~ Zardoz to Zandra and Draco. |
Prince Zardoz is the main antagonist of the Filipino live-action series Voltes V: Legacy. He is son of Baron Hrothgar and his first wife Rosalia, making him the prince of The Boazanian Empire., sent by his uncle, Emperor Zambojil, to conquer earth. He serves as the archenemy of the Voltes Team (most espescially Steve Armstrong).
He was portrayed by Martin del Rosario.[1]
He is based on Prince Heinel from Voltes V. However, his characterization is significantly different from the mainstream depiction of Prince Heinel, including his relationship with his love interest, Zandra.
Personality[]
As a child, he was kind and affectionate, which disgusted his uncle, who taught Zardoz to be hateful and look down on non-Boazonians. Because of his upbringing, Zardoz is desperate to prove himself as a warrior and commits atrocities in the name of honour. He is capable of remorse (as he was horrified at the prospect of attacking his own father in episode 2), but as the series goes on, Zardoz becomes more and more ruthless as he is desperate for victory.
He is dedicated to his mission and pulls out no stops in his assault against Big Falcon. He is ashamed when his uncle berates him for losing to Voltes V and when his beast fighters fail, he tends to lose his temper and become enraged. Zardoz has even murdered his own servants in fits of rage. He frequently doles out verbal abuse to Draco and Zandra because of their incompetence, and also treats Oslak and Zaki in a similar manner.
His actor, Martin del Rosario, describes Zardoz as "not born evil".[2]
History[]
Zardoz was born as the Prince of the Boazanian Empire. His father was the disgraced Baron Hrothgar, and his mother was a noblewoman named Rosalia. Zardoz never knew his birth parents, being raised by his uncle, Emperor Zambojil.
From a young age, Zardoz was told that his father, Hrothgar, was a traitor to the Boazanian Empire, not knowing the full truth about him. Hrothgar was born into the Boazanian Royal Family as well (as the son of the Emperor's younger brother), but he was born without horns. According to the aeons-long law of Boazania, only those with horns were allowed to be nobles, while those without them were subject to extreme cruelty and treated as slaves. To make sure he didn't live a life of slavery, Hrothgar's parents fashioned for him a pair of fake horns. Even though Hrothgar lived amongst the nobles, he saw the cruelty the Hornless were subjected to and was disgusted by it. He would frequently stand up for the oppressed Boazanians and condemn the cruelty the Horned inflicted on them. Hrothgar's dream was to create a society equal for without those with and without horns. One day, Hrothgar's wife, Rosalia, discovered his secret while he was complaining about the societal injustice the Hornless faced to his parents. She was surprised, but told him she loved him anyway and kept his secret.
Because of his skill in technology and invention, the Emperor of Boazania chose Hrothgar as his successor. This made Zambojil jealous, so he tried to find some way to usurp the throne from him. His minions tortured the doctor that delivered Hrothgar, who eventually admitted that he was hornless. On the day of his coronation, Zambojil exposed Hrothgar in front of everyone. Hrothgar was booed by the crowd, and then forced to work as a slave in the mines alongside the other Hornless Boazanians. To bring down his morale, Zambojil told him that his wife, Rosalia, and their son, Zardoz, were killed, taking pleasure in Hrothgar's reaction.
While he was enslaved, Hrothgar was told of some slaves' plan to rebel against the Boazanian nobles. After they managed to attack their superiors, the slaves sacrificed themselves so that Hrothgar could enter a ship and managed to escape Boazania.
Hrothgar's ship crashed on Earth and he was found by Mary Ann Collins Armstrong. She learned of his story and fell in love with him. He adopted the name "Ned Armstrong" on Earth. While many people didn't believe Ned Armstrong's warning, Dr. Richard Smith, Mary Ann and General Robinson did, and together they set up Camp Big Falcon.
Ned/Hrothgar and Mary would go on to have three children, Steve, Bert and Jon. Hrothgar created the robot Voltes V because he knew the Boazanians would invade, and wanted a way for Earth to defend itself. He returned to Boazania to convince Zambojil not to invade the planet.
This didn't work, but he managed to escape arrest and flee to Earth where he would manage the Mechanical Eagle. Mary and Richard believed Ned/Hrothgar was dead as he never came back, so they began training pilots at Camp Big Falcon to join the Voltes team. Apart from training Steve and Bert, Dr. Smith also oversaw the training of other pilots including Mark Gordon, Jamie Robinson, Eva Sanchez, PJ Santiago, Ally Chan and Tomas del Rosario. Jon Armstrong wanted to join them, but due to his age, he was rejected as a potential candidate.
Unbeknownst to Hrothgar, Zambojil lied about the fate of his first wife and son. In actuality, Rozalia died in childbirth, while Zardoz was taken from his paternal grandparents to be raised by Zambojil. In spite of presenting himself as a loving father figure to the boy, Zambojil wanted to get rid of him because he was a threat to the throne. He planned to send him to colonize the Earth when he came of age, hoping he would perish in the war.
From a young age, Zardoz received frequent ridicule based on his father's actions from his fellow Boazanians. He was called "the traitor's child" and shunned by them. As a result, he became desperate to clear his name and regain his honour. Behind his back, Zambojil fed into the shunning. He wanted to groom Zardoz into being a glory-obsessed fanatic and a pawn for his schemes.
The Boazanians inevitably invaded Earth, with Zardoz leading the invasion. To help his mission, Zardoz was assigned the aides Zandra, Draco and Zuhl by his uncle. They would terrorize the Earth through large mechanical robots called "Beast Fighters".
Camp Big Falcon saw this coming and reacted accordingly. As Steve, Bert, Jon, Mark and Jamie were the only available pilots at the time, they were recruited to pilot Voltes V. Working together, managed to repel the Boazanian's Beast Fighter from the Earth. As a result they became permanent members of the Voltes team.
In combat, each member of the Voltes team was assigned a different unit - Steve piloted the Volt Cruiser, Bert piloted the Volt Panzer, Jamie piloted the Volt Lander, Jon piloted the Volt Frigate and Mark piloted the Volt Bomber. These vehicles would combine to form Voltes V. Dr. Richard Smith would guide them in battle, instructing them on how to defeat the Boazanian's Beast Fighters. Unfortunately, he died when the Boazanians sent a fake robot Ned to Camp Big Falcon, who choked Smith by the neck and stabbed him.
After he died, he was replaced by Dr. Hook as Camp Big Falcon's lead scientist, though his style was radically different from Smith's.
Zardoz hosted multiple plots to defeat Voltes V through beast fighters, but all these plans fail, and as a result he is frequently mocked by his uncle and members of his court. He would take out his anger on his aides and his servants, with the exception of Zandra, who he fell in love with. The two started a romantic relationship and slept together.
Zardoz at one point tries to find out the identities of the Voltes V pilots through a spy named Judalah; unfortunately she betrays him for the Voltes team after falling in love with Bert Armstrong. She tries to unsuccessfully assassinate Zardoz before escaping his ship.
Zardoz then decides to send himself as a spy under the name "Manuel Nobaz" to Big Falcon and presents himself as a victim of drowning on the coast of Big Falcon island. Jon discovers him and takes him to Big Falcon's hospital quarters. Jon, Steve and Bert show concern for Zardoz, and Zardoz reacts by acting sweet and befriending Jon, while secretly planning to sabotage the entire base. Thanks to taking samples from human DNA, the Polseras device ensures that Big Falcon's scanners don't recognize him as a Boazanian.
He works on gaining the brothers' trust, playing with them and giving Steve advice, though Steve rejects it. After gaining sufficient knowledge, Zardoz announces that he must now go home. The brothers are hurt to see him go and tell him they will miss him. As he is leaving, Bert puts an arm on his shoulder, and Steve shakes his hand. Jon pulls Zardoz in a tight hug and gifts him a toy battleship as a token of their friendship, as ships are a personal passion of his. Zardoz accepts the gift and leaves the base. Due to the the threat of Boazanian beast fighters, Zardoz is accompanied by a few Big Falcon personnel as he walks home for safety purposes.
When Zardoz reaches Skullrook, he snaps the neck of a Big Falcon personnel and has his men shoot the remaining ones. After he sheds his disguise as Manuel, he crows about the stupidity of humans and how easy it was to trick them. He also mocks the members of Big Falcon for being "vulnerable", and out of spite, crushes the toy battleship Jon gifted him with his foot. Once again berated by his uncle for failing to stop Voltes V, Zardoz promises to ruin them in his next attack.
Zuhl attempts to assassinate Zardoz but is caught in the act; to repent he leads the Voltes team into a trap that ends with them being sent to Skull Ship. Zardoz announces his desire to present the heroes as gifts to Zambojil and they duel against him, Draco and Zandra. Later, the Voltes team manage to escape. Zardoz then orders for the death of Zuhl since he failed to redeem himself.
Zardoz gives Zuhl the chance to redeem himself by killing himself with a dagger, but Zuhl tries to kill Zardoz. Zardoz then drives the dagger into Zuhl.
With the loss of Zuhl, Zambojil sends General Oslak in his stead. Oslak is introduced to Zardoz when he sends a meteor shower to Earth. He then belligerently appears at the Skull Ship. Draco is suspicous of him and the two duel, with Oslak winning. When Zardoz enters, Oslak pays respect to him and takes off his helmet, telling him he is sent by Zambojil to help him win against Voltes V. He introduces his special armour to Zardoz, Zandra and Draco and insists they can defeat Voltes V. He sends Beast Fighter Okozenia to prove this, but it ends with Voltes V winning thanks to the Mechanical Eagle's interference.
Oslak frequently insults Draco and Zandra because he has Zambojil's favour. Zandra is suspcious of him tells Zardoz that he could be a spy just like Zuhl but Zardoz is angered and tells her to be quiet, threatening her with his sword. Zandra is proven right and Oslak kneels and begs for forgiveness after confessing that he was sent to kill him and that Zambojil promised him his position if he did. Zardoz forgives him; Zandra and Draco do not. Oslak continues to belittle them while sucking up to Zardoz, while still scheming to dispose of the Prince.
Oslak at one point invents a mind-control device, a ring that controls anyine who possess it, and uses it to attempt to rape Zandra. However, the scientists of Skull Ship had been talking about this invention, which Zardoz overheard. He enters the room and shoots at Oslak, before telling him that if he ever tries to molest Zandra again, he will kill him himself. Oslak heeds this warning.
Zandra is hurt by the idea that Zardoz prefers Oslak to her and pilots a ship on her own, hoping to prove her worth to Zardoz. She discovers Steve, lands the ship, and tries to kill him. However, Steve has the upper hand in the fight and is about to kill her when Zardoz (who learned of Zandra's rogue behaviour) intervenes and challenges Steve to a fight. Steve and Zardoz duelled at a playground, and Steve proclaimed that he was going to kill him (while Kenichi told Heinel that he was carrying the will of millions of Earthlings) and stabbed him with the dagger Rozalia gifted him. Zardoz's guards then arrived and shot at Steve until he ran away. Back at the Skull Ship, Zardoz yells at Zandra for causing the situation.
Oslak uses his mind control device on Jamie Robinson by leaving the ring on the beach while she's collecting seashells. Jamie, under his control, steals a rover and attacks several Big Falcon guards, while killing the ones protecting her father, Commander Oscar Robinson. She tries to kill her father but he has her in lock and removes the ring. Once Oslak finds out his plan failed, he shoots Commander Oscar Robinson.
After continuing to lose battles against Voltes V, Zardoz is frustrated and desires a new strategy. Emperor Zambojil sends his chief researcher, Marquise Zaki, to help Zardoz. While introducing herself to him, Zaki gets touchy and flirtatious with Zardoz, which makes Zandra very jealous. However Zardoz rebuffs her advances and admonishes her for the unimpressiveness of her underlings Takeo and Arisa. Though she presented them as powerful warriors that could defeat Voltes V, he considers them an embarassment and walks out of the room in frustration.
Marquise Zaki dispatches Takeo and Arisa to kidnap Little Jon Armstrong, the youngest member of the Voltes team. Takeo and Arisa disguise themselves as humans and try to take Jon hostage, but other Camp Big Falcon personnel come to his aid. While Jon tries to use his invisibility device to hide himself, he is still discovered and then kidnapped. Dr. Hook then regretfully informs the Voltes team that Jon has been taken hostage.
Steve, Mark, Bert and Jamie look for Jon, and then fall into a trap set up by the Boazanians. The trap leads them to a stage constructed by Zaki. Bert realizes that the stage has a force field around it, meaning they can't escape. Feeling hopeless, Mark angrily insults Jon and blames him for being kidnapped. Steve angrily retorts that it isn't his fault, but Mark repeats his claim that the Armstrong brothers are magnets for misfortune. Steve then tries to hit Mark, but Jamie intervenes, only to get injured in the process by Steve, causing her to fall. Both boys are horrified and apologize to her, feeling ashamed. Jamie scolds them both, reminding them that she's just been discharged from the hospital and forced herself out of the ward to save Jon. The four then hear laughter, coming from none other than Marquise Zaki. She calls their fight entertaining.
The four begin attacking Zaki's guards, but when Steve turns a gun on Zaki, she threatens Jon by holding a knife to his neck. Steve, Bert and Jamie surrender and drop their weapons but Mark refuses. Mark loads his gun anyway, pointing it at Zaki despite her pressing the knife further, until Steve wrestles the gun out of his hands. Zaki then releases Jon and he reunites with the Voltes team.
Zaki and her guards then lead the four into another room, where they are observed by Horned Boazanian nobles. Zaki announces that they are to spar with Takeo and Arisa for their entertainment. The Voltes team underestimate the twins, with Bert saying they're not Beast Fighters so they don't stand a chance. Before the fight, Takeo and Arisa ask the Voltes team of the fate of General Watson. Steve tells them that he's dead and he gave his life for the good Boazanian rebels. Takeo is dumbstruck, whispering to Arisa "Our adoptive father is gone....". Arisa, however, is skeptic and calls Steve a liar. Marquise Zaki chides them for talking and says that they must send two fighters from their team to battle Takeo and Arisa one-on-one. Jamie says that she will fight Arisa, and Bert decides to fight Takeo.
Meanwhile, Prince Zardoz asks Zandra and Draco where Marquise Zaki has gone. They both say they don't have any idea. Zardoz expresses frustration at the fact that when his uncle sent him aides, both disappeared suddenly - first General Oslak, and now Marquise Zaki. However, Draco was suspicious of Zaki and had a soldier tail her before she left. The soldier reveals to Draco, Zandra and Zardoz that Marquise Zaki is having the Voltes team battle Takeo and Arisa, which is directly against what Zardoz ordered. Zardoz finally loses faith in his uncle and accuses him of trying to replace his position.
Relationships[]
Zambojil[]
Zardoz adores his uncle and wants his approval, but Zambojil despises him for being soft hearted and having kindness. Every time Zardoz fails a mission, Zambojil berates him and calls him weak. In actuality, Zambojil views him as a rival to the throne due to his heritage and wants to ruin his reputation even further so that he can't challenge him for the throne.
Zandra[]
Zandra and Zardoz love each other, and he gives her affectionate nicknames. Zandra is extremely protective of Zardoz, eavesdropping on the conversations of his associates to ensure they aren't plotting against Zardoz. After Zandra tells her he has all her loyalty they kiss.
When she learns that Zardoz has a spy in Camp Big Falcon (who happens to be female), she gets jealous and asks Zuhl about her.
Every time Zardoz fails a mission, his uncle Zambojil berates him and calls him weak, which hurts him as he greatly looks up to Zambojil. In actuality, Zambojil views him as a threat to the throne, and secretly sent Zuhl to sabotage him on purpose and ensure he loses all his battles against Voltes V to humiliate his name amongst the Boazanian Empire. However, Zandra uncovered this plot while eavesdropping in one of Zuhl's calls with Zambojil. When Zandra informs Zardoz of the truth, he is shaken and upset as he draws his sword at her even when she is willing to risk her life of standing by her word that it is true. He doesn't kill Zandra, but instead surmises that it must be Baron Zander behind the assassination plot because he can't believe his own uncle would do such a thing.
Zuhl is outed as a traitor when he tries to stab a sleeping Zardoz, only to find out it's a hologram. Zuhl begs for mercy, and promises to kill the Voltes team. When this fails, Zardoz offers him the opportunity of redemption by offing himself with a dagger. Zuhl wails and agrees to it, but then tries to kill Zardoz. Zardoz then snaps his neck and orders the removal of Zuhl's traces from all of Skull Ship and the Boazanian Empire.
Oslak is initially introduced when he sends a meteor shower to Earth. He then belligerently appears at the Skull Ship, inhabited by Zardoz and his aides. Draco is suspicous of him and the two duel, with Oslak winning. When Zardoz enters, Oslak pays respect to him and takes off his helmet, telling him he is sent by Zambojil to help him win against Voltes V. Development[]
Accordong to the Phillipine star, Martin del Rosario had to lose weight and build up his physique for the role. He also watched the Tagalog dub of the anime to get a better understanding of his character and changed his voice to make it similar to the character. He also wears a costume that has horns. The same article notes that del Rosario's own parents were huge fans of the original Voltes V anime.[3]
During a fight scene, at one point del Rosario's sword ran across fellow actor Miguel Tanfelix's head, due to the immense weight of the sword props.[4]
Skills/equipement[]
- Sword: Zardoz wields a sword.
- Swordfighting: Zardoz is a skilled martial artist and in Episode 19, is shown to defeat a duel of multiple soldiers while training.
- Spies: He deploys spies to Big Falcon to learn of their plans.
- Technology: Zardoz has technology that allows him to understand the earthern language.
Differences[]
Zardoz has many differences from Heinel.
- Heinel has golden-ginger hair, while Zardoz's is dark brown. Heinel also has toussled hair, elegant features and long eyelashes, while Zardoz's physical attributes are more plain.
- In the fifth episode of Voltes V: Legacy, Zardoz was shown to have wanted love from Zambojil, who he was raised by. However, Zambojil would reject all his attempts at affection and corrupt him with his words to commit evil acts. However in the original anime, Heinel was raised by his maternal grandparents. He never personally met with his uncle, though Zambojil reluctantly appointed him a position in his court.
- Zardoz's punishment to his generals (for losing to Voltes V) are different. In the original anime, he spanks them with the center blade of the sword and slashes Katherine's veil which had covered her eyes. In the live-action remake, Zardoz uses a ring zapper to zap both Draco and Zuhl while using his sword to slash Zandra's veil in half.
- Both Heinel and Zardoz compliment the earth and call it a beautiful planet (despite still wanting to destroy it). However, Zardoz is also shown to be conflicted about taking over the earth and sometimes doubts the morality of it all, whereas Prince Heinel felt no such thing.
- Heinel's motivation to enslave the earth comes from bigotry and wanting to restore his honour. Zardoz's motivation comes the same place, with the additional fact that Baron Hrothgar leaked technology secrets to the humans (though like Heinel, he is obsessed with his honour). From his perspective, he's protecting Boazania after his "traitor" father turned against it.
- Zardoz is shown to be kind and affectionate as a child, while Heinel is shown to be honour-obsessed from a young age, hence graduating as the top cadet at the Boazanian Institute of Military Sciences and Warfare.
- Heinel possessing Lozaria's dagger wasn't revealed until the final episode of the anime. In Legacy, Zardoz owning Rozalia's dagger was established much earlier.
- While both Heinel and Zardoz wield swords, Zardoz is shown to be rather incompetent with his as he was unable to best Steve in a duel. This could be because unlike his anime counterpart, he never received such training.
- Heinel never personally met Gohl until the last episode, while Zardoz met Hrothgar before he departed to Earth.
- Heinel had unwavering trust in Katherine (though he was angry/upset when she implied Zambajil wanted to kill him) and she was his closest confidant (according to supplementary material, Heinel and Katherine knew one another since childhood). In Voltes V: Legacy, Zardoz asks Zandra if he can trust her and it is implied that they did not know each other before.
- In the original anime, Heinel already knew the identities of the Voltes V pilots. In Legacy, Zardoz doesn't, and sends a spy to find out who they are. Later, Zardoz sends himself as spy to Camp Big Falcon.
- Zardoz has a tendency to lose his temper and kill his servants during fits of rage, something Heinel never did.
- Zardoz has electric powers thanks to his finger device, something Heinel never had.
- Heinel is a Tsundere towards Katherine, while Zardoz is also more affectionate to Zandra, nicknaming her "Najmi" (the Boazanian word for "Star").
- However, Zardoz also turns crueller to Zandra when she fails to defeat Voltes V, calling her insults such as "an invalid".
- There is also a love triangle between Zardoz, Zandra and Zaki, which wasn't apparent in the original anime. It ultimately ends with Zaki being shot by Zandra after she's disgraced by Zardoz for Takeo and Arisa's betrayal.
- Zardoz is also crueller to Draco. He tries to have him arrested and punished for confirming Steve's heritage, whereas Heinel knew of Jangal's plan and gave him his permission.
- Zardoz figures out that his uncle is planning to sabotage him and also learns of the possibility that Steve, Bert and John are his half-siblings much earlier in the anime.
- Kenichi and Heinel duelled at a tundra. Initially, Heinel had the upper hand when he knocked out Kenichi's sword. However, Kenichi remembered what Daijiro taught him and slid across the ice, knocking down Heinel and grabbing his horns. This drove Heinel in a rage, because Kenichi dared to touch the horns of a Boazanian, and he angrily charged at Kenichi. The two fought again, but after their swords met, they passed out and fell into the sea. Katherine retrieved Heinel's body and fled from the scene. Later, Megumi called Kenichi back to the base to fight the Beast Knight. In comparision, Steve and Zardoz duelled at a playground, and Steve proclaimed that he was going to kill him (while Kenichi told Heinel that he was carrying the will of millions of Earthlings) and stabbed him with the dagger Rozalia gifted him. Zardoz's guards then arrived and shot at Steve until he ran away.
- Zardoz expresses a desire to be the next Boazan Emperor.
Trivia[]
- His name is Zardoz instead of Heinel because the English dub of the 70's anime renamed Heinel to "Zardoz".
- Zardoz's white collar is often mocked by a subset of fans as it looks like a cardboard cutout.
- The change of making Zardoz and Zandra always in love was received negatively by some fans, who felt that Heinel and Katherine's tragic romance was more impactful.
- The scene of Zardoz and Zandra revealed to be sleeping together in Episode 18 incited major controversy and caused memes to circulate online about how Voltes V: Legacy was a hentai/ecchi and how Zardoz and Zandra were horny. Even Christian Vasquez, the actor for Zambojil, weighed in on it by joking that "Zardoz used up his energy for a different battle, that's why he had no energy left for Voltes V.".[5]
- Another meme is how Heinel, who Zardoz is based on, would view Zardoz as a joke.
- Martin del Rosario often likes/retweets fanart of himself as Zardoz on Twitter.
