sequel set several decades later, he is resurrected by Barao, the Demon Emperor.[6]
However, this is not canon to the anime.
Books[]
Heinel appeared on the cover of the August 1977 issue of Televi-Kun.
According to the Roman Robo Anime Climax Selection, Katherine and Heinel were foster siblings and her mother was his wet nurse/nanny. After Heinel's maternal grandparents (Rozalia's parents) died, the Ri family raised him alongside Katherine. It also states that as children, Katherine saw Heinel being bullied and felt protective of him. She is also older than him. However this is never touched on in the anime, and the anime implies otherwise as Heinel explains his backstory to her (something which would have been unnecessary if they grew up together since she would already know that). By it's nature, the Roman Robo Album takes a lot of liberties with the canon of Voltes V.
Heinel has a section dedicated to him in the Animage August 1978 Prince Heinel memorial special titled "Prince Heinel Forever". Heinel would appear again in Animage's February 1979 and March 1982 issues. He also had a brief appearance in Animage's May 1982 issue with Kenichi.
The April 1978 issue of children's magazine Shogakukan no Kindergarten featured a section with an alternate ending to Voltes V, illustrated by Matsuda Tatsuhiko. In the short manga, Voltes V effortlessly slays Godol, and Heinel escapes in the aforementioned rocket, vowing that he'll be back. All alone after the last of his comrades are slaughtered, the chances of him winning a war are unlikely and he doesn't learn about his true paternity. The Go brothers, however, are re-united with their father and they all cry tears of joy.
Heinel appears multiple times in the Japanese 月刊OUT magazine series. He appeared for the first time in the September 1979 issue. He appeared again on the cover of the February 1980 issue, side by side with Richter of Tosho Daimos. The February 1980 issue also contained sketches of Heinel and Katherine. He appeared for the third time on the June 1980 issue with the rest of Tadao Nagahama's villains, and for the fourth time on the July 1980 issue. The March 1981 issue of OUT features a parody manga of Voltes V called "Strange Aristocratic Story" written by Masami Yuuki.
Video games[]
Shin Super Robot Wars[]
Heinel appears in Shin Super Robot Wars as the secret character. Unlike the anime ending, Heinel and Katherine survive.
To recruit Heinel, during Scenario 19 (Earth route) "Boazan Pride" if Jangal's HP reduced to 45% or less, he'll recover his HP and call for reinforcement. If you get his HP down to 20% or less from there, Skullrook will attack with the Daikuu Maryuu. You must not counterattack it. While Jangal drops a lot of money if killed, one must ensure that they do not kill him, or it will earn Heinel's ire.
Persuade Heinel, who appears in Scenario 20: Betrayal three times with Voltes V (Kenichi).
After Scenario 22 is over, Heinel leaves the team until the final scenario: The Power of Madness.
In the second segment of Scenario 36, Heinel re-joins if you move Voltes V (Kenichi) to the upper left side of the map. ("horizontal 1: vertical 10" to "horizontal 6: vertical 15".)
Once Zuhl and Skullrook are eliminated in the Earth Route scenario, Heinel decides to go on a journey, on which Katherine insists on accompanying him. Kazuya figures that the two of them will be happy together.
Super Robot Wars Alpha[]
Heinel invades earth after Zambajil orders him to, but if you discover the hidden elements, he can make it to the final scene.
To recruit Heinel:
Stage | Route | Stage Name | Action |
---|---|---|---|
50 | - | ヴァリアブル・フォーメーション (Variable Formation) | Choose the Garaon route |
53 | Goraon | 地球を賭けた一騎打ち (Duel For The Earth) | Have Kenichi and Heinel fight, but miss Heinel or leave him alive |
55 | Goraon | 父の胸の中で泣け! (The Cry Within Father's Breast!) | Have Voltes V attack adjacent to Heinel |
65 | - | ギア・オブ・デスティニー (The Gear Of Destiny) | Shoot down Heinel's Skullrook, persuade him when he is in Godol, and have 45 or more skill points |
66 | 45+ skill points | 絶望の宴は今から始まる (The Banquet Of Despair Begins Now) | Heinel can be availed at this point |
2nd Super Robot Wars Alpha[]
Heinel claims to be fighting for redemption and will aid Kenichi, acknowledging him as a brother. He tells him to care for La Gohl and the Go brothers acknowledge him as their elder brother. He also saves Richter.
3rd Super Robot Wars Alpha[]
Heinel has a bonus of Accuracy + 30% in his stats.
Heinel saves Richter (depending on the choices). In addition, in the sub-scenario "Under the Flag of Justice", he is depicted fighting alone.
Super Robot Wars A[]
After the decisive battle at the Underground Castle, even if Godol is destroyed, he still retaliates and tries to fight, but he is put to sleep with a tranquilizer gun by the hands of Katherine who does not want him to die. I is presumed that he fled with Katherine to some distant star. He never learns that the Gou brothers are his half-brothers.
Super Robot Wars R[]
After Heinel pilots Godol, Katherine escapes with him in a spaceship provided by Leria.
Super Robot Wars J[]
He looks down on Grados just like the Earthlings. When Belgan kills Katherine, Heinel is sent an intense grief and rage. He challenges Voltes V, Kentaro and their allies to a fight despite Kenichi's protests. During their confrontation, Kentaro recognizes the dagger in his hand, making the connection that Heinel is his son. Kentaro yells that the fight between the horned and the hornless is pointless, and Kenichi calls him his brother. However, a disgusted Heinel rejects him and tells him not to call him that. Heinel announces that the earthlings have defeated him and the emperor has abandoned him, and accepts his death, stating "I accept my defeat as a man, and as the son of the traitor La Gohl!".
When Kenichi calls him "brother" again, Heinel replies "I wish you well. Make sure you rebuild your world after this battle. However, I will remain a Boazanian noble towards the bitter end!". However, Kenichi, Daijiro and Hiyoshi refuse to accept this, voicing concern for him and still calling him "brother", which causes Heinel to laugh, saying "Heh, you insist on calling me that...even if I share the same flesh and blood as you, I cannot change my way of life! I refuse to abandon my pride!", before allowing the flames to consume him. Luckily, the Voltes team, Kentaro and their allies are saved by Hamaguchi.
New Super Robot Wars[]
Heinel appears as a potential ally to defeat Zulu and disappears with Katherine. He is one of the game's more stronger characters due to piloting Godol.
Super Robot Wars DD[]
Heinel appears as a background character with Katherine.
Trivia[]
- Heinel's name was chosen because it sounds like "your highness", a formal style used to address or refer to certain members of a reigning dynasty.[7][8]
- Heinel served as an inspiration to Char Aznable - interestingly, Yoshiyuki Tomino worked on Voltes V before Gundam.
- Heinel's astrological star sign is Aquarius.
- Heinel often speaks in a formal manner, as expected of one in nobility. In the final episode, he refers to Kentaro as "dad" instead of "father" in Japanese, signifying that he no longer cares about being formal (according to his voice actor Osamu Ichikawa, he wanted Heinel to sound awkward on purpose and asked for multiple takes before it was finalized). However, this was lost in English subs and dubs of Voltes V.
- Heinel's laugh ("HAUGH-HAUGH-HAUGH-HAUGH-HAUGH-HAUGH-HAUGH-HAUGH!") is known as the "Ojou laugh" in anime, and is more common amongst female characters than male ones. Katharine herself has a similar laugh.
- Heinel knows how to ride a horse.[9]
- Heinel has a tendency to use insects as a means to insult others - in the first episode he calls humans "worms" and in the final episode he calls them "hornless bugs". In the Japanese version of the series finale, he Zambajil a "maggot".
- Heinel enjoys sunbathing and often did so from the dome on Skullrook.
- Heinel's name was changed in various dubs of Voltes V:
- In the English dub, he was known as Zardoz.
- In the Italian dub, he was known as Sirius.
- In the Greek dub, he was also known as Sirius.
- In the Brazilian Portuguese dub, he was known as Príncipe Shardus.
- According to writer Sechiro Hayakawa, at the time of broadcasting, director Tadao Nagahama received many fan letters from female fans regarding Heinel. His article also notes Heinel was popular among children as well.[10]
- When Heinel enters Godol, Tadao Nagahama voices the message he hears upon sitting down.
- There are many clues that Heinel is La Gohl's son across the story:
- In Dange's flashback in episode 28, Gohl is shown to be born with blonde hair, the same hair colour Heinel inherited.
- Both graduated at the top of their respective schools.
- Both personally command, and take charge of, armed revolutions aimed at destabilizing the status quo.
- 8Heinel treats his comrades with respect and mercy. He was willing to forgive Bergan for an assassination attempt, and also cried at Jangal's death. He allows his comrades to participate in battles if they prove themselves. When Katherine disobeyed him and took Kenichi on her own in episode 30, he was angry, but he did not punish her. In episode 40, as he advances towards the castle, he yells at Katherine, his last surviving comrade, to save herself. In contrast, Zambajil humiliated Gururu for forgetting his salute and when he was losing the war, he tried to pin the blame on Heinel instead of taking responsibility.
- In many ways, Zambajil is a foil to Heinel:
- While both pride themselves for their Boazanian heritage, Heinel also places importance on flesh and blood, and was willing to cease fighting once he found out Gohl was his father. Zambajil on the other hand viewed La Gohl as a threat to the throne first and a member of his family second, and had him abused and imprisoned even as La Gohl begged for peace.
- Heinel treats his comrades with respect and mercy. He was willing to forgive Bergan for an assassination attempt, and also cried at Jangal's death. - Heinel worked to get where he was, graduating as the top cadet at the Boazanian Institute of Military Sciences and Warfare, but Zambajil was handed everything to him based on his birthright and has no experience in fighting.
- Heinel actively takes charge in missions, while Zambajil dispatches troops to do his bidding.
- Jun'ichi Suwabe has expressed a desire to succeed Osamu Ichikawa as Heinel's voice actor.[11]
