The Prisoners are inmates of Ryker's Island Prison and the Raft that escaped during the early hours of the Devil's Breath Crisis and cause chaos through New York City. They serve as major antagonists in the final Act of Marvel's Spider-Man, supporting antagonists in its DLC The City That Never Sleeps and minor antagonists in Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

History[]

Past[]

Over the past ten years, New York City had been plagued by massive spikes in crime and terrorist-like rampages perpetrated by maniacs and serial killers as well as gangs of freeloading criminals. One was Ray Dinsmore, who was arrested for double homicide in the fall of 2017 and sentenced to life. When Peter Parker became Spider-Man, he began assisting the police and Captain Yuriko Watanabe in capturing these criminals. Over the years, they caught many, imprisoning them in the Raft to contain them. How many were caught by Spider-Man is unknown but he often commented to several groups about putting them away "years ago" and that he would have to "arrest everybody in Ryker's. Again."

Marvel's Spider-Man[]

In 2018, after building his immensely powerful tentacles with help from Peter Parker, Doctor Otto Octavius takes up a contract to upgrade security at the RAFT and Ryker's Island but secretly uses it to gain a better understanding of the facility's security. After the capture of Mister Negative and Norman Osborn's speech causes Otto to snap, he attacks Ryker's Island first; disabling its security systems and releasing all of the prisoners. Although many are recaptured by Spider-Man in the resulting riot, hundreds more prisoners escape and hundreds more from the RAFT escape when the Sinister Six destroy the prison.

In the following days though, the Devil's Breath is released and New York City is plunged into chaos; being contaminated with tens of thousands dying whilst Silver Sable International closes off all roads out of the city. Trapped on Manhattan Island with the other New Yorkers, the Prisoners unleash chaos; building prisoners camps in four districts whilst driving people from their homes and regularly causing destructive riots and taking entire bus-fulls of people hostage to try and demand an escape from the diseased city. Although initially overwhelmed after returning from being badly injured, Spider-Man is eventually able to stop the Prisoner crimes and shut down their camps. As a direct result, the Prisoners disperse into dozens of different gangs hiding out across the city where they continue to try and kill Spider-Man for the rest of the crisis. Amongst the escapees is Ray Dinsmore who serves a sniper, using a stolen rifle to take potshots at police officers. Dinsmore had destroyed the radio that the police had been using (his old arresting officer being among them). Dinsmore has a vendetta against his old arresting officer and plans on killing him but Spider-Man knocks him out and the murderer is returned to prison.

Eventually, by the time of the defeat of Doctor Octopus and the dismantling of the Sinister Six, all RAFT and Ryker's Island Prisoners are recaptured by the NYPD. Due to the extensive damage to both prisons though, the Prisoners are sent to other facilities like Sing Sing Prison until repairs can be completed.

The City That Never Sleeps[]

Three months later, around the same time that Hammerhead begins his war against the Maggia and New York, Screwball is paroled and restarts her livestreaming career; plotting to make a multi-season series about terrorising New York. As such, she somehow barrels at least a hundred RAFT Prisoners complete in their old outfits and send them to commit various crimes ranging from bomb planting to common assault and to be fodder for Spider-Man's gadgets. Eventually, Screwball and most of her gang are arrested but corrupt guards give her the equipment to stream from her cell and thus she continues her antics with her remaining fans. Sometime after Hammerhead's downfall though, the equipment is confiscated and the remaining Prisoners returned to prison.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales[]

Two years after the Devil's Breath Crisis, the RAFT is repaired so a large convoy of police transports containing dozens of RAFT Prisoners as well as the Rhino being transported in a large overhead container. When the Rhino escapes though, whilst Peter attempts to capture him, Miles Morales fights the prisoners who are freed from their transfer vehicle. However, some prisoners still escape, stealing cars and even heading to the Roxxon laboratory but all are eventually put back behind bars.

Organization[]

The Prisoners are an extremely complicated and uneven group as they are moreso a categorization of dozens of different gangs from two entirely different Prisoners than one conglomerate group. They all weird the same typical outfits depending on which prison they come from; generic orange jumpsuits for the Ryker's Islanders and bright orange jumpsuits with technological highlights and occasional large glowing collars for those from the RAFT.

Initially, the RAFT and Ryker's Island Prisoners stick together according to previous prison gangs and allegiances to establish Prisoner Camps around Manhattan Island to act as bases in hideouts. Said bases are in Chinatown, Hell's Kitchen, the Financial District and Harlem but these are all dismantled by Spider-Man and all the Prisoners arrested. As a direct result, the Prisoners flee into hundreds of directions in small gangs to occupy areas ranging from Parks to near Wall Street and atop roofs never making a meaningful attempt regroup again but proving a continual hinderance to Spider-Man for the rest of the Devil's Breath Crisis
