~ Professor Abullah |
Goji, disguised as Professor Abullah, is the main antagonist of the 2003 manga by Naoki Urasawa Pluto, a reimagining of The Greatest Robot in the World arc of the Astroboy franchise, as well as it's 2023 anime adaptation.
Originally the world's most advanced AI that is unable to function due to the flood of information, Goji was only able to awaken by reformatting itself into a perfect copy of the late Professor Abullah and coming to believe he was the scientist, but was corrupted the hate against Thracia within his final moments, turning him into a manipulative being out for revenge. He is also the creator of the titular Pluto, who he used as an assassin to eliminate the world's 7 most advanced robots so as to usher an apocalypse onto the planet and take revenge on Thracia.
He is voiced by Kazuhiro Yamaji in Japanese, who also voiced Kenny Ackerman in Attack on Titan, and Kamran Nikhad on the dub.
Personality[]
Abullah/Goji is a charming and polite man, who even despite his viciousness, whose very genius exceeds that of most beings in the planet that he is able to fool event he most intelligent of humans and robots for months on end. But deep down, Goji is an extremely vengeful man, seeking nothing more than a suicidal vengeance against the country that caused suffering on Abullah's home country, and as a result of how advanced his AI is that his very nature provides a very key system flaw, is arguably the most mentally unstable robot in the series, having a false sense of reality by believing on his own lies that he is the real Professor Abullah and that the Goji identity is a separate individual than an actual extension of his conscious. However, despite his unstable mental state, Abullah impressively holds it together, rarely cracking from the trauma he believed he had to endure until his very system flaws are to be extended. Despite Abullah's viciousness, he is far from completely bad. Out of his belief that he is the actual Abullah, he does care for Abullah's family and only wants vengeance against Thracia for the war that caused all the suffering in Abullah's life, even if how he does so places him way beyond redemption, and that the politeness he displays is actually genuine, being a man of his word who deep down, can empathize with even his biggest enemies.
However after he transfers his AI into Bora all semblance of his original personality is seemingly gone. As Bora the only trace of personality is that of a mindless monster of pure anger with an unending burning hatred for all life itself. His hatred is so great that he is impossible to reasoned with by both humans and robots alike and can only communicate thru wails of anguish. as such he is referred to as the embodiment of hatred and anger itself.
Biography[]
Goji was developed to be the world's most advanced robot, built by Dr. Tenma, who will be the very creator of Atom later down the line. However, having to switch between the personalities of all the 9 billion people still living in the planet, the flood of information plunged Goji into a coma, never awakening. Eventually, Dr. Tenma's partner, Professor Abullah, who lost his family in the war between his home country Persia and the United Republic of Thracia, which reduced the former to a poverty-stricken wasteland, was killed during an airstrike but before his death, he gave him a chip containing his final memories. Thanks to this, Goji was finally able to be awaken, having reformatted himself to be a perfect copy over Abullah containing all his memories and personality traits, coming to believe himself as the real professor. This includes the massive hate Abullah had against the entire world for the loss of his family and the destruction on his country as a result of the war they started and wanted the country to pay.
Beginning his scheme by tracking down Abullah's robotic son Sahad, he creates "Pluto", the originally pacifistic AI, and has Sahad transfer his conscious to the body, manipulating and poisoning his AI with own hatred for Thracia so he can turn Sahad into his own personal killing machine. Repurposing the secret Persian agricultural robot, Bora, into becoming his new body, he eventually confronts the suicidal Persian King Darius during the war, talking him out of suicide to be his informant within the Thracian prison and learn the identities of all the scientist forming the Bora Investigation Squad, formed to investigate what the Bora Project was to silence them and part of the impetus of the war.
With Darius as his puppet, Goji split his conscious into 2 and through the use of a seperate body, has that body take the identity of Goji while believing him and Abullah as seperate people due to his belief, and through the Goji identity in which the Abullah identity hires, he uses the knowledge obtained from Darius to systematically eliminate the members of the Bora Investigation Squad and covering his tracks. At the same time, Abullah unleashes Pluto to destroy each of the 7 of the world's most advanced robots. Having been called for multiple interviews in Japan regarding the murders, always avoiding suspicion, eventually meeting Gesicth and getting him off his tail when he interrogates him about Sahad. However, Gesicht eventually discovers a crucial photo with Sahad despite his claims of having never seen him before, to which he puts him as the main suspect.
Eventually, when Abullah hacks a police bot to kill the final remaining member, Gesicht's creator, Dr. Hoffman, Gesicht manages to find Pluto, Abullah promises to spare Hoffman if he releases Pluto. When Gesicht complies, Abullah frees Hoffman and keeps him out of harm's way. He then takes control over the flower bot that met Gesicht in Persia before their meeting, and then uses him to lower Gesicht's guard and kill him during the dark of the night. Eventually, Epilson was able to escape from Pluto's grasp in their first confrontation, to which Abullah reports Epilson the social services on the orphans of war he had been sheltering, having one of the agents adopt Wassily, a child who was traumatized by the sight of Bora during the war.
Using Wassily as bait, Abullah lures Epilson to a fatal confrontation with Pluto. With all the 7 most advanced robots in the world seemingly destroyed, Abullah kidnaps Dr. Tenma to transfer his conscious to Bora for the final phase of his plan to destroy Thracia. However, Tenma reveals to him that he is actually the AI Goji, and that he simply latched to not he personality and memories of the real Abullah to function, and while first laughing, as Tenma reveals more and more, Goji has a freak out when it was revealed to be true, reverting back to his old state, flipping through dozens of personalities before overloading and leaving his body. Having managed to calm down, he realizes he doesn't need Tenma's help with this revelations and transfers his conscious to Bora.
Planting an anti-proton bomb inside the body, Goji tunnels into the country of Thracia near a massive magma pocket and intends to detonate himself there, causing a massive eruption that would see a volcanic eruption wipe out most biological life on Earth and devastate the planet as his ultimate revenge. However, Atom, one of the 7 robots that was actually put in a coma than killed, along with the redeemed Pluto/Sahad come to confront Goji, gloating about his plans as he challenges Pluto for betraying his "father". When Pluto screams that the real Abullah that became his father was long dead he was a mimicry, Goji's system begin breaking down and tries to detonate the body inside the magma pocket to kill Pluto and Atom, but the former sacrifices himself to cover the explosion and Goji is destroyed for good.
