The Private Militia are major antagonists in the World of Assassination trilogy in the Hitman video game series, serving as the main antagonists of HITMAN, and the secondary antagonistic faction of HITMAN 2.
They are a group of mercenaries composed of outlaws of all kinds gathered by the mysterious Shadow Client in order to eliminate all of Providence.
History[]
The Private Militia is an illegal union of mercenaries, former intelligence operatives, ex-soldiers, freelancers, terrorists, activists, hackers and criminals who were recruited by Lucas Grey, the Shadow Client. They operated from an abandoned apricot farm in rural Colorado and have been involved in international incidences of assault, fraud, manipulation and so on, in order to bring down Providence, an enigmatic power cabal consisting of certain members of the "Global Elite" that secretly run the world and its affairs.
They were responsible for the kidnapping and assassinations of Thomas Cross and Charles Vanderblathe, who were both members of Providence, after Grey manipulated ICA to take down Jordan Cross. The part led by Sean Rose were also planning attacks on Gustavo Torres and Simon Deveraux, who are also part of Providence. In the month following the killing of Thomas Cross, the militia carried out the killing of shipping mogul Rex Larsson in Montreal, as well as the murders of dozens of other Providence CEOs all around the world.
Shortly after the killing of Larsson, Alma Reynard, who led the militia cell in New Zealand, carried out the kidnapping of Dynasty Global VP Lance Donovan's family in Wellington. Reynard then blackmailed Donovan into killing Dynasty's CEO, Rupert Pierce. Meanwhile, Grey himself staged an attack on Ether HQ and kidnapped Neleis de Waal, CEO of Ether. The militia used Waal to expose the existence of Providence to the world and then killed him.
However, Providence hired the ICA through the Constant in order to stop the militia, which would now suffer the loss of several operatives and associates at the hands of Agent 47, such as Sean Rose, Alma Renard, Maya Parvati, Rico Delgado, and Wazir Kale. Providence defectors who cooperated with the militia such as Robert and Sierra Knox were also targeted for elimination.
Eventually, after reuniting with 47 and bringing back his past memories, Grey persuaded 47 and Diana to join him in taking down Providence, whilst sending a message through the dark web and disbanding the Private Militia.
In the bonus mission for HITMAN III, "Shadows in the Water" (which chronologically takes place within the two-month gap between the HITMAN 2 missions "Another Life" and "The Ark Society"), it is revealed that high-ranking member Noel Crest intercepted Grey's order to disband the militia and used this as an opportunity to usurp power, transforming the militia from a political extremist group into a ruthless mercenary company with no regard for collateral damage. The militia sought to gain access to Providence's assets so they can commit grand heists after stealing an ICA computer with access to Providence's network. Agent 47, however, infiltrated a militia base in Ambrose Island, where they had set up an outpost, to eliminate Crest himself, allied pirate Sinhi Venthan, and to eliminate any connections the militia has to an ICA satellite connected to Providence. 47 completed these three tasks successfully, and it can be assumed the militia finally disbanded.
